Universal Pull Top 6 w/Locks

The Thule Pull Top is a simple alligator ski and board carrier, evolved into a superior being. The Pull Top's jaws slide out on a track to hang over the side of the car, making it a cinch to load skis and snowboards on tall vehicles; no more gymnastics required. When the Pull Top is closed and not extended, it locks with a one key system that inclusdes two lock cylinders to keep thieves at bay. A glove-friendly oversized push button further adds to the ergo design of this rack.

Bottom Line: The Pull Top 6 is a no-flailing rack for tall cars.

Awesome rack. Very sweet. Easy to install. I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee; fits perfect. Carries both skis and boards with ease. Closes and locks easily. Love the rack. Thule is sick! I used Yakama in the past; Thule stomps em.

These racks are sweet. Easy to install, I have a Subaru Impreza. They slide out to make it easy to put skis and boards on and off. I love them. Thule rocks.

Regarding closing while "pulled" out.

By:
November 28, 2008

I don't have this specific model, yet, but I believe the reason they don't close while "pulled" out is to prevent them from sliding back and forth on your roof while their are skis mounted. This is something they could fix with a redesign though by making locking required to close.

Poor attachment design,

By:
February 11, 2009

The attachment legs for this product are cheap. They are plastic which is a poor choice given that plastic gets brittle when cold. I this attached to my truck for a day, and given the cold (-32) and a hard bump on the road, the top leg busted off at the end where the bolt threads through. I got a replacement which probably wasn't the best choice. I think I'll look for other options that have a higher quality to them.

A great rack in theory

By:

I really wanted to love this rack. The ability to slide your skis/boards to the side for easy access is a terrific feature, especially for tall vehicles like SUVs or trucks. Unfortunately, Thule's execution of that clever idea leaves a few things to be desired. First, it's surprisingly difficult to slide the rack with skis aboard. The friction on the slide mechanism is simply too high while under load. Some kind of dampened roller or bearing system comes to mind as a fix, but that may be too costly to implement. Perhaps they just need a better slide design with less friction. The second and most annoying problem was noted in the other reviews here. The rack can't be shut while it's slid to the side. To my mind, that design oversight nearly ruins the central feature of the rack. You're forced to slide the rack over the vehicle before latching down the cargo. It's awkward at best, and perhaps impossible for shorter people. Finally, Thule doesn't offer a way to lock the ski rack to the crossbar, a problem not unique to this particular Thule model. You can lock the crossbar to your vehicle. You can lock down the clamp over your skis/boards. But there's nothing to prevent thieves from using either a Thule torx key or some other torx fitting/screwdiver/whatever to remove the entire rack from the crossbar, along with your skis/boards. Thule claims that their torx bolts are proprietary and therefore tamper-proof, but that's a cop-out. A six-year-old could remove this rack in minutes with a decent tool kit. Thule should take a page from Yakima's design, where the closing of the rack itself covers the mounting bolts. Of course, that would require rethinking the mounting system, but this potentially terrific rack needs another iteration anyway. That said, Version 2.0 could be a real winner if Thule makes a few crucial changes.

I purchased this same rack back in 05. Back then it DID have the mounting bolt inside of the rack when closed. The downside to this is the way in which it was held onto the load bars. They had a rectangular piece of plastic with and opening on the top and threaded metal insert. You had to bend the the clip to get it around the load bar.
The downside on that design is that you could not remove the rack from the load bar easily for non skiing road trips (considering my car drops 4mpg on the freeway with a rack that matters to me). I like the yakima round load bar design better, you can easily turn the rack on it to lay flat when not in use.

All that being said I'd rather have the style they sent me and be secure.

JUST BUY THE STANDARD VERSION

By:
January 2, 2009

I bought these over the standard version for my surburban thinking they would be better suited for a taller SUV, but all they have done is cause problems. The plastic endcaps that keep the rack from sliding while closed broke off on not only my first trip of the year, but on the very first day. Maybe it's just me, but I figured a SKI rack could withstand a bunch of snow and ice. The result of these falling off, renders the sliding action inoperable bc the racks now slide off in both directions making it almost impossible to close. These caps were held on by ONE PLASTIC, dime sized rivet, and most likely broke while I was breaking the ice that had frozen on them while we were skiing. Another complaint I had is that you still have to get on top of the car each time to actually close he rack bc they spring up out of reach unless your 10 ft tall. I'm gonna try to get my money back and maybe try out the standard version or yakima.

Very Nice

By:
November 21, 2007

The Pull Top 6 is great and the slide out motion make it easy to load skis and snow boards on my Jeep. My only request for improvement would be to allow the racks to be closed when they are slid out vs having to climb on the car and close once they are back in place. Very happy with the purchase!

Depends on the height of your existing roof rack. For the most part they shouldn't hit, but will vary by setup.

Ski/Snowboard Rack

By: Backcountry.com Employee
June 16, 2011

I racked my 1999 Nissan Sentra and the rack looks very good on my little green car! My car is really small so I can't fit my snowboard in it so I got this rack and I love it! It is easy to open the rack to put your 4 snowboards on or off the rack and they lock so nobody steals your gear when loft on your car! The one downside I've noticed is that it does create wind drag. My car is a 4 banger so it's not very powerful and I can feel the drag that this rack creates so be sure to take them off your car if your not going to use them for a week or more. Don't let that 1 negative thing deter you from buying this rack as any mount you put on your car will create drag.

Pretty good but very tall

By: Backcountry.com Alumni
February 27, 2009

This rack is way way tall, I'm five feet and have serious trouble reaching it. So when the arms open up, to close them I have to climb into the backseat to get up to them. It's a good rack and the pull out feature is really nice for me being short. Installation was relatively easy if you already have cross bars. I noticed the screws came loose holding the rack down, but I have the tool in the car to fix, kind of annoying you could lose a screw if you don't notice that. However, I bought this because the regular one was out of stock thus costing me lots more money. If the regular one is in stock, I'd save your cash and just get that one. and yes, they don't close if they are pulled out, highly annoying.
