Description

Thule's Snowcat converts your factory rack to a ski rack so you don't have to invest in the entire Thule system.

Carry up to six pairs of skis or four snowboards with the Thule Snowcat. The Snowcat attaches to the factory slide rails on the roof of your vehicle in a snap so you can load up your car in the morning and make to the hill for first tracks. Since the Snowcat attaches directly to your factory roof rack, you do not need to have Thule load bars for this ski rack. Complete with Thule locks you don't have to worry about people stealing your skis while you're trying to enjoy breakfast at Denny's.

This notes that it's made so you don't need a Thule roof rack system on your car to use it... but does it work if you already have an existing Thule system?

Yes it can be used with either a factory rack or a Thule or Yakima system.

first time buying the roof rack and loved it. I was not sure how strong the rack is to hold heavy wind of Sierra Nevada but no worry.
Installed on 05 Nissan Quest and drove from San Diego to Lake Tahoe total of 1200 miles and not even a mm movement. It was quite and strong. you will see some MPG decrease but that's normal for any roof rack. Wish the rack has some other option to attach to OEM rail because my rail was a round and this was designed to fit more rectangular rail. Overall very impressed.

This rack is designed to fit rails that are not flush with the car, meaning there is a space underneth the rail that it can hook under. My BMW X1 is one solid rail, about 1.5" tall with a lip. It did not fit unfortunately. I was really hoping it would since it's a nice rack, very inexpensive and an all-in-one system. Oh well...

Has anyone gone through a car wash with these racks in place? Obviously, the skis are removed, but it would be nice not to have to remove the entire rack each time.

Yup, I have and there is no problem with it, they fit perfectly.

This rack was super easy to install on our Accura MDX factory rails. Carries 4 pairs of fat skis fine, but unsure 6 would be possible. Managed to squeeze three pairs of skis on one side but it was tight - those were 110mm width, 100m width and 80mm width.

I liked that by loading either side, you don't need to lean all the way over the top of our SUV. What I didn't like is that the locks seem a little flimsy - when closing the unit down it seemed a little more flexy than other racks. Longer term I'll see how that holds up.

The Snowcat is only for a vehicle with factory installed side rails. Because the 2000 A6 comes with a bare roof the Snowcat would not be a viable solution for you. You would need to put together a base rack system and then use something like the FlatTop for your snow sport needs.

I purchased the Thule 5401 snowboard roof rack for my son's 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee (with factory installed roof rack). He has tried to install it on his vehicle, but says the roof rack bars are rounded and it seems to only fit a square roof rack. He also said that boards would scrape the roof of his car. Is there something that can be added or some type of adjustment that can be made or do I have to return the rack?

This rack is great. I started off using this on a Land Rover Discovery II and now rock it on my new Grand Cherokee. Fits like a glove on the factory side rails on both and there ia a bit off difference in their widths. Have some occasional stickiness with locks but not a big deal, and been able to stuff it full of skis & boards no problem.

This things is pretty cool. Installed it on my Subaru WRX Wagon directly onto the factory rack. Each side holds 2 pairs of modern mid-fat skis or 2 snowboards, so I am pretty much set for a 4-person trip in the Subaru Wagon and this rack makes it pretty comfortable with all the gear stored above. Have not had any problems so far and have been using it all year. I would've given it 5-stars, but I still have to lift the skis up there myself ;) But seriously....this is the best ski rack I've ever owned!

Just installed The Snowcat on my 2006 Jeep Liberty. It fits perfect and there is lots of room between the bindings and the roof. Also a good secure fit. The directions of all pictures work well.

Great fit. Looks better than most racks as well! Great shape and really doesn't seem to cause "drag" on my car.

A little time consuming to install because the allen screws cannot be turned very far with each motion, and they are under some pressure. However once installed, the rack is very secure and very effective.

One other side note. If your bindings do not fold down far enough, the boards you turn upside down will contact your car :( no adjustment to raise the rack so to speak. (perhaps cut some small pads out of foam?) probably happens with all racks though.

This rack installs in minutes. It is really a matter of 4 bolts that grip your side rails(ones that run length wise). Fits my board no problem, and I don't even hear any wind noise. My boards are 158wide and 162 for pow days. The rack it self just sneaks in those big dogs. Skis are no problem, even the wide pow seth pistols. This rack slides to fit the width of your car also so your not locked in at one size. This is a must have.
