    Easy, no-fuss bike transport.

You don’t need a truck or an empty SUV to transport your mountain bikes to the trailhead when you have the Thule Passage 3 Bike Strap Rack. Six adjustable nylon straps hold the rack in place; vinyl-coated buckles at the end of the straps hold the carrier firmly to your car without scratching your paint. Thule’s patented FitDial gets the fit just right for maximum security.

    • Narrow cradle arms hold a wider range of bike frames, including small child’s bike-frames
    • SoftCushion pads protect trunk and hatch, while padded rubber cradles cushion the bike frame and hold it securely
    • Arms fold down when not in use
    • Thule part number 911XT

Mediocre product (you get what you pay)

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

    Pros:

    - Easy to install and use.

    - Would fit mostly any car (worked with my Mazda 3 HB, 2014)

    - Price

    Cons:

    - Couldn't mount my mountain bike (specialized crave 17")

    - The parts that attach to the trunk DO NOT have rubber/plastic coating and left scratches

Ended up returning it. Will update the post after I get a different rack

Good bike rack, great for the price

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The best part about this rack is that it is thule and surprisingly cheap! I just drove from NJ to CO in a very roundabout route and still have all three bikes I started the journey with. It is super light but shockingly strong. One of the bikes I was transporting is an older specialized BigHit DH and is a very solidly built bike. There are a few negatives though. I found that it rubs on the top of my rear hatch so maybe some padding under the straps will help. Also the placement/spacing of the bikes is very important but can shift slightly on extended road trips. It should also fit fairly universally but check the thule approved applications and if you can test fit it before buying/using.

    It works

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Fits both a 2013 Prius and 2005 Subaru Outback fairly well - the lower straps don't really seem to accomplish anything, but I haven't had any issues with the rack seeming loose.

I can only fit 2 bikes on the rack without removing front tires, but I'm convinced that all racks are that way and generally buy a rack that "fits" one more bike than I actually want to transport.

Bikes with a vertical rear shock fit well on the rack, but anything else is a little tricky. Specialized bikes are just a goddamn nightmare, but in my experience that's not the rack's fault.

Bikes tires tend to stick out from the profile of the car, not enough to worry about taking up two lanes, but it does kill gas mileage. I think the hit is less than a top rack would be, but it's about a 25 - 30% loss on the prius.

    Excellent Purchase

Backcountry answered my questions straight away which lead to my purchasing this product. We tried it out straight away and with a little adjusting, worked brilliantly. Great service and price, excellent product. Very happy customer.

Does anyone have any suggestions on security? I purchased the passive lock with the rack. About to go cross country and then some. Any advice would be helpful. I will also try to give some feedback in a few weeks.

will this fit a 2008 Santa Fe Hyundai

Hello - thanks for the question.

I used the Thule Fit Guide (http://www.thule.com/fitguide/default.aspx?language=en-us&market=us) to check for compatibility here.

This Passage 3 Bike Rack was listed on the compatible options produced by this search. (This was for a Santa Fe, not a Santa Fe Sport model, so you may need to double check depending on which model you own). If you need more info or have additional questions don't hesitate to give our Gearheads a call or use our LIVEchat feature.

Does it fit to 2003 mercedes Benz ML 320?

      Hey christopher yankiling,

I checked with Thule and it doesn't look like the Thule Passage 3 will fit on your 2003 Mercedes Benz ML 320. It would be best to go with a roof option for a bike rack on that particular vehicle. Please visit the following website to look up your vehicle to see which bike racks are compatible:

Will this fit a ford explorer or it it just for a car?

      Hey Angelia Gregory,

Thanks for the question. I did some checking on the Thule Passage 3 Bike Strap Rack w/Cradles and I did see that it will fit on the back of the more modern Ford Explorers. I did the check for the model years between 2005 and 2012 so if you have one that is older, go to www.thule.com and use their fit guide to find out if the Passage 3 fits on any models older than 2005.

Will it fit an Audi Q5. It is more of a hatchback instead of a trunk/sedan style?

Is there another model or brand that would fit better?
