Thule's Goal Post hitch mount gives you a rear load bar on any vehicle with a 2” hitch mount. Because the Goal Post is mounted so far back, it makes an ideal unit for carrying long kayaks and canoes. The Goal Post includes two load stops and an anti-wobble device for load stability. A telescoping vertical means that the goal post can adjust to whatever size you need it.

Bottom Line: Perfect for that monster touring boat.

What A Dream

We are SOOOO happy with our Thule Goal Post and Roof Rack system. It makes loading our canoe for trips to the river a breeze. Several people have stopped us to ask where we got it. Ordering from this site was crazy fast and easy.

I have a 2004 Ford 250 super cab pickup with a canopy (same level as the cab). Want to haul 2-grumman canoes (aluminum, weighing 75 lbs each). Will the goalpost work for 2 canoes (plus the half-packs and bar up front) and what other accessories do I need to buy with this equipment? Thanks, Ken

Ken,

It's unlikely that the Goal Post will work for two canoes. Most canoes are somewhere around 35" wide, so unless you are able to stagger them enough, or get longer crossbars you won't have enough room for two boats.

To get one boat loaded, you'll also want a Thule Canoe Carrier. This will provide a fixed point on the crossbars to strap the canoe to. The Goal Post is rated for 165lbs, so if you are able to fit them both you won't be over the weight limit. You can also increase security and stability with a Thule Snug Tite, but this is optional.

This is a tricky setup that you are attempting, so my advice is to start early, order the parts and try it out, so you have time to adjust/adapt before you hit the road. Remember, Backcountry.com has a great customer service policy. If something doesn't work out, just send it back. You pay only a flat shipping rate (about $7).-

The Goal Post

By:
October 16, 2007

I have a 2003 Ford Ranger. Hauling a canoe around was not an easy task until I found the Goal Post by Thule. What a great invention for pickup trucks. I also bought a load bar for across the cab. Now I can haul my canoe, planks, mattress, or just about anything. Very easy setup. I'm a happy customer.

I have a 2007 Toyota Tacoma extended cab. It has a short bed and no roof rack. Can I use this Goal Post rack WITHOUT a roof rack/support bar, using pads to protect the surface of the vehicle?

Yes you can...but you would need to get a good tie down for the front so it does not sway back and forth while driving as just the rear being secured is not enough.

Thule Goalpost

By:

This was the perfect solution for my situation, already having a Thule roofrack, but having switched from a car to a pickup (w/bedcover that precludes any rack that uses the bed or the stake holes); needed to carry windsurfers and kayaks. Very easy to install and fit. My only gripe is that the stabilizer straps just have a simple pull-through cam lock with no mechanical reduction, so it's hard to get them really taut; I might replace them with something with a mechanical reduction, (like a trucker's hitch)to reduce the load on the welded L-joint (I've heard rumors that the weld can crack over time from taking all the torque from the load if the straps aren't tight enough). Still, a great piece of gear all in all.

Thule Goal Post

By:

Great Product. I use it on the front of my truck to support two kayaks, and I also use it on the back of the truck's 5th wheel to support and dry my SCUBA gear. Instead of using the factory supplied support straps, I bought two of the ratchet type, as they are much more positive and easier to adjust.

As you wouldn't be using this rig at the beam of the canoe(s), rather you would be mounting the canoes closer to bow or stern where they're much narrower. Even with two 36"-wide boats touching at the gunwhales, their centers would be at roughly 36" from one another. Assuming they're overhanging the crossbar by at least a couple of feet, a 58" load bar should be plenty. Thule wouldn't include it if it didn't work for the majority of needs. You would definitely want gunwhale brackets or load stops as well.

As is this will not work to carry two canoes. This comes with a 58" load bar witch will not be wide enough for two canoes as most canoes are 36" wide. By getting a longer load bar you could make this work but you would need to have the Thule Canoe Carrier to see that the boats are secure.
