The Thule Canoe Carrier is a set of 4 bookend style padded cradles that give your canoe's gunwales a soft place to sit. The included set of ratcheting tie downs makes mounting your canoe up quick and painless. The bookend style system gives superb lateral stability to your boat, though for long trips bow and stern lines like the Quick Draw [THU0029] are necessary. If you're loading a canoe by yourself, the Outrigger [THU0020] makes life much more pleasant.

Love the straps, forget the cradles

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

The Thule straps with the rubber piece that slides over the damage-provoking metal clasps are awesome. These are on my "do-not-lend-to-anyone" list. The cradles don't fit my load bar / canoe size combination. I've tried every conceivable combination of putting them inside and outside of the posts, turning the canoe around (it's a-symmetrical), pushing the canoe further forward or back. Eh. But because the Thule straps wrap perfectly around the Thule load bars, I haven't found the cradles to be necessary anyway. The ropes with the metal s-hooks are a nice feature - they're not nearly as strong as the straps of course, but they're a good for just-in-case security on the front and rear of the boat, especially on a windy day.

Canoes Look Funny on a Civic

This is one heck of a simple rack. It works great on my freight hauler of a Grumman, and also works on my sleek little Wenonah. They're adjustable in seconds, to fit the gunwales of the boat you want to load. I've also used them for carryin logs from my woodlot home. If you want to get some strange looks while driving down the road just use the included straps to load up a couple of trees to your rack! I digress.. If you want a simple way to secure your boats to your rack, this is the ticket. The ratcheting straps aren't actually ratcheting though, they just cinch down tight, and require you to press the release trigger to let slack back through the "ratchet" I would also recommend getting the bow/stern tie downs, as a little extra security is never a bad thing.

    great straps

I bought these to secure a canoe to my Thule roof rack. It has worked great as there are four supports that latches on the the racks that prevents the canoes from moving. The straps are also multipurpose, so when not using the canoe you can use it for other things to secure onto the roof rack.

      Makes canoe trips easier

The shoes not only keep the canoe from shifting, but keep a great reference point for balancing the canoe back on top. The straps that come with the kit are awesome - quick tie down ratchets that work with a single touch. A lot of thought and experience went into the design of this system. If I ever find myself having to tie a boat down the old fashioned way, I'll be sorely disappointed.
If you have a canoe, this is money well spent.

Will the Thule Canoe Carrier fit the roof...

Will the Thule Canoe Carrier fit the roof racks on my Honda Pilot? I am still not sure how this carrier works.

Ok so Ricky if you have a 03-05 model that doesn't have factory rails you are outta luck. However, if that is not your situation then set yourself up with our rack configurator and go from there.
This works by having 4 pieces 2 up front, 2 in back that have ratcheting straps to secure it. Hopefully that shines some light on it for you.

        Good Luck!

Write your question here...Need a one person carrier to load 58 lb canoe onto SUV. Can one person load this?

This rack isn't going to make loading any easier to load. It's designed to hold the canoe in place once it's on top of the SUV. The ability for one person to load a canoe on top of a SUV depends on the weight of the boat, strength of the person and vehicle height. If you are able to place the boat on top of the SUV, then one person will be able to operate the straps to tie it down.

As the description states, consider the Thule Outrigger, for additional help loading a boat.
