The Therm-a-Rest BaseCamp sleeping pad packs maximum comfort and warmth into a super affordable car-camping mattress. When you never carry your mattress more than the distance from your car to the tent, there's no reason to worry about weight—and every reason to make your base camp or car camping trip as comfortable as possible. With a full two-inch thick layer of solid-foam core, the BaseCamp provides superior warmth and comfort.
Bottom Line: Car camping luxury at a killer price.
This product is great, I'm a bigger guy and this is a great pad for car camping/campground use. It is very insulating and I use it in tents and in my hammock. Overall great product, just a little to big to hike with, but I didn't buy it for that reason, I bought it for campground use and it does that job well.
When car camping throughout the year, this is a great sleeping pad. It even works great in a tent on the snow due to the high R value. If weight is not an issue & you want to sleep very comfortably, this pad is for you.
Noise has never been an issue with any Therm-a-Rest pad. The main thing you'll notice is how comfortable they are considering you're sleeping on the ground.

X-Large suited me well. I'm 6-4, 240 lbs. I thought it very impressive that something with little depth would insulate me so well from the cold ground. Further, I'm a side sleeper so the hard ground has always made for a difficult nights sleep. But I had no issues on the cold nights, sleeping well on my side without any realization that the cold hard ground was less than a couple of inches away.
I'd recommend the DreamTime sleeping pad. It's another inch thicker which would be more beneficial for his back issues.
I've never had a Therm-a-Rest leak air in many years of usage & my older ones work even better now since I've replaced the metal valves with plastic ones.
Based on Cascade Designs excellent durability, you will not see air leaking out of this pad over the life of the pad! One of the things Cascade Designs does with every single pad before it leaves the factory is fill it up with air near it's bursting threshold using an air compressor and leaves it for 48 hours on a padded shelf. Over the course of these two days, it is monitored by several people using calipers to make sure it's thickness remains the same. If it passes this last QC test, it is then packed and made ready to ship. No other company takes this drastic step to make sure each pad holds air before leaving the factory. You won't have any problems with air leaking out, unless you're careless with it. Make sure that nothing pointy and/or sharp is underneath it before laying it down. lf you do this, it will last for decades.
Got this for the girlfriend for our first camping trip together. Worked great. She slept like a log every night. The little amount of extra weight is totally worth it. Plus its amazing how well it self inflates. My therm is only 2 years old and I have to blow it up a fair amount, this one you let it sit for 15 minutes and in two puffs its perfect. One last thing the extra thickness lets you run it at a low psi and not feel any rocks. Get it!
I got this for my wife last year and she loves it. I also used it once for a winter trip and felt the difference on the frozen ground. I always had the Therm-a-Rest ridge rest because of the light weight. But I used this pad on my last hike this summer, and I must admit for just a little extra weight you get a better nights sleep. I think it's time for my old bones to use a blow-up pad. Also, I really love the way it self inflates, very cool.
What can you say? It's huge, plush and comfy. I've used it temps down to about 25 degrees in Yosemite, and it's brought me nice Zzzzzs under the stars in Joshua Tree. Great pad. I think it's best when kinda under-inflated. Recommended for those finicky sleepers and girlfriends.
Lose a good night of sleep that is. This mattress is SWEET! It is very comfy and does a great job keeping you warm. You can't go wrong with it. I would not recommend putting it in/on a pack (it is not the lightest). It travels great from your car to your tent though!!
It self-inflates, so all you have to do is give a few extra puffs and you're good to go. Really warm and thick, so no worries about cold ground. Awesome car camping/base camp pad!
Good, and definitely big enough, but I also have a "Camp Rest" and found my Camp Rest to be more comfortable when I did a side by side analysis this weekend. My husband also noticed a difference, which is weird because the thicknesses are pretty much the same.
I love my Therm-a-rest sleeping pads! They are really comfortable, keep you warm, and are not too heavy. I use mine for everything from car camping to short backpacking trips. (They are too heavy for longer backpacking trips.) I just set mine on my sleeping bag and let it inflate while I get everything else set up.
I got the large and I love it, except when I'm backpacking. My fault, I should gotten a smaller one.
Anyways, the pad is great. It's more comfy than a lot of mattresses I've slept on.
My dad needed to use it and he's DEFINITELY one to complain if he had anything less than a good night's sleep. But the next morning he was just as happy as ever.
Great pad, but if you're going to use it for backpacking get the smaller one.
I used this on my winter snow camping, and also I use it home. Very versatile uses and I love it's ability to protect my body from winter chilling ground. So I recommended it to my internet camping community colleagues. Use it and feel it. Very comfort and warm, even hot.
The base camp is a comfortable pad that works for the car camper to the occasional backpacker. I highly recommend the ThermaRest line in general for comfort and value.
I never used a self-inflating mattress before but boy was I glad I had it two weekends ago. It was 40 degrees and I definitely think this mattress helped keep me warm and comfortable. The self-inflating part is very cool, it just takes a little work to get it deflated again and into the stuff sack. Absolutely worth the effort, though!
I'm strictly a car camper, so the size of this Thermarest was not an issue for me. I took it to the Coachella festival and I have to say it was better than some of the hotel beds that I slept in on my trip. The self-inflation thing is mysterious and magical, although it takes some time to happen.
We camp at developed campgrounds and in the backcountry woods of New England. We bring our Therm-a-Rest Base Camp Pads to both places, as they are fairly light and compact, but most importantly, comfortable. Sure there are lighter and more compact pads, but we are not hiking the AT, so an extra pound doesn't really matter - and is definitely worth the extra comfort.
I used the sleeping mats in a recent trip to the Bighorn Mountains - we got rain and lots of it, along with snow, sleet and hail. The mats worked above and beyond my expectations, and were the most comfortable of any mats ever tried and they dried out very quickly when they got wet - and they did. I would recommend them to anybody without question or hesitation!
I love this pad, I bought the XL, because I'm a larger guy, and it works perfectly with my marmot trestles X-Wide bag. Easily the most comfortable pad I've ever used, probably not for backpacking, but I would consider it because I was so comfortable. I slept on rock, and had no shoulder or hip discomfort when I woke up. Easily more comfortable than probably three out of the last four real mattresses I've had.
This is the first self-inflating sleeping pad that I have bought, and I love it. I was surprised how comfotable it is to sleep on. These are great sleeping pads for car camping, which I do more than not. They do not come with a bag or strap or anything, but I just use some webbing sinch-straps and that works fine for me.
