Mountain-man armor.

Reach higher up the mountain shoulder when you cover your own with The North Face Zephyrus Insulated Pullover. As you huff and puff up a skin track or a windswept ridge, the Zephyrus will give you the 40g PrimaLoft insulation that’s just the right weight for the most active days in the mountains. The nylon ripstop shell’s polyurethane coating will bead off melted snow and block the brisk breeze that freezes the rest of your party. The Zephyrus also packs well and can be used as a dependable mid-layer for the coldest summit attempts.

top of mt fuji (3717m), -1c, but brilliant blue sky, tho wind was howling on the ridge, the pullover did brilliantly. The wind proofing was tested and for the most part did a great job...packs down in the chest pocket to about 5 by 4 inches and compresses well...to stow in backpack...another pocket or two wouldn't go astray tho...(hence only 4 stars).

Does What You Expect

Very warm, very packable. Not totally waterproof but if it's raining you want your rainjacket on anyway. My only criticism is that there are no pockets (apart from the pocket that you use to stuff the pullover into when you pack it up). Would it have killed you, North Face, to include a pocket or two?

Didn't fit me right

I really liked the weight of this jacket but it was too tight at the shoulders and in the armpits and bunched in that area. Usually TNF XL fits me well but not in this pullover. Too bad. Had to return. Got the Drummer Blue but it was lighter in color than I expected.

Does this jacket have an adjustable waist band? Is there any sort of cinch?

Responded on

The waist is elastic - no hem drawcord.

Is it a pretty snug fit? Is there a lot of room to in the waist?

Not too hot - not too cold.

This jacket is sweet. You can leave it on most of the time as it regulates the temperature really well. It is so compact and versatile that I bring in on all extended trips. Super lightweight with a clean fit and comfortable feel. A worthy piece.

Can this be worn as a stand alone jacket in 20-30 degree(F) weather? If not, will a nice hoodie underneath be sufficient?

You might get chilly standing around idle, but with moderate activity, you'd be fine.

Hi! I'm going to Iceland next month doing mostly camping. I would like an isolation piece for the trip. Is the Zephyrus going to be enough for the temperature? Compared with the Patagonia Nano Puff pullover?
And for the sizing, i'm 5.9, about 150lbs. I won't use it with other layering piece. Medium won't be to "puffy"?

What temperatures are you looking at? Primaloft is a great synthetic insulation material which--fun fact--will work even when wet. However as a mid-layer this is not going to be a stand-alone jacket. You will need to layer if the weather gets chilly (think at or below freezing) for an extended period or if things get really wet. This will do well on its own in cool weather (at or above freezing) and under a shell in nasty weather, or if you're getting hot and sweaty in cold weather... The Nano Puff pullover is going to perform very similarly as far as warmth with the main difference being in the shell material and how the insulation is distributed throughout the jacket (I'm not sure if the insulation is sewn into individual compartments on the zephyrus, as with the Nano). Fewer seams means lower likelihood of snagging on brush, etc.

Long story short: this a great light-weight insulating midlayer and will be a powerful tool in your outdoor apparel arsenal. Layer up! A medium should fit great. I'm 5'8", 165 and broad shouldered and will fit into a medium, but I prefer a large.

Happy trails!

Thanks Hunter!
For the temperature, we're talking around 8 to 13 celsius degree in general. But I think the worst it can go is around freezing at night and worst days. I will wear the jacket with a Paclite shell or a softshell or alone depending of the temperature. As it is often wet in Iceland, i prefer the synthetic insulation over the down!

Best Answer Responded on

The Redpoint Jkt. is going to be warmer since it has 100 grams of PrimaLoft versus the 40 grams in the Zephyrus pullover.

Hope this helps!!

TNF Zephyrus Pullover

Great simple piece by the north face. Its main purpose is to be as light as possible, so it lacks some of the technical features other insulated jackets would have. Only one chest pocket (doubles as stuff sac), and no hem cinch or wrist closures. Instead, the hem and wrists are elastic bound to create a seal from the elements (also, back is longer than front). Superlight synthetic insulation is just enough to pair with a base layer and shell to create an ultralight system. Nylon outer fabric is light (and breathable) but substantial enough to take some scrapes. The weight and packability is what sets this jacket apart. Packs down to the size of a baseball (if you really smoosh it) and weighs nothing. So for ten ounces you can pack an insulated jacket for the just in cases. I bring this jacket with me even in summer for when temps drop down a bit at night in the hills. I find myself pulling it out more than i thought i would. One small gripe. The length could be a tad longer. Because the hem is elastic bound, when you raise your arms up, the jacket tends to ride up a little. This is just my personal experience with the jacket, and may not be the case with others. I'm 5'10'' 190 and the large fits perfect. Great piece for many uses.

Best North Face Product in Years

The Zephyrus Pullover is outstanding. Super lightweight, ultra packable, 40 grams of primaloft, with an alpine fit. I am 5'10 and approx 140 lbs and the medium size is perfect. What more could you ask for to layer underneath your shell. A great piece to add to your pack or closet for a variety of different uses. You will not be disappointed!

I love this jacket too, packs down to baseball size but provides plenty of warmth.

Very Nice!

Very nice insulated nylon sweat shirt type of item. Typical excellent TNF quality. The fit is perfect for someone who is XL & 6 foot 200 pounds, not too loose or tight and good warmth capability.
Very pleased with this piece & Backcountry.
