Who needs a shell?

Skip the shell and get protection from the wind in a soft fleece jacket with The North Face Men's WindWall 1 Fleece Jacket. Windproof-rated at 14CFM, this jacket's 100-weight WindWall fabric provides excellent protection from the wind, yet it breathes when you’re working up a sweat running, skiing, biking, or simply working in the yard on a windy day. The North Face has improved the Windwall 1 by bonding a layer of fleece to the inside of the jacket for extra-cozy warmth over a T-shirt or thermal layer. Cinch the hem drawcord to completely seal out the wind, and get outdoors.

That's right between a Medium and a Large. I'm 6' and 185, and I would wear a medium (I don't like a loose fit). This jacket has a standard fit, so the medium would fit fine in the body, but I would be concerned about the length of the arms, and the overall length of the jacket. I still believe the medium would work fine. Besides, there is always the opportunity to return, using Backcountry's nice return policy.

Nice everyday jacket

Most of the reviews here say the same things I enjoy about this jacket. It is a good jacket for working outside in the fall, mild winter days or spring. It blocks wind excellent & is good for working outside on small project or short hikes when the weather is cold, but not frigid.

I like this jacket because I don't have to use my other technical skiing jackets for other errands around town. Basically, it is a good everyday jacket.

Durning the fall and winter I pretty much live in this jacket. It looks good enough to be worn each day to work, and performs awesome as well. I used this as a mid layer at copper mountain over news years. The wind chill the first day at -28...I stayed plenty warm. I would highly suggest this jacket.

does anyone out there know if the windwall is compatible with tnf shells as a zip-in liner?

I have seen this question before, but have never found an answer: TNF Black or Black (discontinued) what is the difference? Besides the price. It appears from the pictures that black is just a generic black and TNF Black is a more washed out, softer black - anyone know for sure?

The new colors have been named TNF, but it depends on the product line as to whether that means the color has changed for that year or just had a TNF added to the name. I'm speaking generically as I don't know for sure if this particular jacket has any variance from black to TNF black.

Very basic jacket

My shell jacket has been great for shedding the rain, but when it comes to a cold, windy day, I'm out of luck with just the shell. I needed something other than a cotton hoody or a wool sweatshirt to keep me warm.

After doing some research, I found the Windwall 1 on sale at the local Hudson Trail Outfitters. There were several other more expensive options for a wind fleece, but I stuck with the most affordable one. After going on a hike over the weekend, I had a chance to see how effective the jacket was against the wind. Needless to say, this did the job at blocking the wind. It kept me warm and comfortable.

The only thing this jacket lacks is a pocket on the inside of the jacket. Overall, the value and comfort this jacket provides is well worth 3-4 stars.

Nice, basic, windproof jacket

This jacket fits the bill when it comes to a spring and fall casual jacket. Being windproof helps a lot with keeping warm. It's a basic jacket, but the color (blue) is great and I like the simplicity. Could probably even be worn in colder temps with a sweater and a fleece vest underneath.

Great multi season jacket

I have owned and used this jacket for 4 years now and have used it in all seasons (thermal layer in the winter). I use a winter coat rarely and do have to fall back to it if the temp gets too deep below 0 F.
I have to say I am not as happy as I have been in the past with TNF jackets the zipper is starting to go. If I sit down while the jacket is zipped, the bottom of the zipper will pop open. I still gave it four stars because for 90% of the time I can unzip the coat to sit down (because i am in side) and it has not impeded my use of the coat too much. The wind projection is awesome. I live in the prairie in MT and the regular 10-20 mph wind we get with cold (ave 40s to -20s with wind chill) fall and winter weather can't touch me. Picture is me about to showel otu my car

good jacket, not perfect.

great jacket, keeps me warm, blocks out the wind well, i usually wear it under a shell though, but works great when i have to run to the store when it's below freezing. only problem i have is that i order a black one, but it's dark grey... very far from black, disappointed because i wanted a black one, but color does not hinder it's functionality. it was bit uncomfortable at first, it sits weirdly on me, it feels stiff around shoulders and arm pits, but i got used to it. pockets are rubbish... they're more functional as vents, which is what i used them for when i snowboarded in it, keeps out the moisture but not for long.

Built to Last

I bought this jacket as a freshman in college 4 years ago. I still wear it to this day, and I still trust in it to do its job. The % of wind that is broken down is amazing and when paired with one of my TNF pull overs this is a deadly combination in the fall, spring, and mild winter seasons

Very nice fit, color looks great and love the style.

I bought this jacket for my boyfriend for his birthday and he loved it. The fit was great and it looked very nice on him. It is sporty enough he can wear for work outside but also looks good when he is a little more dressed up. We liked the color and the style. The material is very nice and he states that it keeps the wind off and keeps the chill out on those cool January and February days. No complaints on this jacket....I will probably be ordering one for myself soon! This is my fifth North Face jacket, I purchased four others as Christmas gifts.

What Wind?

Love it! Keeps out wind, light rain and snow with ease. Not exactly the warmest fleece, the inside is the Windwall membrane, so no thermal material next to skin, but a simple thermal layer will do the trick. The sleeve and torso cut is a bit short, an extra inch of material would've been nice. But I still like it.

We bought this as a Christmas gift and the recipient just loved it. Light weight warmth, well worth the cost.
