Bought For Alaska
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
- Fit: True to size
Initially I bought the Medium and also the Large. The rep I spoke to suggested to play it safe and get both and to return the unwanted one hassle free which I did. It's hard to tell from other reviews here which would have been the right choice L or M. I'm a male about 6'1" and 178 lbs 33 waist and no gut- the Mediums were indeed the right choice for these reasons: when worn over standard blue jeans they were a better and cleaner fit. I could easily bend without restriction, nothing felt tight so it was an easy choice. The large version did not hold well around the waist. Once I added a Samsung Note II to the pocket I felt it drop a bit. There are no belt loops on these as well. In addition there was way too much baggage in the rear. Hence the Large went back. I was able to easily put these pants in my camera back pack in the event of a down pour. There were no real opportunities to test these in the rain so I am unable to comment on this portion to an extent. One thing is for sure, had I had jeans without these protective covers I would have been soaked - I think we'd all agree that is a given. Since I bought the matching jacket and did wear this in the light rain, I can tell you they without question they kept me warm (big difference before and after)and shielded my clothing from the light rain. it would seem true then that the pants would offer the same exact protection.
That being said I would recommend this product with certainty.
Zippers should be waterproof
The pants do a nice job of keeping out the water as long as the water doesn't go near the zippers. If you sit at all during a rain storm with these pants the water will go right through the zippers. One because the flaps for the zippers face the wrong way so the water will pool up and soak through the zippers and two because the zippers used are just normal zippers with no waterproofing to them. I am 5'8" and 165 lbs and got a medium, its a baggy fit but I think a small would be a little tight for rain gear.
The fit is great. They live up to the hype. Back Country really helped me out when matching pant to jacket.
Bought for hiking trip
- Gender: Male
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
I bought this for a planned hiking trip in New Zealand (Milford Trek) which spans 33 miles over 5 days. I used this during a downpour while watching the Cincinnati WEBN fireworks over Labor Day weekend 2012. I had the pants and also the North Face Venture jacket ? I was completely comfortable and dry. I am looking forward to combining these with my Outdoor Research Crocodile Gaiters & NEOS Trekker OverShoes to keep me from getting soaked through the river and rain of New Zealand! Because of the side zip, I can put these on over my TNF Paramount Convertible Pants without making a mess (I'm a clean freak) and so far I have not experienced any issues with the zipper and water seeping through.
Nice pants but not my style
- Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
I looked at these (didn't try them on) and the zippers are nice to have but they have a flap that goes over the zippers (I don't like that).
what is the inseam length?
what is the inseam length?
The inseam length on The North Face Venture Side Zip Pant is 31". Hope this helps.
The North Face Venture Side Zip Pant
Nice two way side Zippers run entire length and start at the top. There is no waist cord or adjustment. Waist is elastic. Pockets are simple, and do not have pass through to pants pockets beneath. (this should be a requirement for rain pants. duh)
Watch the inseam length carefully. These measured out actually 1/2 inch short. For me just the perfect length to dump the water inside my boot when I take a step. Should be longer for a rain pant. Fit seems to be a bit slim. Nothing fancy here for this kind of $$.
Great pants. Well worth the money.
I got these for only a few days, but have been hiking with them this February in New England. Very windy, and they do their job and block the wind extremely well. I can't say much about them being water proof, I just don't know yet, but they do keep snow and slush out 100%. Zip nicely, and good pockets. very lightweight, fits into a bag and stuffs easily. I wish the waist had a pull cord to tighten. It only has Velcro on the sides to tighten the waist.
