Because hiking boots and botany books go hand in hand.

What better way to study for a botany final then to get out and identify some native plants? The North Face Women's Vault Backpack has plenty of storage space for your schoolwork and hiking gear. The main compartment is large enough to fit a few of your textbooks, and there's a secondary compartment for your trail mix and sunscreen. The Vault also features a floating laptop sleeve, so you can bring it along it when you're headed to class and ditch it when you hit the trail. The women-specific FlexVent shoulder straps stretch with your every move, and the foam back panel provides all the cushion you need when you're hiking for those rare plants.

    Have questions about this product?

Stiff back and awkward forward tilt.

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I originally purchased this for my daughter going into 4th grade. She's an average height, slender build for a 9 year old. The anatomical curve in the back padding made it too long, rigid and stiff for a 48" tall pre-teen. My daughter did not like the feel of the mesh overlay on the back and inside of the straps as well. So that was out for her.

Well, I am in graduate school, so the medium size frame and volume as well as the great color and well padded laptop pocket made it appealing for me to try before returning it.

I am only 5'1" tall, but the back padding was somewhat comfortable for me. Now that I have used it for a week: here are a few observations:

    1. laptop area is deep, well padded and secure for my 13" macbook
    2. Front pocket is deep, which is good for a planner or small book, but I wish there was a second pocket attached in there somewhere for smalls or sunglasses.
    3. Mesh pockets are deep and wide enough for our 24 and 32 oz. water bottles. I like the tabs all over - are proving handy.
    4. The zipper pulls are a perfect size - generous enough.

    Dislike:
    * Major frustration in design for me personally!
The bottom front pocket was designed and sewn on so that the entire back falls forward when full with books. Nothing seems to get damaged so far, but it so frustrating as I use the front pocket for pens, keys, glasses etc. things that are irritating to access when the pack falls forward and I have to lift it up every time. I've never had this problem w/ a daypack/backpack before.
I'll try to upload a pic later if I can edit.
