will the "The North Face Pumori Fleece Jacket" zip in this shell?
Hey there, this jacket is zip in compatible and yes the Pumori should zip in fine...

Does this jacket make noise when you move around because it is water proof like a crackle wrinkle sound?
Fashionable, warm and keeps you dry. I use it on top of my Denali fleece. I bought a larger size than the fleece so you cannot zip it in but I like the larger size fit. (If you buy the same size, you can zip it in).

I have a north face thunder down jacket. Does it zip into the varius guide? If not, is there a compatible shell you can recommend? THANKS!
The Denali fleece jacket zips in/out of the Varius Guide shell.

Does this jacket have the jacket on the inside that you zip out?
The Varius Guide Jkt does not come with an inner, zip-out jacket. However, there are numerous fleece, down and synthetic jackets from The North Face that will zip into the Varius Guide for colder weather activities. If you want the inner/outer jacket combo, look at The North Face Triclimate (3 in 1) offerings, with the waterproof shell and insulating liner in one package.
Be sure and buy the Varius in a size that does not result in a snug fit. If you have the room, and want substantial warmth, zip-in TNF Denali. If you need less, most of the lighter fleece also works. I have zipped the Red Point in, which is much lighter in thickness and weight than the Denali, but provides almost as much warmth. If it's really cold, I can start with a soft flannel shirt, then medium fleece, and then put on the Varius with the Red Point zipped in. Now this combination does provide a snug fit. You might need a full size larger than you would normally get to do this, but the combination is still thiner than must puffy 650 down jackets.
I like the Varius shell much better than either of the shells on the triclimates we own: a Boundary Jacket and a Men's Atlas. However, it could be that one of the triclimate models has a shell as good as, or even the same as, the Various. It would be interesting to hear a response to that question.

Someone suggested that if you're doing more than hanging around town and doing light skiing that you may want something beefier than this coat. Any suggestions for something "beefier"? I need to replace my 4 season zip in compatible goretex parka. At 10 years old it's finally wearing out.
For a beefier shell, I would recommend the Lockoff--it's the top of the line Gore-Tex shell, if you are looking for a heavy-duty outer shell. Waterproof, helmet-compatible hood, and good venting make it great for being active in any weather. If it is an insulated jacket you want, the Snow Cougar is really warm and insulated, plus it is waterproof as well!

Solid Ski Shell
I use this jacket for skiing, and it's great. It's not heavily lined, fyi, so it's better for people who layer up underneath. The powder skirt causes a little bit of bunching, but it didn't get in my way (and didn't make me look big, I don't think). Lots of pockets--two zippered chest pockets: one on the outside and one on the inside, and of course two hand pockets on the sides. It breathes well and keeps you dry. Re sizing, I think it runs true to size--I am 5' 11', weigh 135, with relatively of broad shoulders--I got a Large, and it fits well with a wind-stopper jacket underneath. (Without the extra layer, a Medium would would have been the way to go.) It's also long enough in the arms for me.
All-in-all a great ski jacket (as long as you layer up).

I am usually annoyed by The North Face wind skirts, as they can make the coats difficult to zip up. I rarely, if ever, need the skirt. Patagonia makes a coat that allows the owner to remove, by zipper, the wind skirt. should i assume that this one does not zip out?
You are right. The powder skirt is sewn on to this. No way out.
I love my old Varius Guide jacket. It's the mainstay of my outdoor gear. So this year, I decided to splurge on another color I like better. Bad move. Downsizing is the word for today. It's now a "slim fit" jacket, and is SMALLER than the Denali jacket that you'd layer underneath. This makes no sense. You'd have to order a size larger to layer it over anything, and don't get me started on the redesigned Denali...
Also, the main zipper is no longer the heavy, toothed zipper from before - it's now a thinner, nylon coil zipper, not as sturdy. They didn't change the inner zipper, though, so you can still zip in your old liners - if they'll fit inside.
It will still work as a shell, if you order a larger size, but then it might not fit you right in other ways, so I'd say find a different shell that's designed to actually be layered over liners. This one doesn't work for layering.
I bought this shell for skiing, and it works well. I have full range-of-motion. The jacket keeps me dry from the snow without making me overheat. I can change my under layers depending on the weather. All the places where snow and wind can get in are easily sealed-up from the elements. The hood fits nicely over my helmet for windy lift rides. I do wish it had some larger pockets for storing a small water bottle or my neck gator when I get warm, but it looks great and fits me well. The first one I ordered had a kinked zipper. Customer service support was great; they sent out another right away for exchange and I got it the next day (I live in the same state). Can't ask for more!

I already have a zip in compatiable liner. I just need to know if I need to get this jacket in the same size or a size bigger?
Get a size bigger. I bought one of these and discovered it was smaller than the Denali jacket of the same size that I normally zip inside. Had to return it. It's been sized down from a couple of years ago, for some reason known only to the beancounters at The North Face.
I got the same size(xsmall Denali for xs varius) and the fit was perfect. I wouldn't change the size, but...
***IMPORTANT NOTE*** NOT ALL zip in compatible liners with TNF are actually compatible!!! I bought my Denali brand new one month before I bought my Varius, and the zippers would not match up! I got the Denali from a reputable store, but it might have been from the previous season and when I called TNF customer support, told me that they do change the zippers sometimes from year to year, and that if you don't buy the 2 styles from the same year, the "zip-in compatible" jackets may not be compatible. You might want to check the zipper first before buying
That being said, when I finally did get a zip-in compatible pair of jackets, I never even zipped them in! It was more of a pain to do so, so I just layered as I would have anyways without. Hope this helps!

i'm going to spend most of the winter in Utah, near park city, and i was wandering if this jacket would be a good choice for me. I live in Texas, but we spend a lot of time in Utah. I need something I can wear the few times i will go skiing, and just hanging around in Park City. Do you think this will work for me?
I have a fleece tnf insert to go inside....if that helps.
Sounds like this would be a good fit for you. If you're doing a lot of outdoor activities (i.e. hiking, climbing, skiing, snowshoeing, camping) then I'd say go for something beefier. However it sounds like you'll be doing some recreational skiing and dodging rain clouds, so this should work just find for you.
Coupled with your fleece jacket this will provide a very versitile and functional layering system for the conditions you'll likely encounter.
