Living near Seattle I needed a good rain jacket. I shopped around a lot and the Varius fit all my requirements. I like the big hood that I can pull out over my face when it's windy and rainy, like today or fold it back a little if it's not needed. I get a lot of complements on its two tone color and fit. The only thing that I don't really love about this jacket is the Velcro wrist adjustments. They stick to other fabric if they are not completely covered. But it is nice to be able to adjust the cuff size. I didn't want something heavy as it is not really needed everyday here like today it is windy, raining hard off and on but the temp is 51. I wanted the option of a zip in if needed. The Varius is not available at the usual retail outlets. I had to shop around to find it locally. I would recommend this jacket as a good choice for all around wind and rain protection
Will the Nuptse down jacket zip into this shell? And do they need to be the same size? I've got a Large Nuptse but have read that the Varius runs a little small, and I'd like an XL Varius if'll work with my Nuptse.
North Face recommends the jackets be the same size as the liners. If they're different sizes, the liner may zip in, but the zippers will be different lengths and everything may not line up properly.
Well I only gave it 4 stars because it runs a little small. I bought it for my wife for christmas as an outer shell to a large WOMEN'S DENALI THERMAL JACKET (that fit perfect)The Large varius was too small(even without the Denali liner). The denali zips in perfectly, but varius guide runs smaller than the denali. The varius guide really feels like nice materal & seems well made, and really looks nicer in person than it does on the computer(the colors are much better). I'm really bummed that it didn't fit, but I exchanged it, & can't wait to see how the XL fits. The return through back country was absolutely painless (thank you back country). I'm really looking forward to giving the XL 5 stars (we'll see)

I am not sure how to choose a zip in liner for my Varius guide jacket. I don't need anything heavy but sometimes need a light added layer on really cold days. Are all the vests zip in compatible?
All the vests that my wife owns zip in. (Nuptse, and Thunder) The trick is to make sure the zipper mates completely as far as it goes. There are two zippers on the shell, the one that attaches to your vest is inside and bigger than the main shell zipper. What helps is, wear the vest with the front open and attach it. Hope that helps.
Bought this as my wife needs a new waterproof shell. There are so many different types out there, but this one was a nice design. Also learning that it's also zip-in compatible was a huge plus. All the jackets and vests (north face) zips in! I posted earlier that it didn't. I tried again, and it zips in perfectly. So for those who are looking for a good shell, try the Varius Guide.
