Obtaining winter warmth without sporting that Everest-expedition style can be difficult. The North Face Women's Upper West Side Down Jacket, however, delivers toasty 700-fill goose down without making it look like you're about to tackle a techy ice climb.
A sleek women-specific fit and flattering quilt lines mean you get warmth without bulk
DWR coating sheds light flurries
Insulated hood boosts warmth when you don't have a beanie with you
Long length covers your bum and thighs while you walk the city streets
Other reviewers were spot on - this jacket runs small. I am 5'6", ~145#, size 8-10 and usually wear a Medium. I ordered two other down jackets in Medium, both fit perfectly. At the same time, I ordered this jacket in Large. It fit perfectly. The length landed just above my knees. The hood had this strange elastic band around the front opening, sort of hugged my forehead. Not flattering. It did not have any interior pockets. Ended up keeping the North Face Triple C Down Jacket (size Medium). Its hood didn't have that strange elastic band around the front opening, had an interior pocket, and the length fell below my knees. It was also a bit more fitted in the mid-section to give the (slimming) appearance of a waistline. This should keep me warmer in Boston winters.
I have the arctic jacket in small and its very warm and love it...got this upper west down in small and its a little more fitted but stretches, tighter under the arms. I tried on the medium its a little looser and the sleeve and length is even longer so I decided small. The sleeves are longer but its warm and very light weight...compared to my arctic i think the arctic is warmer because of its hyvent shell 550 fill and arctic is definitely heavier in weight. Even with the 700 fill the shell is not wind resistant and the down does come out of the jacket with wear...i gave 4stars because i do like upper west down but its not as warm as expected.
Anyone have an idea how this compares to the North Face Metropolis? I know the technical details, but I'm more wondering about warmth in the real world, not on paper. In my research I have read a lot of mixed reviews about the warmth of the Upper West Side. I know most people say the Metropolis is so warm, but I have something similar with same fill and want something a bit warmer.

I bought the Artic Parka a couple years ago, and although it's the warmest jacket on the planet (and necessaryon some New England winter occasions) it's kind of a beast to get around town in, like walking around in a sleeping bag. This year, I went with the Upper West Side jacket for something a little lighter and cuter, and easier to deal with, and I am IN LOVE. It's beautiful, fits great, not that many people have it and it's still warm without the bulk. Who knew down could look this good. Bravo TNF.
I did a lot of research before choosing this as my first long down coat. I really needed something warm since I just recently moved to the mountains but I didn't want to look like a bag lady. I also didn't want it to be too heavy or bulky. I liked this coat the best out of all the long down coats I tried because I thought the fit was the cutest: it is more fitted and therefore more stylish and girly looking than some others I tried. I originally planned to go with the black color, but the eggplant purple actually looks really pretty in person so I ended up getting that! The color is understated with a gray color on the inside and is a nice change from the black. I am 5'9, 130 lb and needed the medium for the arm length. The only thing missing from this coat is a cozy soft inner fleece lining that was in some of the other down coats I tried. But other than that I love it. And it is super warm!
