Tundra Sleepingbag: -20 Degree Climashield Neo

Camping in the frozen Siberian plains? Then you must be sleeping in The North Face Tundra -20F Synthetic Sleeping Bag. The North Face packed this freezing wasteland dweller with Climashield Neo synthetic insulation to simulate a Carribean beach on the inside while the icy winds are blowing on the outside of your tent. Firestorm topshell fabric keeps the wet elements off, and a silken inner lining breathes well and feels oh so soft. Overlapping shingle construction and draft collars keep heated air from escaping and a stiff zipper column prevents snags and makes getting in and out easy. The zipper tab even glows in the dark, so sneaking out for a midnight poop becomes a little easier.

Bottom Line: The only thing warmer than The North Face Tundra is Aruba.

This bag has been labeled as a discontinued color for months

This bag has been labeled as a discontinued color for months now. I've talked to a TNF rep, and they say that this color has not been discontinued. Backcountry says that this isn't last year's model, so what's up with the discontinued colors label? There have been a few sales on TNF bags in the last several months, but this one is always left off, possibly due to this label. What's the deal with the discontinued colors label? I think it needs to be corrected.

overrated for a -20

I've only used this bag twice, each night getting to around 10 outside 32 degrees inside tent. I was able to sleep but no where near "toasty" as a neg 20 bag should have you feeling. Even sleeping on top of the Big Agnes 2.5" inflatable matts, I could still feel a slight chill coming through. I've slept in much much colder environs in a 13 yr old +10 down North Face and stayed warmer. I'm a warm sleeper as well so let that be a scale for you. Extremely unimpressed with the feel of this bag for a -20. Nice features seems fairly durable weight is good for synthetic and packs nice. Wouldn't trust it in true sub zero outtings!!

I bought this bag and I plan to use it in Mt. Aconcagua (6962m).

I bought this bag and I plan to use it in Mt. Aconcagua (6962m). Is this bag really prepared for temperatures between 0 and -20 degree? I'm used to down bags and don't really know if I should trust this bag or not. Any opinion or comment is more than welcomed!

This all depends on the elevation of your high camp. If this is a "true" -20 degree bag, you should be okay but be prepared to layer. Just to be safe I'd get the NF Dark Star @ the very least, but if it was me making this decision, I would bite the bullet & choose the Western Mountaineering Puma GWS or Marmot CWM EQ. You don't want to cut corners on your cocoon!

Good Bag

By:

Sweet bag, great quality. I'm a cold sleeper though and therefore use the bag only down to about -10F. But with my other down or synthetic bag or polar fleece liner I've used it down to at least -40F, probably colder. Good old interior Alaska winter!! It's a bit bulky but any synthetic colder weather bag will be.

What is the firestorm fabric, is it water resistant?

It is water resistant as it has a DWR treatment. If you need more than water resistance, you could look at something like The North Face Solar Flare sleeping bag- this bag uses a waterproof face fabric (although it is not seam sealed so not totally waterproof) and gives you a much higher level of weather-proofing in a sleeping bag. It is also down fill instead of synthetic, and will pack down quite a bit smaller. The other option might be to look at something like the Flight Bivy or Backpacker Bivy to give you some versatility when you need that extra water resistance.
