Dress up for a fancy French dinner and put on The North Face Women’s Triple C Down Jacket to insulate you when your evening dress doesn’t. Head-to-ankle 700-Fill goose down holds the heat inside when extra bulky layers aren’t quite up to the establishment’s dress code, and with the insulated, snap-off hood you can keep your hair from getting thrashed by the wind or get rid of the hood for a sleek shopper look. The two-way center zip lets you split the hem for easier walking up the hills as well as provides some venting when you get almost too toasty in the sun.
Soft brushed lining in the collar provides a little nook to shield your face from the cold
Internal media pocket keeps your cell phone warm and functional
Bottom Line: A down, trench coat-style jacket for dress-worthy nights out.
Purchased this coat as a holiday gift for my wife. She absolutely loves it. It has become her primary cold weather coat this year, and I expect it will be for years to come. First and foremost it is so lightweight with the 700 down filling. She truly appreciates the fact that it is long enough to cover her knees during the sub-32 degree days we have had this year. She would recommend it for any woman who has to brave the winter elements daily and desires a lightweight comfortable coat.
From my perspective, the value of this coat is worth it to keep my wife comfortable as she goes to work or does other daily activities. In many respects, would like to see North Face produce a similar long coat for us guys so that I dont have to wear the horse blanket long wool coat in the winter when I am trekking to the office.
Yes, the entire shell of the coat is nylon. The only soft areas are the inside of the pockets. I've had mine since 2009 and do not find any problem with the nylon shell design. Rather, I think the copy-writer got it a little wrong. Heck with the words, its a great coat.
I love it, but it is too big. I never wear anything but a medium or maybe a large. But in this jacket I need the small. There was way too much room -good for extra layers, but it felt big and looked huge. I returned it.

Hi there What would it cost to get this coat w/ a white outer material? No hurry, but would like to have it before a trip to the north before 1/25/12. Or is that a hurry? Thank you, Jay Drew
Sadly, Backcountry used to sell it in an ivory color (I know; I own it and bought it here last winter). Not sure why it's not on the site anymore (that is, was it a purchasing decision or a supply issue?).
I got it for my wife for X-mas and she absolutely loved it. The fit, warmth and length are perfect for her. She's about 5' 6" and uses it exclusively now when she's going out in the NH winter weather. I got her a large so she could layer underneath and it allows her to have a baselayer + a sweater if needed. She typically wears an Ibex zip-up hoodie sweater (last X-mas) that almost goes knee length. This jacket goes below the knee so a perfect combo. The shipping was spot-on too.
My daughter grabbed the jacket one day, wrapped herself up in it and fell asleep on the couch. She's a pro napper so her test run and testimony carry alot of weight!
I highly recommend the jacket and backcountry.com.
Why isn't this jacket available in the ankle length any more? I had one and it's gone missing and I want to replace it . . . . and find it has been discontinued and replaced with the longer below-knee model. ???
I am ordering my second. I got a brown one last year---am wearing it so often I have opted for another color. I am 5'5" and weigh 133. It hits above the knee, not very nipped in at the waist but doesn't make you look like an absolute "tank" either. I do work out---the shoulders and upper arms are not too tight---just enough room to move and layer. I ordered a small. I think it runs slightly large but then that allows for layering. I normally wear a large 4 or small 6 and this is perfect. Great coat. Will keep you warm in freezing temperatures but you shouldn't count on it totally without some other layers. Out and about in Alabama with 25 degree weather running errands I can get by with just a turtleneck. Hope this helps!
I just ordered this coat and am looking forward to receiving it. I want something that will block the wind, while keeping my legs warm. I have heard many good reviews.
I would love to get this coat at an extremely low price or a pre-owned black one that is in good condition. Does anyone one know where I can get this coat fora low price?
As previously mentioned. The arms are too thin. I'm feeling the cold. I'm so disappointed. I really wanted to like this coat. The quality has gone way down. I owned the original longer one back in '07-8. Loved it. Northface bring it back. Backcountry rocks btw.
Hi Ben - you've asked a lot of questions about this coat and seem to be very interested in it, so how about this: order it and try it out for yourself. :) Backcountry has a pretty good return policy so if it doesn't fit you the way you would like it to, then you can just return it. :)
Just because this coat is called the WOMEN'S Triple C down coat, doesn't mean it's only for women. I've never seen a guy wear this kind of coat, but maybe a guy can wear it if they choose to. I have never even tried this coat on before. I wish I could try this on, bit I am afraid that someone might laugh at me.
Don't worry about people laughing if you fancy it go on - when I got my triple c from a local stockist I tried several coats on - the girl serving me was most helpful and gave advice on which long down coat to go for ( although since then I've been back and brought more coats!!)
I think this particular down coat is tailored to fit a woman's body, but there should probably be other long down coats out there that are made to fit a man's body or that are unisex. But I agree, there is nothing wrong with a man wearing a long coat.
Hi Ben - check out TNF's sizing chart here: http://www.backcountry.com/store/sizingchart.html?sizing_id=679&sku=TNF5421&pg_id=205&subcat_id=42&cat_id=12
i purchased this coat for Christmas for my daughter in the brown. She lives and works in the windy cold city of Chicago. She loves the warmth and style of the jacket. I ordered her a large for room for sweaters etc. Fit great. There is one slight problem with the zipper splitting open at times when it should be secure. Not sure why???
Is this coat really ankle-length or does it just go all the way down to your calf muscles? I would appreciate if someone would upload a photo because some of the other I've seen don't really show full length.
I live in Chicago where we get really cold and windy days and wanted a long warm coat for winter The Triple C Down Jacket is long but not warm. I really like North Face as a whole but was very disappointed, I returned it for a similar style made by Patagonia that is much warmer.
I accidentally commented on an older thread, but i'll say a review for these coats again here, in general. This is the perfect winter coat for anybody. These coats have also been consistently popular for us guys as well over the years. I don't know about any new changes that occurred since the one version I am familiar with, but if it is the same as older versions, I can't recommend it enough for males and females alike. It looks cool, and it is super warm. Good Job North Face, and Backcountry for stocking them!
so agree - it's a great coat i also have the 2005 version which is much more feminine although still love wearing it - just wish it has a faux-fur hood
Which version do you have? I'm a guy and I'm interested in the last generation one, the longer version that looks like this year's model. What's your opinion on it? Does anyone ask you about the coat?
Hi Ben - I would recommend the ever classy TNF Black. Be sure to check the sizing guide as well, though, as women's coats are cut a bit differently from men's coats.
That would depend on your build. Women's jackets are typically sized smaller than men's and have slimmer waists. You'd probaby find that even though the jacket would fit, it wouoldn't look quite right because it as cut for a woman's body.
I really wanted to love this coat. Maybe I expected too much based on the positive reviews I saw here. But the down fill is WAY too thin to keep me warm. Admitted I live in a very cold place, North Dakota, but I thought this coat was made to handle cold down below 0. Boy that is not true! I was cold early this week and it was 15. I can't imagine what it will be like in January. The problem is the amount of fill - in the arms it is micro thin! And there are seams every 2 inches where there in NO fill so you have only a layer of nylon between you and the cold! I was seriously disappointed. The coat is made well otherwise, nice pockets, nice hood. But just not made for real cold. If you just need it for walking your dog at 30 F then it would be a good choice. Otherwise look to a different brand. Boy I wish I'd kept my packing slip!
Hi im looking for a long down parka for my husband for when he's walking from the garage into his office and stuff. But he hates the super puffy coats. So i was wondering would either the womens triple c down jacket, or the womens metropolis down jackets fit him??? And would they look wierd on him being there womens jackets?
Yes, the triple C jacket is a popular choice for guys who want a long down jacket. I have a very similar version myself. It is warm, and simply looks like a puffy trench-coat. It looks great and even cool on a guy. I can't answer for the Metropolis, but when I discovered the Triple C, I do remember the Metropolis name come up a few times as well as a good long down jacket for guys. As for sizing I would go a size up from whatever mens size your husband wears. I wear medium mens usually and womens L fits me fine. I am tall and slender though. Perhaps ask Back Country for the exact measurements of the jacket you choose to be sure!
I have returned this coat because I saw someone (after mine had been shipped but before I received) wearing the brown color. I had debated on gray or brown, decided on gray but have changed my mind. Looking forward to wearing this awesome light weight North Face!
is this years triple-c the same material as the metropolis? - the last couple of years have been a duller material - this looks much shinier - i much prefer the metropolis finish - but prefer the longer length
I'm with you about the finish of the Metropolis and the length of the Triple C. I wish the Triple C would have the same finish as the Metropolis. Although the Metropolis is a 600, it feels heavier than the Triple C, which has a 700 fill power. If North Face can make the Metropolis longer like the Triple C, it would be perfect or vise vera. In addition, the shell for the Triple C is thinner, the down is likely to shed, which is another disadvantage.
I am on a never-ending mission to find a coat that actually keeps me warm during the winter. I am 5'9" and the sleeves are actually long enough (size M). This week it dropped down into the teens and I was freezing. The coat looks puffy, but it's actually pretty thin. Definitely not enough loft for such a cold climate. Another drawback is that the inside pocket is lower down and hits me by the thigh, which means I have to unzip the jacket almost all the way down to get to my phone. I wish they would have put the pocket at chest level. For a coat that is this expensive, I expect a lot more. On a side note, I've also tried the Columbia omni heat jackets and don't find them to heavy enough either. I can only assume the designers of these jackets haven't actually spent a lot of time in a cold climate.
I saw this advertised through Amazon, but the advertised price on that site was $209.27. Why is it advertised as being less expensive there than it is here?
I bought this coat in early 2011 for a week-long trip to Chicago. This coat was very warm and kept me toasty during the negative temperatures in February. I would recommend this coat to anyone looking for a reliable, warm, less bulky, coat. I especially love this coat b/c it is a 700 fill coat, but not bulky at all.
Would like to know which coat is the absolute warmest. I live in a very cold place in Canada and have been living with min 46 with wind at times. I'm already a cold person so need the warmest! Thanks
You're certainly looking in the right area. Down jackets with 700 fill or higher are going to be your best bet for warmth and insulation. As for the wind and rain, you may want to look into a heavy-duty storm layer, as many down jackets are not themselves water-proof. Be sure to check the description and the stats at the right of the page.
this coat exceeded my expectations. I expected warmth....but I didn't expect warmth without a huge puffy coat. This coat is half as puffy as I expected....perfect puffiness! I also didn't expect the fabulous deep pockets with Zipper closure - I don't even carry a purse anymore...even fits my camera! The hood is SUCH a bonus and the bottom optional zip-north action is a cool feature in case i need to run in it ;) I get comments on it wherever I go - I live in Cleveland....this jacket was worth EVERY penny!!!
Got this for a friend who moved from Hawaii to Chicago and she absolutely loves it. She said it keeps her warm in the coldest temps and is comfortable and stylish as well. Fits true to size.
This full length jacket is light weight and amazingly warm! I love it!!! I am 5'2" and 115#. I ordered a small. It fits perfectly over a sweatshirt. I would definitely buy this jacket again!
The coat is delightful I ordered one in black in order to save wear and tear onthe brown one. Once the cold weather hits, I put aawy the classic coats. The coat is light, washes well, and does not make one look like a puffy squash. My only complaint is that three snaps on the brown coat (two years old) no longer snap. I remain hopeful that Northface will replace the snaps at no cost and with no hassle. The coat does well when the weather goes up to 45 degrees, providing a solid wind-break effect with no excessive warmth. Great coat.
This is a FANTASTIC coat!!!! I was looking for a long, somewhat stylish down jacket for our freezing New Hampshire winters (and my weekly recess duty), and this more than fits the bill. The Small still leaves you with nice curves, and is plenty long. It hits about mid-calf on me (I'm 5'6"), and doesn't look or feel like you're wearing a sleeping bag... unlike a competitor's that I ordered, and quickly returned, with a familiar New England name! (Think L.L...). All in all, a great purchase!
I like it a lot. It's warm and light. I had looked into this jacket for the last 3 winters but it was always sold out when I made up my mind. I'm a little disappointed that it is not as long as it was in past seasons. I wanted a head to toe jacket and this one now comes only up to the shins.
I'm a guy and I'm looking for a long down coat that isn't so feminine - this one looks very good, are there any guys out there who have one of these and can comment on this?
yes - i've got two (2005 and 2006) version - the 2005 version is more feminine but i still really like it - i've also got a Mamot Montreux, Columbia Luxey Bliss and the TNF Metropolis - just love wearing long down coats.
I finally have this coat tested last week when the Chicago temparature was single digit. This is warm and light compare to my other coats. Keep me warm during my 7 blocks walk to work.
Trying to decide, Mountain Hardewar Downtown, NF Metropolis, or the Triple C.... how to decide... thoughts? I want WARM!!! They all have hoods, and some length, different down fill (though some comments indicate that does not matter.) All else being equal, I am leaning towards the triple C just because it is longer... but maybe that does not matter. can anyone help? also not sure if I should go with Small or Med. (5'5'', 125lbs) I usually am about 4 to 6, depending...
I have both Metropolis and Triple C. I think Triple C is slightly warmer (has a higher down count at 700) and the long length is nice in really cold days. But i think Metropolis does a far superior job of blocking the wind - it is seriously windproof. So if you live in a windy area, Metropolis will likely keep you warmer. I have both because of length options (i am 5'3 - so one is close to knees, the other closer to ankle) - but if it's really windy, i reach for my Metropolis.
Well, I really love this coat, it is soft and silky, light weight, easy to carry on your body, manageble and if you are Up on age, then it is much better to have it on you, you can weae ti any where you go,it is presentable, mostable he logo its not so bigggggg !
Hi I live in england, where we are having our coldest winter for 100 years cannot get northface triple coat anywhere will you post one to me free post and package
It's a fabulous coat - light-weight, warm, longer than any other coat I saw, and fashionable.Highly recommend the coat. Have received many compliments.
Hi. I tried on my sister's Triple C jacket and couldn't believe how WARM it was in the freezing cold! I'm getting one! What size would you recommend -- Hers was a Medium and quite roomy. I'm 5'5 and 117 lbs. Should I get a small or an extra small? I plan to wear long underwear and cashmere under the coat (i.e., nothing too thick).
Peggy...i've had mine for a month...i was debating on size as well. I'm 5'4" and 105 lbs....i opted for the Small instead of the XS to make sure the arms would be long enough and it's PERFECT...can wear big sweaters under it...or a t-shirt and it still looks and feels good!
The Triple C Down jacket is actually a long coat, below the knee to mid calf and is a hooded version of the Metropolis. (You cannot judge the length by the height of the tall model.) It fits well and is lightweight but very warm. My daughter is wearing this coat in Chicago and just loves it. She has worn it over just a tee shirt and layered with a sweater. It is keeping her toasty warm in the extreme weather that Chicago has been experiencing this winter. She tried it on at the store but I bought it online to surprise her. We even got a deal thanks to our credit card site. A great buy!
I am looking for a super coat that has style but very warm in extreme cold and wind (I live in Chicago). Compared to the Pantagonia and the Mountain one you have on your site (also calf length), which would be better? I am 5 foot 8 and weigh 100 pounds so I am thinking the extra small.
In the begining i thought: how is this thin coat is going to keep me warm? But guess what? It does. I love it!!! Whoever is thinking to purchae it, do it... Don't think twice. I received so many compliments, everyone liked it and said it's so stylish !!!
Does the jacket have cuffs that are close to the wrist to keep out air and snow? Also, it was previously stated that this is not a jacket to wear in the rain, however, how is it in snow for being waterproof?
I don't want to take it off when I get home. It is so comfy and warm I sometimes just hang out and snuggle with it.It is also uber stylish! I wear it casual and when I dress up and I always look fab. Best $$ ever spent. Thanks guys-jude As far as size, I am 5'6" and 125 and the XS is perfect. ;-)
The length from the center of the back of a person is 46 inches to the base of the jacket so it should go past your knees...Unless you are really tall...
O.k. I want the warmest down-sleeping bag-with-sleeves coat. I want to be warm when the temps are sub zero and I'm watching a ski race. I don't want to spend over $300, with knocks out a couple of options. I seem to be toggling between TNF Triple C and the Mountain Hardwear Downtown Down Coat. And I need to make a decision quickly as winter is here (I've lost count how many days in a row it's been snowing here in VT), and size small in black seems to selling out, thus reducing my options even further! Thanks!
your description is exactly what I was looking for in a coat!!! I was surprised when my Triple C came and wasn't CRAZY puffy. didn't matter...it's sooooooooo warm! and it's been VERY cold here in Cleveland!
I bought the triple C for my wife who is only 5'2". It looks really nice however, it was a little long for her (3 or 4 inches above her ankles). I would estimate that if you're not at least 5'5" and in heels, this Jacket could simply be too long for you. If you are kind of on the short side and want a jacket that's similar, try the Metropolis. They both look fantastic!
Bought it for my wife for Christmas and returned it as soon as I opened the package. It looks like a nice coat but is so thin. Instead, I purchased the Mountain Hardware Downtown coat for her, it is much puffier and no doubt warmer.
This coat is warm but it isn't durable and not exceptionally stylish. I would never wear this coat in the rain, or even in a moderate snow shower, and the fabric is such that I am always worried it will catch on something and tear. The style is very relaxed and not particularly flattering.
Are you saying this from experience of wearing the coat?? Cause my husband needs a long winter coat to wear when walking from the parking garage to his office so his nice clothes dont get ruined, walking the dog and other stuff fit him with absolutely no problems?? And would it be noticable as a womens coat??
Hi, does anyone have experience with (heavy) rain and triple c? I have to be on my bicycle at least one hour a day, regardless the weather, and I'm always cold, so I would really like to buy the warmest coat there is, but is has to stand the rain. Judith
Hi Judith the Triple C is definitely not the best choice if you are going to spend time in the rain. For just a rain shell check out the stella grace jacket, for a rain jacket with some insulation take a look at the insulated grace jacket and for the ultimate in warmth and protection in a casual jacket the brooklyn jacket is the way to go. Hope that helps!
Hi, I'm also a customer looking at these coats and I'm sorry I don't know the answer to your question, but thought I'd also mention the Patagonia Downtown women's long coat. It is also mid-calf length and advertises as 800 fill down, thus warmer than the North Face Triple C, although also much more $$... You might want to call the customer service of both companies to inquire how they'd each hold up in the rain. Best wishes!
Purchased this coat as a holiday gift for my wife. She absolutely loves it. It has become her primary cold weather coat this year, and I expect it will more...
I love it, but it is too big. I never wear anything but a medium or maybe a large. But in this jacket I need the small. There was way too much room -good more...
