Why would you pack a mere fleece mid-layer for your alpine journey when you could bring The North Face Women’s Thunder Down Jacket, and be surrounded by 800-fill down? This jacket weighs less than most fleece jackets, yet you’ll be prepared for subzero temperatures. Although designed to fit underneath your shell, in a pinch the Thunder will work as your outer layer in crisp, cold weather. When you don’t need it, this down jacket stuffs into its own pocket and stashes in your backpack.
This is a phenomenal down jacket- it is extremely light weight, packs very small, but is also incredibly warm. I am 5'8/size 6 and wear a medium. The Thunder is a must have for the outdoor clothing arsenal/back-up layer for your pack. It provides good protection against the wind, and when temperatures get chilly it is an easy layer and light piece to throw on. I wear this out the door for ski-touring in as low as 5 degree weather, as well as an outer layer at 13,000ft in a biting cold wind to ski back down. It functions perfectly, and allows for great movement and flexibility. Reliable warmth and well cut for women, I also like the stitching and pocket placements. This is a fantastic go-to jacket for outdoor women and versatile for all kinds of activities. The weight to warmth ratio is it's biggest selling point..
Just got mine today and was instantly warm when putting it on. I originally bought in the large, but because I am big-chested and have some hips, it was too tight being that it is tapered. Go the XL and it is perfect, perfect, perfect. The arms are a little long, but they will cover your gloves for even more warmth. I absolutely love it.
I got this jacket for my girlfriend. She was always cold before. No more. And the styling looks really attractive, too, an amazing feat of keeping it looking feminine while offering amazing insulation.

I'm 5'6", 130 lbs, same chest size. I got a small...love it. It will probably be a little longer on you, which I would like! There's still room for fleece underneath, but it's also great alone.
Just received my new Thunder Down Jacket. It was delivered less than 2 days after I ordered it. It is very comfortable and half the thickness of my old one that made me look like a marshmallow. Wore it today, 37 degrees. So warm and cozy. Thank you Backcountry!
Diana, On a day-to-day basis, while wearing, you need to avoid getting the jacket wet (some very light drizzle or light snow will be OK), sharp edges (cat and dog paws) and potentially folks that may be allergic to down. The maintenance phase (washing): You can wash the garment by hand, using a front loading washer and a detergent made for down or you can send the jacket to someone that specializes in washing high performance down jackets... you should be able to do an internet search on the various service providers. Also, here's a nice link if you wish to clean your own garment (there are others as well (http://www.outdoorsmagic.com/gear-features/caring-for-down/2985.html). Also, if you start a CHAT NOW (upper right of a page) the Backcountry rep might be able to provide a wealth of knowledge. Hope this helps!
I bought this for my daughter. It has a very feminine cut and looks great on. I would love to get one for myself too! She has the bluish/purplish color, and it is bright, but not too bright. She has gotten lots of compliments and wears it every day.
Ron. What are your measurements?? I've been looking for a coat for my son.. But he hates mens coats cause they're soo puffy. So do you think the womens mountain hardwear phantom down jacket would be good for a 17 year old boy who's still in highschool?? He's about 5'9' and 190 lbs... Would it be easily noticed as a womens coat?
Getting out of my car the other day a very small tear occurred in the sleeve. I love the purplish color and it doesn't come in this color anymore. Not sure what to do!? Not sure if i can take it to seamstress to fix or just exchange for different color. Just got it last year and love everything about it.
I ordered the empire blue color which is gorgeous, but the fit of the jacket just doesn't work for me. I am 5'8, 110lb. This jacket is too short in terms of the torso portion while the sleeves are way too baggy. When I wear it, my arms look like borrowed from someone else!
Do you think this would be good for a 17 year old boy who's still in highschool?? He's about 5'9' and 190 lbs... Like would it be noticable as a womens coat?? Meaning. Would it be easily noticed??
Hi Kathy, for a high school kid? I doubt that anyone would notice... unless he shows up to school and the girl standing next to him has the same one... the difference will be that the women's is going to have a form fitting body profile, by design so...
I bought the fusion pink North Face Thunder Jacket and am very disappointed with the jacket. The jacket looks like it has grease spots all over it. The dark feathers in the jacket makes it look dirty.
This is a really great coat for instant warmth and toastiness, or if you are going to be out and about on the town and want a warm jacket that doesnt feel to bulky. It packs small and is really light- the stowaway pocket is sweet. A flattering cut while still fitting over other layers and fleeces.
depends on wind and what sort of layers you are wearing around/under it...the wife can wear this with a cotton tee and sweater down to 20ish...commuting-wise...
I'm an extremely cold-natured person, so I was pumped to get this jacket. It can keep me warm in around 25 degree weather, which is about how cold it gets where I live. There seems to be a lot of discrepancy about the "sweater" fit. I am 5ft, 105, and I thought the XS was still quite roomy and not what I would call sweater-fit. I have typically been layering it with a TKA microvelour Glacier 1/4 zip and windwall vest underneath. FYI, this jacket leaves LOTS of tiny downy feathers on my black windwall vest, which I find mildly annoying. IMO, the outer material of this jacket feels a little flimsy - like it could rip at any second. I'd prefer something more like the Redpoint Jacket for the outer material. (which I also own, and love). I got the black, but really wished I could have found the awesome Empire Blue from last year.
Can anyone compare this with the Redpoint Jacket? I actually bought both, but can't decide which one to keep. Which one would be warmer, down or synthetic insulation?
The Thunder will keep you warmer, especially with its 800-fill down. In general, down will be warmer than synthetic insulation, and the synthetic insulation in the Redpoint is pretty light. I'd recommend the Redpoint for not-super-cold days down to maybe 30 degrees and anything colder than that I'd go with the Thunder. I really like the cut and profile of the Thunder too - I find it slimming whereas I find the Redpoint looks boxy on me. Hope this helps!
WAsh warm quick cycle with some towels or ??lighter clothing. dry....absolutely,,,,,with 2 clean tennis balls. I NEVER USE THE HOTTEST DRY TEMP...IF YOU DO NOT DRY DOWN IN DRYER...IT WILL NOT PUFF OUT...YOU WILL WRECK IT
It's a beautiful jacket but big around for me (5'2" 100lbs UK size 8 so I'm on the small side to be fair) it's lovely but hugely boxy on me. So warm and light though that I can forgive this. But the bit that baffles me is the feathers. It's supposed to be a down jacket but I'm being stabbed by quills working their way out the whole time. Down is stripped from the quills? I'm getting quill feathers everyhere. I found a quill feather in my bra getting undressed. It had worked through the jacket, a jumper and my under layer yesterday to get into my bra. It's itchy being stabbed by the feathers the whole time. But at least I'm warm and it is a lovely jacket. Just don't remember the stabbing by quills issue with previous down jackets. Wondering if the U K is getting substandard feathers.??
I'm 6'1 so its hard to find a jacket...i tried the North Face Diez jacket on the other day and it fit length wise! yea..except that i didnt like the finish on ;it. I want more of a flat black than a shiny black. Any suggestions?
I primarily wear only this jacket in SF winters, where temps might be down to the 40s with the wind chill, and I am on a motorcycle, so it gets pretty windy and cold. With a fleecy layer underneath, you could do colder temps, or snowboarding even, as it has a sealing drawstring on the waist. It's super light and comfortable and packs up easily in my backpack. The grey color is a light silvery grey, but very low key.
Cons: It does not do much for your physique ladies, it's a neutral fit, yet no form-fitting looks here. You will NOT look like the michelin man, because the jacket is so lite, but its a bit boxy.
Sizing: True to size. I am always a S in NF and i got a S. I am 36" 28" 37"
Overall: Great mid season outer jacket, and i guess it would work great as an underlayer, but why hide it?
summit series is a pretty slim fit compared to regular TNF sizing; the nuptse, la paz, or aconcagua are three down jackets that are "regular" fit that may be worth looking into!
I wear this jacket in temps down to -20 with windchills to -50 and have NEVER been cold with it on (and only a regular cotton longselve tee under) - in fact at temps above -10 I am usually sweating in this thing. This jacket has a low enough profile that it comfortably fits under my fitted shell. I am lady who is 5'8", 130 and got a M - fits great, might have even been able to go with the S if it weren't for the arm length (which i find the TNF always runs a little short for me). Love that it packs into such a small pack (see pics above) for stuffing it away on the trails or in my pack for easy travel from state to state. Noticed some had questions on where to stow so I also attached a pic for this (Outside, Left front pocket). Enjoy!
This is a great down jacket if you want something warm but not too puffy. Looks: the most stylish down jacket I've seen. It's not form fitting but not boxy either. Warmth: great for milder temperatures. It's 800 fill but it's lightweight, so if you feel the cold you'll need something warmer for a northern hemisphere winter. Sizing: I'm 110 pounds, 5'4". According to the sizing chart I should be a S, but the XS is perfect. I can still fit thermals and a thin wool jumper underneath.
The jacket was beautiful, but unfortunately it was cut too slim in the hips. I'm not overly hippy, and usually wear a 12/14, so I had hoped the large would work well, but alas it did not. So reluctantly I had to return it. Sleeves seemed a bit long too, but I could have lived with that.
I agree. I am also a size 12 and a large is usually big enough. The large was too tight in the hip area. I got an extra large and the sleeves are long but not too long. It is roomy but oh-so-warm!
Everyone says this is the best jacket and that it's so warm in their winters, but my question is... For those of you who own this jacket, where do you live?
To me, that makes a difference. If this thing kept you warm in your California winter, I won't take it as seriously as if someone were to say that it was great for an Alaska or Minnesota, etc. winter. I want to know what I'm up against!
Good question. For that matter - are you just going between car and building or are you actively moving a lot or are you waiting for the bus? I've lived in Minnesota, this likely wouldn't be enough for most people up there. I live in North Carolina, and I wore the DIez (very similar design) very comfortably all winter without wishing I had a warmer jacket.
I got this jacket in the mail and when I first picked it up, I asked, is this it? Did I really pay this much for this? But then I wore it outside in the frigid northern Connecticut winter and I realized just how AMAZING it is. It is so warm, but so light. I am someone who is always cold and it is just fantastic. I had it just hanging up and my friends told me it looked so chic. I got so many compliments when I actually wore it on as well. Backcountry is just fantastic with everything! They helped me out so much and their customer service is top notch! If you decide to order this jacket, or any other jacket for that matter, order from Backcountry.
They have what they have. If a color isn't listed, especially for winter gear they're probably not going to get it since the next batch will be next year's colors.
Mine is from last year's stock and it is loosing feathers each time after wearing it. I am very disappointed with the quality of the jacket considering the price I paid for it. Perhaps, the NF improved the quality of this year's version.
Agreed. Eddie Bauer actually puts a little card with their version of the down sweater that says don't pull feathers out, push them back in and work the fabric to close the hole. It does work. Down will work its way through any fabric so don't worry about it. There are plenty of feathers in there!
I do have one place in the back seam that I pulled a feather from that just kept on coming and coming and coming! But, I carefully stopped and wiggled the outer fabric of the jacket around to help the edge of the feathers to go back into the jacket. I truly think it just comes with the teritory...to be this warm AND lightweight they had to give up the lining! I still LOVE mine. Remember to use a tennis ball in the dryer when you dry it to help it fluff up.
Eli gave some good alternatives. Down jackets are not the best option for those activities. I prefer a technical shell and baselayers so I can dial in to the conditions.
Down jackets aren't the best for more strenuous activities such as running. This will work for light bike riding and light jogging, but I would lean towards the following softshell jackets. They are a lot more breathable and fitting for your activities, and will keep you warm.
My wife absolutely loves this jacket, she wears it all the time here on Puget Sound (we're from L.A., so we're freezing all the time) However, when I ordered this jacket, the photos provided by Backcountry showed a shimmery indigo blue. Really, its just plain old dark blue. If it wasn't so bloody cold that week, we'd have sent it back.
What kind of blue did you order? The ''Empire blue'' or the ''arctic pool blue''? Thanks to let me know, I would like to order the blue of the picture but I'd like to make sure I am going to receive this one, not a dark one as you have received. Thanks in advance Christine
Is the insane blue a lighter blue in real life than what the photo is showing? I saw another photo of this jacket and insane blue looks closer to cyan.
Light weight and doesn't make you feel like you're wearing a huge bulky winter jacket. Pink is a great color. However, there are several spots on both the front and back of the jacket that show dark brown "down" thru the pink and it "looks" like the fabric is stained- if u didn't realize that it was in fact the down (feathers). This leaves me dissatifisfied for the price I've just paid for a new jacket.
I live in Wyoming and there are many days where it is below zero. I'm also active in the mountains during the winter. The Bighorn Mountains may not get as cold as the Tetons but it still gets very cold up there. I'm loking for a jacket/coat that will work in these cold conditions but wont be bulky or heavy (I've got a Carhart for that!!)I don't want to have to layer a lot either. What coat would I look into? I'm willing to wear mens coats and sometimes (like the carhart) the men's fit better. Anyways just wondering. Thanks -Sarah
Sarah, this jacket should keep you warm if you are active down to 5 or 10 degrees F with a decent baselayer but it is not going to keep you warm below zero IMO. For temperatures that cold I would look into the down parkas but they are going to be more bulky.
After buying mountain hardware, patagonia, and sierra design down jackets, I was so stoked when I finally found this one. I have worn it nearly every day since I bought it last October. It has kept me warm in temps dipping well below zero and comfortable all the way up to 50 degree days. I am 5'2" and 100lbs and bought the small, which allows me plenty of room for several layers of layering. I have worn it dressed up in the city and snowshoeing in my mountain town, totally versatile. You definitely will not regret buying one of these great jackets!
Are you able to cinch the bottom of the jacket to avoid drafts? I'm considering a med rather than a small - I think I'm between sizes (5'5", 135lbs, 34/29/40).

to be honest i don't need to cinch with the small because the whole fit is snug--but not tight. i bought the smaller size with the intention of wearing it as an under layer, mostly under a shell and it works perfectlly; I also wear it around town with a thin layer under it.-- more like a down sweater vs. down jacket. I recommend ordering both and sending the one that you don't want back. I found the medium to be too big to wear under a shell, especially in shoulder and arms. But, yes there is a cinch cord--
fits like glove which is nice, but if you want to layer a fleece or sweater, its tight. i am 5'4", 105# and ordered the XS. sleeves are perfect length. a size S would be too big unless you want to layer... a cold snap in Florida prompted the order. i paid for overnite shipping, and it took 4 days. this is more like a sweater. not warm enough to warrant the price. will be returning it...
hello, i'm from Chile sorry about my english but i'm trying to do my best. I really want to buy this jacket but i'm a bit confused about the size, i'm petite 5'2'' and my weigh is 110 pounds i would like you to tell me what size should i buy i'm between XS and S. I would like to use this jacket maybe with a fleece under, I really need your help! i can't try it on because this model is not in my country, thanks!!
I think you should get the S (small). It will let you wear more clothing underneath if you get cold. If you get the small and find you don't like it, call the backcountry.com telephone number at the top of this web page, and you can send it back and get the XS very easily.
This is one of the most versatile layers I have; I love it. I got a small because I wanted to wear it as a tighter an under layer under a shell, or over thin layers as an outer piece. I'm 5'6, 138lbs. I got a medium and sent it back; it would've worked as an outer layer but was long for my arms and wasn't snug enough to use as I wanted. I always have this in my pack as tours, to slip on at the top or for breaks and have been wearing it around town as well. This is a great layering piece. I got arctic blue and it's great (sort of a navy).
I tried this jacket on in the store and immediately loved it. I am always cold and need a soft, light, everyday jacket that will keep me warm. Unfortunately the store didn't have my size so I ordered one. When I received it, the jacket was ridiculously noisy - makes a loud crinkle noise every time you move it. I didn't remember hearing this when I tried the jacket on in the store, as I know it would have annoyed me. I actually went back to the store and tried the jacket on again - just to check - and sure enough, the jacket in the store was perfectly quiet. So my question is - did I get a defective jacket? I've seen two complaint posts regarding noise of the jacket, but all others seem positive and don't mention noise. Why would some of the jackets be noisy and some not? I'm wondering if I need to return the one I got and try for another one - or perhaps would washing it do the trick?
Kim, my wife tried this jacket on and I don't remember the fabric making any noise and seemed soft. Sometimes the material will make noise when it gets cold but will not in a controlled environment like a store. I would not suggest you wash a down jacket unless you have to.
I ordered this jacket in XS, as I usually am an XXS or XS. It fits larger (TNF always fits a bit boxier than Marmot), but it's ok; I can use it as an outer layer with a lot underneath this. If needed, I would use it for a midlayer, but it might get bulky underneath the shell. Interestingly enough, when I received it, it sounded like plastic bags were inside the jacket. The crinkles sound just like grocery bags. Also, it holds its shape; the folded areas stick out (in the shoulder seams, etc.). I love the color, the warmth ratio (packs down very small; granted, I would not use this as a stand-alone piece in under 25F degree weather), and the style (does not make me look 50 pounds heavier). Maybe the seams will go down after a few tries, or the sound will go away after a while.
UPDATE: I have worn this jacket several times now. The sound is going away a little (or maybe I'm just getting used to it), and it's a lot warmer than expected. I wouldn't wear it alone watching a football game in December, but would definitely wear it as a midlayer when skiing. I've worn it both alone and under a shell, and they both work great. It is perfect for running errands in any weather (water and light snow beads off the jacket) and amazingly enough, it's slowly becoming my favorite all-around winter jacket.
How is this jacket different from North Face Carmel Jacket? I'm also looking at Mont Bell. Which do you recommend? Live in Oklahoma where is can get to 20-30's at times.
This jacket has a narrower quilting pattern than the Carmel. The narrower spaces between the stitching gives a less bulky look. The chevron-shaped angle of the quilt stitching is very flattering look also rather than just plain, straight horizontal quilt stitching all the way around. I own this jacket from 2009, and have given one to each of my sons (actually the men's Patagonia Down Sweater--but same "concept" of light weight down with narrow quilting channels) and one daughter in law & 2 sons' girlfriends over the past 2 years (2 of them this Christmas for a total of 6 Thunder jackets since 2009). We all LOVE the jacket fit and warmth and wear it daily throughout the fall & winter season in Michigan and Denver. Almost weightless, yet cozy warm. Don't hesitate to make this purchase!
I was a little apprehensive purchasing this jacket as I know North Face jackets to run a bit larger in size than other brands. With my petite frame (4'11" 100 pounds), I wasn't sure if it would do it's job in keeping me warm. Wow! Two days after ordering my jacket, it fit like a glove! Though I can put a sweater underneath (base layer), this jacket not only looks sleek, its light as a feather (so I don't even notice it on) and it insulates me until I'm nice and toasty. I can't tell you how much I love my new jacket! It's a package deal for size, warmth, and weight leaving me worrying about the bigger stuff in life like shoveling my driveway after a nice big snow storm! =D Thank you Backcountry on an AWESOME deal, beautiful jacket, and superior shipping (it was delivered two days after ordering it). This is a must have this winter!
I am ALWAYS freezing and am considering this jacket for it's weight/warmth ratio. However, I'm concerned that I may need to layer it for total warmth. Is there a jacket you'd recommend that does not need to be layered?
Tara, The warmth-to-weight/versatility is the beauty of the Thunder Jkt. You can layer it under a waterproof shell for the super cold/windy/rainy days, or wear alone on the mild days.
For a down jacket that requires minimal additional layering, I would look to the Prism Optimus Jkt. Or, check out the waterproof/Primaloft insulated Makalu Jkt. & Plasma Thermal Jkt.
I bought this jacket and have worn it all winter. It is fabulously light and easy to wear. I have even in below zero weather worn it under my fur coat for extra warmth and it worked well. It is the warmest coat I own other than my fur. I love it. And the lightness of it is fabulous. I would recommend it to anyone. In fact, I bought another one in a smaller size since i have lost weight and gave my original one to my neice- she plays soccer and borrowed mine once and fell inlove with it.
I love this jacket! I ordered this one and a Patagonia and preferred TNF because of the raglan sleeves and shaped body. The Patagonia jacket made me look like a football player, despite the fact I wanted so badly to love it. TNF got it right. This jacket is perfect alone or layered with a shell. I couldn't be happier with my purchase.
Below is an image comparing the two- the thunder is on the left and the diez on the right. The diez has a much shinier look since it's a pertex outer fabric. Also the weight of the Diez is 9.7oz vs 11.8 for the thunder.
This jacket is amazing. Light, warm, comfortable and fashionable. Its perfect for women with larger chests and athletic figure. It showcases your body without adding the unnecessary bulkiness. Highly recommended. It's my 3rd North Face Jacket and I absolutely love it!
Im thinking about purchasing this coat.. I am 5'10 130lbs.... I want the sleeves to be long enough but not as bulky in abdominal area... should I get the large???
I find that The North Face always runs slightly wider in the chest and waist (but not necessarily longer in the torso), and Marmot usually runs true to size. Hope that helps.
I am 100 lbs, 5'3". Got the XS. Absolutely loved the color, chevron stitching, comfort, fit, and weight, but I have lightweight wool sweaters and windbreakers that are warmer. I have worked and played in all sorts of climates down to negative 40F (neg 80F wind chill), and had two other down jackets over the years, but the description of "youll be prepared for subzero temperatures" and "will work as your outer layer in crisp, cold weather" didn't hold up for me. I wore it over a heavy cotton t-neck and was chilled in seconds out in 50F with a 10 mph breeze, and the narrow elastic cuffs don't keep the draft out. Don't expect it to cut the wind. Will keep you toasty as an under layer, but that defeats the purpose of having such a stylish lightweight go-to jacket. If you run more warm or plan to always be active, you might like it. Sad, but just not the value I needed. Sincerely appreciate the return policy.
I think it will! I bought mine last year and am super happy with it. I spend half my time in Oslo and the other half in California and keep using this jacket in both places. It is very warm yet very light.
I had this jacket on my mind for a month after seeing it in a store but thought it was a bit pricey. I finally found it on sale on Macy's website and asked Backcountry to match the price. They did and I couldn't be happier. This coat is so warm - without the bulk. I live in Northern California and use it every morning to walk my dog. I also skied in it last weekend on a 50 degree day and stayed perfectly warm. I love The North Face brand in general and they did not disappoint with this jacket. I also love backcountry.com - everything I've ordered has arrived in about 2-3 days and the customer service is excellent.
I got the crushed plum color and I love it! I have 2 other NF jackets and this one is lighter weight and just as warm (the other two are gotham and nuptse).
I purchased my NF Thunder jacket last winter. I'm 5' 8" size 10 and ordered the large (it fits beautifully--the medium was too tight in armholes and slightly across chest). The measurement of the center back from base of neck (started at collar seam) to the bottom of jacket is 25-1/2 inches. I do not have access to the sz Medium I bought this year for a gift, so I can't offer a measurement there. I will say the North Face Thunder is a fabulous jacket! I wear it everyday. It's extremely lightweight, yet cozy warm, and it's classy. I frequently get compliments on it (I have the gray one from last season). I purchased the black one for a gift this year and was very pleased with it--as was the young lady who received it. My daughter-in-law and son each wanted the Patagonia version, which I purchased for them, however, the North Face is much nicer. It has more stylish quilting pattern and the fabric is nicer! Don't hesitate to purchase the North Face Thunder!
I purchased the NF Thunder jacket in insane blue and I love it! It is extremely light weight and warms me more and more, the longer I wear it. I usually wear a size small but I'm on the bigger end of the "small" continuum so I ordered a size medium to accomodate sweaters and other bulky winter wear. It fits just perfect and is very flattering. It gives me a waist and doesn't smash my chest so I actually look like a woman in a winter coat. The only con is that it needs another layer, like a fleece, on a very cold day. The blue is much prettier in person. I get tons of compliments! Well done North Face and thanks to Backcountry for the good service and fast delivery!
I own the XS and am 5'5", 108lbs, 34D (or 32DD). It fits perfectly! I love this jacket!@ It is as light as a Kleenex and warm as a kitten sleeping on your tummy! I own the steel gray from this season, but really considered the shocking royal blue version!
If I were you I would go for a Med. I am 5'1" and a 32DD and the Small fits me just right. Snug, but not smooshing me. I think that with a Large you would lose the flattering aspects of this jacket.
my sweet husband bought this jacket for me to keep me toasty since he said my "winter" jacket was completely inadequate. he was right and im so glad he was. this north face jacket is lightweight, incredibly warm and soft, and stylish. it is down without being overly puffy, which i hate since im 5'3". the quality is first rate. buy it, u won't be disappointed.
If you are looking for a lightweight, yet very warm jacket to get you through the winter months - the Thunder Down Jacket is for you. Comfortable to wear due to the very non bulky feel of it. It does make a slight crinkly noise from the material - however it seems to subside the more you wear it. I wore this jacket when it was below zero and I was toasty warm. I have only used it for around the town purposes - so I cannot comment on it for long time outdoor activities. I have an actual heavy duty ski jacket for downhill skiing purposes - but if you are looking for a stylish, yet warm cold winter jacket - this is a winner! Sizing is accurate to what you wear in other NF apparel. Enjoy! : )
I am trying to decide what size of jacket I need. I'm about 5'7", 155 lbs. I normally wear Large, just want to make sure this Large won't be too big. Any advice?
I think the large would be perfect. I'm 5'7.5" and 156lbs. I wear a size 10 clothes. I bought the large NF Thunder last year and it couldn't be better! Nice contours -- not boxy.
It stows in the wearer's left pocket. If you look in there, you will see a silver tab that says "STOW". You just start stuffing the jacket in as you flip that pocket inside out. I hope this helps!
I want this to look fitted but I'm not sure what size to get. I have a NF Flight Series jacket in a S but it's a bit loose and doesn't look fitted. How true to size is this? I'm 5'4" and 110 pounds. Thanks!
I am able to wear a long sleeve baselayer as well as one of their TKA 100 Glacier 1/4 zips on the inside with no problems. I do have, however, a 34a bra size so that may determine whether you need to go up based on your bust size. Also remember that Summit Series items are supposed to be more fitted and the hem will not nearly be as long and far as other jackets outside the series. :)
Thanks Jen. Sounds good. According to the sizing chart measurements I should go with a S, so you recommend going a size down? Would there still be room for a thin sweater underneath? Thanks!
I'm 5'4 and 120. Based on height and arm span alone, the small was too big. The XS is great. I generally wear Small with everything else except for this product and some of the thumbholed Flight Series items.
I love this jacket. I originally purchased it for an expedition to the Antarctic peninsula, and it was perfect. Extremely warm, light/packable, dries quickly when damp (but not waterproof, down does not insulate from the cold when wet, be sure to hardshell for that), and great for everything from extreme cold hiking to just lounging. I've also taken it on trails with thorny bushes, and have chopped wood in it, and have found that abrasions have fared suprisingly well given the very light weight of the outer fabric. I'm pretty small (5', 105 lbs) and had a hard time finding a suitable down, but the XS is well designed and tailored. I can even manage a slim-fitting softshell over top. Highly recommended!
Write your question here...I bought this jacket and find that I lose a lot of the down feathers from a variety of teeny tiny holes in the graphed fabric (If you look super close, the material is graphed). I find this to be so annoying, as it happend every time I wear this. Could the jacket be defective, and how do I go about taking advantage of a manufacturer's warranty?
Once the down comes out, don't keep pulling it out. Pull the down back from the other side so that it goes back into where it came from. It'll stop. If you keep pulling them out, they will keep coming out. If you have an issue with it, you can drop it off at any TNF store and they can send it into warranty for free for you. What warranty does at that time is up to warranty and has nothing to do with the store--Meaning, it is not the store's decision how it is handled.
Don't get me wrong, it's a good jacket, but almost immediately upon receiving it, LL Bean had one in their winter catalog for $100 less and so exact in style/down content, etc and everything else, I felt really stupid for paying so much.
AND
This is a LINER, don't get this jacket confused with a "puff" jacket, it isn't!! I got this hoping it would really keep me warm for a Finnish winter, I'm having my doubts since I'm still only in a November Michigan!
I note on all the reviews everyone says the NF Nupsey jacket is the best jacket for the cold - but this jacket has 800 fill down.... that means it is even warmer, right? I am trying to find the best jacket to combat the beijing winter and snow
800 fill simply means that it is using a higher quality down than the 700. Essentially, there is more down and less feather (the stuff with the quill). Down keeps you warm, not the feathers, since the down has the loft or the "poof" which traps the warm air. The fill power is determined by placing one ounce of down in a graduated cylinder and seeing what volume is occupied by it. The higher the fill powder, the more volume. This means that it is more efficient and can do the same job by using less down.
Hi Kate - This is a common misconception with down jackets. The 800 fill rating does not mean it will be warmer than a 700 fill jacket - it simply tells you the grade of the down that goes into the jacket, not how much of it goes into the jacket. In the case of the Nuptse jacket, it probably has at least twice as much down fill than the Thunder jacket, so the difference between 700 fill and 800 fill won't outweigh the total amount of insulation going into the jacket. The Thunder jacket is made more for milder temperatures and also to be used as a layering piece, where the Nuptse is your middle of the winter super insulated down jacket. Hope this helps
This is a phenomenal jacket! You won't believe how light weight it is and how warm it keeps you. If you're looking for an extremely stylish, fitted, light weight and warm jacket, you won't have any regrets. My favorite jacket ever!
This is a phenomenal down jacket- it is extremely light weight, packs very small, but is also incredibly warm. I am 5'8/size 6 and wear a medium. The more...
I got this jacket for my girlfriend. She was always cold before. No more. And the styling looks really attractive, too, an amazing feat of keeping it looking more...
