Description

More warmth for the weight.

Why would you pack a mere fleece mid-layer for your alpine journey when you could bring The North Face Women’s Thunder Down Jacket, and be surrounded by 800-fill down? This jacket weighs less than most fleece jackets, yet you’ll be prepared for subzero temperatures. Although designed to fit underneath your shell, in a pinch the Thunder will work as your outer layer in crisp, cold weather. When you don’t need it, this down jacket stuffs into its own pocket and stashes in your backpack.

I returned a another brand jacket similar to this, due feathers bing every where. It was embarrassing to be coveted in feathers after taking it off. Does this jacket lose feathers???

Responded on

Every jacket lose feathers.
A new one will lose less. and dont pull the feather out for it make the holes bigers and more feathers will go on you

Responded on

Compared to other down jackets, this one does a great job keeping feathers in. I also have the North Face Carmel down jacket and that one sheds feathers like crazy, but I've never had a problem with the Thunder. In comparing the two it seems like the fabric is higher quality and the seams are better stitched on the Thunder. I'm guessing the difference is because the Thunder was designed as high performance athletic wear compared to other jackets which are designed for casual use. Hope this helps!

Hi everyone, I am a guy that was wanting to get this jacket and I was wondering if anyone had any opinions or suggestions as to if I should get this or a different one. I prefer women's jackets over mens just as a heads up.

Responded on

Well, What activities would you be using this for. Knowing that might help me to help you a little bit better. Price range, use, etc.

Best Answer Responded on

Casual and everyday use and hiking. Don't really have a price range, just looking for a functional jacket that I would like.

love this jacket!

I am so glad I ordered this jacket- it quickly has become a favorite. Super light, super warm and great fit. I am 5'11, medium/thin build and long arms. The sleeve length is perfect, on the long side, perfect. I would buy this jacket again in a snap.

I wouldn't recommend it. It's not waterproof, and when you get down wet it ceases to insulate as well.

Wear it everywhere!

The Thunder jacket in Aztec blue is a beautiful color.... a combo of blue and purple. It is a slim fit rather than the baggy one associated with traditional down jackets. The back is contoured for a close fit. My daughter is 5'8 and 130 #. A size small is a nice fit but she only wears a light T shirt under it. A jacket to wear everywhere.... indoors, outdoors, under the ski jacket. Great buy on sale!

Northface Thunder

I purchased the Northface Thunder in Aztec blue. This is my third Thunder jacket but unfortunately, this one is not working out. The stitching on the arm is coming loose already so I had to take it to the local NF store to send off to their warranty department. It can take up to 6 weeks to get it back. That's a bummer because it'll be spring by then and I really liked the color of the jacket and wanted to wear it. I still have my other two in black and green to wear but am disapointed in the quality of the jacket a purchased at Backcountry.

Responded on

I bought the same jacket in the green. I had the same problem, within a week of purchasing the stitching on the sleeves started to unravel. I too had to send it in for warranty - bummed b/c I'd be wearing it otherwise!

great down jacket

It's super light weight, yet warm enough for sub zero winter hike and nor-easters in the city. it packs small so it fits in any small space.

underarms tight

I'm about 5'8, 130, 36/29/36. I have a large shoulder/underarm area, and I don't like the way that it's snug under the arms. Not enough room for me. Can't layer underneath more than one shirt. Arms are long, I like that. well constructed. Wish there was a way to enlarge this area. A gusset or something.

i am 5'10" and always have issues with sleeve length. how are the sleeves on the thunder?

XXL 35.75in

sleeves are long for me, I'm 5'8, I'd say they are, holding the arms out to the side, about 4 inches past my wrist. My arm span is shorter than my height by a few inches.

Love it, love, it, love it!

Just received my new Thunder Down Jacket. It was delivered less than 2 days after I ordered it. It is very comfortable and half the thickness of my old one that made me look like a marshmallow. Wore it today, 37 degrees. So warm and cozy. Thank you Backcountry!

Great coat

I bought this for my daughter. It has a very feminine cut and looks great on. I would love to get one for myself too! She has the bluish/purplish color, and it is bright, but not too bright. She has gotten lots of compliments and wears it every day.

Responded on

I've been wanting this coat as well and I'm a guy. It seems like a good jacket and I think I may have to just get it now.

Ron. What are your measurements?? I've been looking for a coat for my son.. But he hates mens coats cause they're soo puffy. So do you think the womens mountain hardwear phantom down jacket would be good for a 17 year old boy who's still in highschool?? He's about 5'9' and 190 lbs... Would it be easily noticed as a womens coat?

I'm 5'0, weight 110 lbs, chest 34...what size do you guys recommend me getting? I want to be able to use fleece jackets under the TNF. Thank you!

Responded on

I'd say a small would work, but check out the sizing chart on TNF-

Responded on

I'm 5'6", 130 lbs, same chest size. I got a small...love it. It will probably be a little longer on you, which I would like! There's still room for fleece underneath, but it's also great alone.

I bought the fusion pink North Face Thunder Jacket and am very disappointed with the jacket. The jacket looks like it has grease spots all over it. The dark feathers in the jacket makes it look dirty.

What are the care instructions for the North Face women's Thunder jacket?

Responded on

Diana,
On a day-to-day basis, while wearing, you need to avoid getting the jacket wet (some very light drizzle or light snow will be OK), sharp edges (cat and dog paws) and potentially folks that may be allergic to down. The maintenance phase (washing): You can wash the garment by hand, using a front loading washer and a detergent made for down or you can send the jacket to someone that specializes in washing high performance down jackets... you should be able to do an internet search on the various service providers. Also, here's a nice link if you wish to clean your own garment (there are others as well (http://www.outdoorsmagic.com/gear-features/caring-for-down/2985.html). Also, if you start a CHAT NOW (upper right of a page) the Backcountry rep might be able to provide a wealth of knowledge. Hope this helps!

Getting out of my car the other day a very small tear occurred in the sleeve. I love the purplish color and it doesn't come in this color anymore. Not sure what to do!? Not sure if i can take it to seamstress to fix or just exchange for different color. Just got it last year and love everything about it.

Responded on

You can send it to North Face and they will repair it for you.

north face review

i love this jacket the only problem is sometimes the down likes to come out from the surface which is really annoying.

like it!

I'm an extremely cold-natured person, so I was pumped to get this jacket. It can keep me warm in around 25 degree weather, which is about how cold it gets where I live. There seems to be a lot of discrepancy about the "sweater" fit. I am 5ft, 105, and I thought the XS was still quite roomy and not what I would call sweater-fit. I have typically been layering it with a TKA microvelour Glacier 1/4 zip and windwall vest underneath. FYI, this jacket leaves LOTS of tiny downy feathers on my black windwall vest, which I find mildly annoying. IMO, the outer material of this jacket feels a little flimsy - like it could rip at any second. I'd prefer something more like the Redpoint Jacket for the outer material. (which I also own, and love). I got the black, but really wished I could have found the awesome Empire Blue from last year.

Still love it though!

Not wishing to knock it though, it is lovely and I'm keeping it!!!

Lovely but feathers escape

It's a beautiful jacket but big around for me (5'2" 100lbs UK size 8 so I'm on the small side to be fair) it's lovely but hugely boxy on me. So warm and light though that I can forgive this. But the bit that baffles me is the feathers. It's supposed to be a down jacket but I'm being stabbed by quills working their way out the whole time. Down is stripped from the quills? I'm getting quill feathers everyhere. I found a quill feather in my bra getting undressed. It had worked through the jacket, a jumper and my under layer yesterday to get into my bra. It's itchy being stabbed by the feathers the whole time.
But at least I'm warm and it is a lovely jacket. Just don't remember the stabbing by quills issue with previous down jackets. Wondering if the U K is getting substandard feathers.??

didn't like being stuck by the feather in the coat, wore the coat one time and i notice the feather was coming out the inside.
