A jacket for cold, clear days in town and a mid-layer for freezing, wet days on the mountain.

The cold usually makes your muscles tense and your bones ache, but The North Face Women's Thunder Down Jacket locks in body heat so you feel cozy, comfy, and ready to play. During cold, clear days, the baffled 800-fill down keeps your core temperature steady and comfortable for everyday wintertime errands. When you're getting ready for a chilly, snowy day at the resort, this jacket slide easily under a waterproof shell.

A DWR finish repels light moisture so even if you get caught in a sudden flurry, that 800-fill down won't lose its power to keep you warm. Inverted chevron baffle construction evenly spaces down to eliminate cold spots while adding an element of modern style. Dual hem drawcord,  a high collar, and elastic cuffs keep cold air out, Plus, the packable design mean you can stuff this jacket into its own pocket for easy packing.

Great coat - Depends on the color....

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

This is a great coat, fit is true to size, love the style and warmth, but the orange one isn't a good purchase. I purchased the orange one and the top layer of the coat was so thin that you could see the feathers through the fabric. The feathers are dark grey and brown so it made the coat look dirty, like you rubbed gravel on it or something. I returned the orange and purchased the brilliant blue and it is perfect! Love everything about this coat.

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: True to size

I liked the fit and style of this jacket however when I put it on, the fabric rustled and was noisy anytime I moved my arms. I actually had to return it because I couldn't get used to the rustling noise,

perfect mid-weight jacket

  • Fit: True to size

Love it! This jacket is lightweight and good for most weather, but works well for layering with a heavier jacket on really cold days.

my wife loves this jacket!

just know

  • Fit: True to size

this jacket is adorable, however it is lightweight, like a windbreaker. I wanted something more for cold evenings at sporting events etc.

Wasn't happy

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

This jacket is not warm unless you wear a shell over it. Super cute and looks great, would be good for a early spring jacket but not the dead of winter like it is right now. Def not warm enough for 15 degree weather :-/ I returned and purchased the NorthFace Boundary which is amazing!

Hot Mamma

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift, but have feedback to share
  • Fit: True to size

I got my mom this jacket for Christmas, she wanted something very warm yet packable. She wears this jacket all the time and says that so far it has done everything of it she would expect or want.

Two years ago, I got this as a gift to my sister in-law. This year, I had to buy 3 additional ones for other relatives (christmas), the word spread around because they love this jacket so much. One big plus is that it looks good on them and it does the job. I give it 5 starts too based on the feedback I have gotten.

I live in southeast connecticut and work training horses. Im outside and in unheated areas everyday from 6 am to 6 pm. I have a long down jacket from northface that i love to teach in, but i cant ride in it due to the length. I am having trouble finding a jacket that really keeps me warm to work and ride in. This last week we were having negative temperatures with wind chill and i need to find a better coat! Thanks for help and suggestions.

This 'jacket' is best for late fall/spring; or, layering. It's not a stand alone jacket for all day fridged temps. Also, these are not windproof, nor rain proof....just a casual mildly cool to somewhat coldish' weather...and then, if you stay highly active.

I would suggest something that's wind proof, and possibly rain proof (like a Gore Tex fabric) a Patagonia Primo down jacket, that's light weight, has lots of technical features that allow for great venting. They are wind proof & water proof (not just water resistant). They are also a good length...not too long, allowing great movement and flexibility.

Only thing is they are indeed pricy, but worth it. If it's out of your budget, try one of the other great jackets by Patagonia (they're just made better, and have more high tech features than North Face).

Other wise, look for a jacket with all the above added features, and you'll be good to go!

Hope this Helps!

Try the North Face Nuptse 2 Down Jacket. Its heavier than this and the material is much more durable. I ride in mine and it holds up really well even tacking up horse and lifting saddles all day. It's also a really good length and hits right at the top of the hips. Its not waterproof, so I am assuming this would be for dry conditions or in a covered arena, but it is water repellent for short periods of time in rain and I would think you would want something that isn't a hardshell so that your movement isn't restricted.

North Face states that the average center length is 26".

I'm looking for a warm, light weight jacket for my 82 year old mother who is handicapped. Many jackets are so bulky that it is really hard for her to get the thing on/off. Was hoping this Northface in the pretty blue would fit the bill. Any thoughts or tips on how warm and/or light this jacket is?

Responded on

At 800 fill down and 11.6 oz this would be an excellent choice for a combination of warmth and weight. I would also auggest looking at the Arcteryx Thorium, MHW Nitrous,or Patagonia Down Sweater. All excellent options in the same price range.

Love it!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I purchased a black one for myself and a gray one for my daughter in college last year for Christmas. It's our go to jacket! It's so lightweight and love the fact that it stows in it's pocket. It's great for temps in 40's down to the 20's. Only con is this one didn't have a hood for a rainy walk to class. Otherwise it's great, give it 5 stars!

Lightweight, warm, & flattering

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

This is my wife's go-to jacket for 6 months out of the year in Boise, Idaho. The jacket has an excellent warmth-to-weight ratio and is available in a variety of great colors. The arms are longer than similar jackets in other brands and the overall fit is flattering for a down jacket. She is 5' 6", 118 lbs and wears a size S. She had an issue with the seams ripping in a few places after several years of tough use but TNF replaced the seams without any hesitation. She would absolutely recommend or buy this jacket again.
