Oh hey! I brought mine to work today.
Yes, I would say it is most definitely shiny.
Yes, I have found the pertex to be durable, I've brushed up against a couple sharper things in this jacket and been surprised when I haven't found tears.

Not sure about sizing, since I am female, but I found mine to run true to size and I ordered my normal size with great success.

great travel jacket

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

i purchased this jacket with the sole purpose of travel.
i live in michigan and make frequent trips to miami in the winter.
the jacket is perfet to wear to the airport, then put into the carry-on.
it takes virtually no space when compacted and is extremely light.
you could also use it as a pillow on the plane, by stuffing the jacket into one of the two front pockets.
i would not recommend this jacket for everyday use in the winter, as the material is quite thin and probably would not stand up well to daily wear.

So Warm, but minimalist build

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

This jacket is a cocoon of warmth. Coming from the Summit Series line of product, this jacket was meant for climbers/mountaineers who need a warm, but yet lightweight down layering piece. That being said, it is manufactured using the finest, 900 fill down and a Pertex Quantum GL ripstop face fabric that is designed for compressibility and weight savings. Cell phone/media pocket, headphone ports, etc are not offered on this purpose built jacket. If you want a lightweight, extremely warm down jacket, I would highly recommend the Super Diez.

Warmer than you think

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've had this jacket for a year or so now and can't say enough good about it. For such a lightweight, compressible jacket it is incredibly warm and comfortable. It seems to be perfect for just about any temperature without overheating or getting cold. While I was a little concerned how durable the Pertex shell would be, it's held up great over a year of abuse.

Warm and Light

I bought this jacket a couple months ago and it is finally starting to get cool enough to start wearing it. This jacket is crazy lightweight, the combination of the ultralight fabric and super warm 900 fill down insulation make this jacket quite possibly one of the lightest most packable insulation layers you will ever own. That being said to save weight The North Face strategically built this jacket with weight savings in mind. When you are trying to shave ounces you can't afford to put in a bunch of pockets and features that you will never need at the Summit. All in all I am loving this jacket and if I am not wearing it, it will always be at the ready in my pack this winter.

Poor design for North Face's flagship

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

The jacket fits well, has that shiny "love-it-or-hate-it" finish (which personally, I don't mind). But in an age where the average guy carries with him a wallet, phone, a set of keys, and earphones, a breast pocket would've been very welcome, if only for convenience (my old TNF jacket had one). I'm not sure why this $350 jacket was stripped of a breast pocket, but I'm sure the folks at TNF's design department had a good reason.

My second gripe is with the stitching near the collar. I don't know what material they used, or why it was used in a way that it was, but once zipped-up all the way, the stitching on top of the collar is just plain sharp. After a 20-minute walk this morning I had a red cut across my throat (not to sound dramatic, so I've attached a photo). I can only imagine how annoying this must be on a real mountain hike.

My third gripe is with the material. It's shiny, I get it. It looks cool, and certainly feels nice to the touch, but why use such a fragile material? On a recent hike to Telescope Peak in California, I brushed up against a few branches, and the jacket has permanent scratches and puncture marks.

I'm not entirely sure where the "Summit Series" tagline comes from, but if the material is showing signs of wear (and certainly tear), after just a day's hike, then I'm sure TNF must've meant something else when they decided to stamp that big Summit Series logo on the sleeve.

In summary, having been a big fan of TNF for the past two decades, I think this will, in all likely hood, be my last North Face product. For a flagship jacket, it really just plain sucks.

What's the total weight of the down and feather? and what's the percentage of the down? thanks,

The North Face does not publish the fill weight of their jackets but the ratio of down to feather is 90/10.

My last TNF product....I've had enough.

  • Gender: Male

This Jacket employs quality material however they were put together by The North Face. The stitching is bunched up in at least half a dozen places and if pulled on, simply breaks the pertex or thread. There are loose threads "looping" out in a few places as well. It's not worth my time contacting The North Face, they want you to send the item to a repair center (you pay shipping :-) ) where they attempt to cobble things back together. I've NEVER gotten anything back from them that was properly fixed.

I have the same problem!!! For what you pay for the jacket you would think they would have no snags on this jacket!! MY NORTH FACE LOGO IS PEELING OFF AS IF IT WERE A STICKER!! anyone else having this problem??? I even have a small hole which the down feathers have made the hole bigger and bigger!!!

Responded on

yea my summit series logo has begun to erode/peel. Great product, but stop cutting corners TNF.
