I bought this pant in the color black the fall of 2009 and have worn it all winter snowshoeing. The pant is comfortable, waterproof, warm, and stylish and true-to-size; I'm usually a size 6 so the small/short fits perfectly - I love it and hope it is again available this coming fall so I can buy another pair. The pant is well-made and Back Country people are courteous, knowledgeable, and friendly; their service is quick and efficient!

The fabric itself actually is waterproof, but the pant is not seam sealed, so cannot be called waterproof - however, this is pant is probably the most weather resistant softshell fabrics on the market. Unless it is raining, you are going to stay plenty dry. They have a fleece backer on them, so in mild conditions you will be fine without long underwear, cold days you will obviously want to wear an extra layer-

I needed a pair of water resistant pants for my Patagonia and Cape Horn vacation where we took daily excursions out on zodiac boats....these pants are awesome! They fit like a glove, didn't take up too much room in my suitcase, and even though they were not very thick, they kept me warm, and dry! The true test was 60+ MPH winds with snow at Cape Horn, and I was still warm. I wear a size 8 and bought the medium, I did end up ordering the long and I'm only 5'7" but the regular were a little too short for me. I plan to wear these out during the Chicago winters too because they look like a regular pair of black pants.
I have the 2008 version, but not much has changed on these... First the fit: North Face tends to run small (in shirts/jackets) but I'd say with their pants they are true to size. I was THRILLED to get these in a petite/short size. Being a curvy girl, I can actually wear these pants with or without a base layer and they aren't overly tight in the thighs/butt like many others I've tried.
Second, the use: I actually bought these for cross country skiing in the backcountry. I also live in the mountains and it snows quite a bit. Now, on a groomed slope or run, or if you have thick boots, you'd be good with the built in gaiters. For my purposes, I found I sometimes I have to wear another gaiter over it to keep the snow out. I wear waterproof hiking boots around my hometown, and my crosscountry boots are fairly small. The built-in gaiter isn't made for this type of boot. This is of NO fault of the pants.
Pants are breathable, snow/water resistant for all my needs. Since they are low rise, I would recommend a longer parka/shell on your back. Great pant and great fit - I love wearing these!
I made the purchase to go on a winter vacation with a group a friends. I live in a beautiful island, tropical waether all year round, I do not ski or snowboard, so I definitely wanted to buy gear that will keep me warm and dry, the North Face STH pants did it. I was able to enjoy all my snowboard lessons. All of you beginners know for a fact that at least 50% of the time you spend it with your ass on the cold snow going down those learners slopes, this pants kept me warm and dry. I am slim 125 lb, 5.6", so I went with an xs size, it fit perfectly (first I order the s, but it was big on the hips and waist) and I was able to move with no problem. The pants also have a couple of neat pockets were I was able to keep my stuff, like money and lip balm. So for those of you looking for a warm, dry and neat look on those slopes, this will do the work :)
hi, I am 5'3", around 130 (more muscles as I am told that I don't look 130), size 6 pants and the small fits fine. There are 2 adjustable velcros in the back (very well hidden) to help pull the pants tighter around the waist.
I've had these pants for two winters and they are fabulous. They're very stylish so they go well from the slopes to the bar and they're super comfortable. They stretch well and are great for backcountry skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and cold winter running. I've worn them for all of those uses and have no complaints. If you're in a big storm, they aren't totally waterproof, but they wick the moisture away. I live in Park City and have been known to put on a sweater and just wear these out even if I didn't wear them for workouts - they're great if you have to walk in chilly temperatures to your destination.
Got these for a 4 week trip from Colorado to the Tetons, and then Brian Head. Super soft inside, extremely warm, and looks great. Can go into any pub, coffee shop, or store and not feel like it shows I've been in the same pants for 9 days straight. The brown is a nice dark, great size, not sloppy. I'm about 5',115, athletic build. Ordered sm & short they fit great. Would get another pair.
