Your staff is pretty light and you just have two spell books in your pack, so The North Face Women\222s Sorceress GTX Hiking Shoes should be just the right mix of support, waterproofness, and light weight for a fast journey. This low-cuff shoe treats your foot to a breathable mesh upper so you get less swamp, and the waterproof Gore-Tex membrane comes in handy when it starts to drizzle or you encounter spring run-off. A sturdy toe cap, cushy footbed, and grippy Vibram sole increase comfort and sure-footedness.

Bottom Line: Light on your feet.

The technology you speak of is called Northotic. A simple design really, according to TNF Northotic "The newly designed Northotic™ is a multi-density footbed that provides enhanced stability, support and cushioning on the trail.". that's your answer in short, if you do not liek it, perhaps invest in a premium after-market insole.

Skinny in the toe box?

Still trying to figure this out since I'm not the one wearing these. However, on two longer hikes, my 7 year old has complained of pain near or on her pinky toe - though the length of shoe seems to be right on. It hasn't stopped her from wearing them or being excited to hike, but I'm wondering if it will break in and she'll find more comfort or if the tightness will persist...

Every single shoe I have ever worn has been a size 9, but the 9's in these were waaaaay too small.

I too have a pinky toe that gets squished in certain shoes. It is difficult to tell in the store which will squish and which will not... I have found merrell, salomon, asics and chaco brands to be the most accommodating for my little pinkerton...

I had the same problem with North Face shoes. They would fit perfectly except for my pinky toes, which would feel quite squished after walking for a while. I ended up having to try other brands because of that, which stinks because I love North Face, and they make some good-looking shoes, but looks don't matter if they don't fit correctly.
