Very versatile!

I've been using this for my everyday backpack for school and emptying it out and using it for backpacking many times over the last few years and I love it! It's very adjustable so it is easy to get comfortable especially with those big 'ol hip straps, in fact all the padding on this is huge, it's great! I have been able to hold everything I needed for up to 3 nights! And with some smart planning you go longer.

There are a couple of things I wish were a bit different:

The way the outer pockets are designed, they become almost useless with the main body full. It would be nice if they bulged a bit instead of being flush. Also at just over 3 pounds it's a bit heavy for my liking.

But even with that in mind it is still the best bag I've ever had

    A really beautiful backpack

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is definitely the best backpack I ever had. I use it for school and travel as I have a lot to carry around, since I really like the hip straps which takes off the weight from the shoulders. I also really like the stylish and hot appearance, and I like the large overall capacity as well. A perfect bag to carry if you are going on an airplane.

    The big wide one!

great pack if you want a large wide pack. I ordered this pack to be a large vol daypack for cool/cold/rainy days. But it was a bit too large! TNF packs are solid and good construction, this one is like a full on military style pack, very wide and deep. I went for something else smaller for my daypack needs. This pack is very similar to the TNF Terra 45, but the Terra 45 is narrower and higher with same belt and look and finish of the Solaris 40, even the blue color is the exact same.

The North Face Solaris 40 Pack

This is one of my favorite overnight packs. The Solaris is designed ergonomically minded with extra padded shoulder straps and a heavy duty waist strap. The design allows you to utilize all the space possible actually making the pack seem more like a 50 or 55. Inside it is more than possible to fit one solo tent and its footprint, compact sleeping bag, 2 days worth of clothes, GSI Minimalist cooking set, 2 days worth of food, and a few other essential overnight gear. It’s too small to include a sleeping pad, full cooking set and other luxury items but it’s perfect for me since I would prefer 8 hours of comfort while hiking and a couple of hours slightly less comfort while at base camp.
There is a open mesh pocket and a zipper enclosed pocket on each side. At the bottom there is a zipper enclosed pocket for a sleeping bag with a stuff size no larger than 12” x 4” I recommend the North Face
Aleutian or the Clayman. There are three main compartments, a small one in the front for all of your basics that require accessibility, the middle one has organizers for small gear such as sun tan lotion, compass, maps, or whatever you need. The large compartment will fit everything ells you need as long as you are a minimalist. It will fit only a solo tent with a stuff size no larger than 17” x 5” I recommend the Marmot Eos 1 or the Big Agnes Fly Creek. Also there are compression straps on each side to tighten your gear up nicely.

        Pretty good overnight pack

The Solaris is a solid overnight/very large day pack. I have generally used it as a day pack, but it almost too big for that purpose (my bad on that front). On the other hand, it is perfect for an overnight pack with a stuff space in the bottom with a trampoline bottom under the main compartment to divide the two as needed. It is water reservoir compatible and has great side pockets (both internal and external)as well as trekking pole loops which is nice. The shoulder straps are comfy and the hip belt does a good job taking weight (I am 6'0" 180lbs). I would say the straps and ride are not as comfortable or advanced as some of the better Black Diamond and Osprey packs (again my bad for not buying one of those), but overall the pack does the job and is durable - I have taken it up and down Half Dome and I have had it fully submerged during cold swims in Zion National Park and it still looks great and nothing has broken.

Hey, I'm looking for a malleable bag I can...

Hey, I'm looking for a malleable bag I can go on my traditional two-night hikes with. So, I was wondering if this bag could fit a lightweight 1/2 person tent along with a compact sleeping bag and two days of clothing? (Some small supplies as well, but surely no kitchen sink.)

Can the waist strap be removed?

Can the waist strap be removed?

That feature is not listed on The North Face's site.

Filling a 40L pack up though, you would want to use the hipbelt to help evenly distribute the load to not just cause pressure on you shoulders.

her hips, her thighs, she got me hypnotized.
