warm and comfortable

By:
February 2, 2010

haven't used them enough to warrant 5 stars, but very happy with them so far. incredibly warm, and i've hiked in them around 0 with single socks. surprisingly comfortable and reasonably light for cold weather boots. nice details as well, easy on and off. probably worth the extra star soon, don't hesitate to try them for fear of the brand's often shaky quality. great boots with backcountry's great price and service.

Great for Snowshoeing and Around Town

By:
February 2, 2009

This is a great versatile boot for walking around town and snowshoeing as well. It has excellent traction on snow, slush, and ice—with good/fair traction on black ice. The waterproofing works well; I used them in knee deep powder for 2 hours without gaiters and my socks were dry—though the snow cupped at the top around the ankles so gaiters are needed. I wear normally just wear gym socks and they keep their warmth. I have gotten them down to 5˚ F. The sizing is true, I wear a 9.0 and I have a 9.0 which fits perfect. The two features I like most are that they are very light in weight which helps maintained their comfort when I wore them all day Christmas shopping with my wife at an outdoor mall and they are flexible which is great for snowshoeing. They are not ideal for driving, but still work fine. Breaking is no problem, but when accelerating the boot presses on the back of the calf, so it is uncomfortable 20% but that is mainly only when getting on the freeway. The only real downside is they take about 1 minute to but on and 20 seconds to take off, but other than that I loves these boots.

Obviously they're going to wear out faster on pavement than they will in snow/ice, but these are really durable so expect them to last a very long time regardless!

Working for me: warm, dry and comfortable

By:
January 20, 2010

I purchased these boots to use for general winter get-around boots, snowshoe work, winter hiking, and working long nights at the observatory. They handle all those activities well, keeping my feet warm during periods of activity and total inactivity for hours on end in very cold conditions (0F down to -15F so far). They are dry. They fit as expected and are true to size. They are lighter than you would expect, making the usual chores of boot-wearing a lot easier: easy to put on and take off, easy to walk long distances, etc. They grip the snow and loose ice very well. I have had no issues with rings breaking or any other issue. I might not be as harsh as some on gear, but I am not easy-going by any means. Recommended.

yes, but watch out for the top of the boot where the laces loop in the plastic grommets might break if they get caught on anything! Mine broke when the boots rubbed up against each other.

Plastic lacing hooks break

By:
January 16, 2010

I just returned a pair of these I purchased last season. Four of the plastic lacing hooks broke. One about 2 weeks after getting the boots and three more this season. They seem to catch on something, trip me up, and end up breaking. Other than that I loved the boots. Warm, comfortable, look good. Why they would make a good pair of boots like these with plastic parts is beyond my comprehension.

TNF GOOD STUFF

Great boot warm waterproof.I will say it is better if worn in just snow and not sidewalk or street wear because of the soft compound of the sole.No doubt that this boot is made for lots of snow!!

Way way way more advanced. The LL Bean ones are just day-to-day winter boots, designed for slush, shoveling the driveway, etc. These are stiff enough for crampons or snowshoes, made of more advanced materials, and have hugely better traction. And they're the same price. I'd get these any day.

3 stars for now.

By:
November 9, 2009

Very comfortable boots. Not as heavy as one would think. I've only tested them in 30 degree weather so far and they're very warm. Anything warmer and feet are starting to sweat. The lugs do not last. I've had 4 of lugs on the bottom of the boot just rip off. Not sure if it's a problem with my boots or this just happens to all the boots but that is why i'm ranking it 3 stars. If my feet are warm in -20 degrees this winter then i'll bump the stars to 5 but for now it's only 3.

Widely recommended

By:
July 3, 2009

This boots are great!!
In cold weather (near 0 and some ºC below) you feet feel warm enough, and for 20ºC+ you can still use them without sweating.
Their lighter than they look. They're very comfortable for long walking on street or over stones, you just don't feel them. Very easy to wear and unwear.
Talking about waterproof, it's great, you can get your boot inside water/snow up to the plastic laces loop with even a drop of water getting inside the boot.
I widely recommend them for either city snow walks, or either light cross country snow walks.
