Go light and fast with The North Face Skareb 40. This Flight Series ultralight pack is a smaller version of the Skareb 55 that is ideal for overnight backpacking or climbing trips when weight is at a premium. The Skareb 40 comes in three sizes for superior fit and its active-cut contour hip-belt and X-2 aluminum suspension system allow you to pick up the pace with ease. As you gain miles and altitude, the split-contoured shoulder harness and back panel's E-VAP technology circulate more air to keep you dry and comfortable. When the storm clouds move in, a rain cover located in the left zip pocket keeps your gear dry, while your hard-shell is within reach in the front mesh pocket. Grab your ice ax from the Skareb's gear loop and make your way to the summit. Catch your breath, take your water bottle from the right zip pocket and enjoy the view.

Bottom Line: The ultralight North Face Skareb 40 Backpack is for hikers or climbers who need a high-performance pack without the weight.

Best Dang Pack Ever

I traveled in Europe for 3 months with this, lent it out to a friend for multiple trips to Mexico, gone on a dozen 3-5 day camping/hiking trips and I've been all over the US with it both on the road and in flight. It always, ALWAYS fits in the overhead compartment on any plane no matter how small the plane or how much stuff I can pack into it. The internal frame makes for a slender profile when weaving through the airport or weaving through trees in the forest. The frame provides ample support and the pack will rest off your hips rather than weighing down on your shoulders like some of the less rigid internal frame or frameless packs.

Access to the main pouch is via an opening on the top that rolls up to close. I don't see how people can stand most packs which have a smaller "top pack" that clips on to close off the top and provide access to the inside. You'd just have this top part flailing around when it's open, I don't get it. This direct access method seems easier and more convenient to me, but it may just be my own preference.

The side pockets are the perfect size to put your Tom's style shoes into. There are multiple spots to hang a carabiner from should you need to clip something on. The Outside mesh pocket on the back which is somewhat expandable is handy for books or maps or Twizzlers. There are some straps that go around the side that I've used to carry a tent in its pouch on the outside of the bag to leave more room on the interior. (a Tadpole 23 compliments this pack nicely)

Because I've used the crud out of it some of the interior coating, the rubbery kind of stuff on the inside, is starting to peel off. I've got a couple of punctures too that I believe would have happened with any pack made of this lighter weight material so it's not upsetting just disappointing because they no longer make this pack.

I've had to resort to scouring craigslist(nationwide) and ebay and snatching up spares because I just love it so much I don't want to think of a day where from extreme overuse it finally gives up the ghost and I'm without one.

The skareb came in a 40, and a 55L, but I think the 40 is the better choice. It also looks like just to muddy the waters they came out with a slightly different variation of the skareb in a 50 and a 65L, but the top access is different and the outside pockets are different as well. With the 40L it forces you to cut down how much you take with you, but still leaves enough room if you're really packing wisely for all kinds of stuff.

Even though you can't see the bag very well in the picture my expression depicts just how awesome this bag is.

If you are planning on carrying a tent and a sleeping bag, this pack is too small. This would be a nice daypack, but it wouldn't be able to carry larger items. I'd recommend looking into packs that are about 3000 - 3500 cu in if you are planning 2-3 day trips.

My son just joined a boy scout troop and I'm looking for

My son just joined a boy scout troop and I'm looking for a spacious backpack that will allow me to tie down a sleeping bag/mat. The backpacks I see on your website doesn't appear to have room to add those items on the outside. Any help would be appreciated!

hola dude, i used to be a venturing boy scout too. What you need is a 2000-3000 cubic inch internal frame backpack. I would recommend mountain hardware packs, ospry packs or TNF PACKS

Incredible, just need to know how to use it.

I purchased this backpack before living in the middle east for 4 months while going to school there, and I have no idea how I would have survived with just my school bag. We went on many 4 day trips (some food provided) and this bag was perfect. I had plenty of room and it was very durable. If you DON'T roll the top correctly it will start to tear and pull, but I caught myself early and its perfect. The true test came when I lived out of it for 10 days in Egypt. I had everything I needed in there (again food provided, but i did bring some with me) with room to spare for other things. I like that the zippers are hard to open b/c that means its hard for water to get in. I dropped it in a river accidentally with my camera in it, and after about 10 seconds, everything was still fine! If you can pack light, you can go for days living out of it.

Fine for Kilimanjaro

By:

We bought the small and medium models. I really appreciated the light weight at 19,000 ft. The included pack cover comes in handy in the forest. The hydration pack pocket fits a 3 liter bladder. No problems with workmanship. The belt, chest and belt clips look flimsy but they've stood up for 9 months, now. The external cords and gear loop were handy for stowing trekking poles on gentle pitches. The cords also compress the pack when carrying smaller loads for day hikes in the Shenandoah and overnights on the AT. Drawback - single main chamber makes packing strategic.

TNF no detail?

I recently purchased the Skareb 40 size M so this is slightly larger then the small and I found the sizing to be just fine. I suggest is you have questions about your sizing specific issues go with the M instead of the L.
One of the problems I did find though was pics. I must have looked at over 10 different sites plus the North Face and could only find the basic same 3 images for the and the Skareb 55 (the bigger brother of this pack). For me this was solved very quickly by the staff. The gearhead I talked to online in the chat had a buddy in the warehouse who also had this pack.. and a digital camera. He was so kind as to take several shots of the pack my choice, then emailed them personally!
That is what made or broke the order for me. The super service. But alas I got screwed in the end and charged double shipping for me international order and had to pay double customs!
As for the pack well the 40 size M for me is enough I pack out pretty light but would be hard pressed for a tent and food. This is a hostel goers dream though!
