Exactly what's needed and no more.

The minimalist design of The North Face Shaffle Jacket betrays its technical ingenuity. Special 700-fill Eastern European goose down offers superior insulation but remains extremely compressible, and strategically mapped baffles keep the insulation in areas where it's most need to minimize weight while maximizing warmth.

  • 700-fill Eastern European goose down for extreme insulation and compression
  • Strategically mapped and shaped baffles keeps insulation in critical locations
  • Pre-cinched hood, sleeves, and cuffs seal out drafts without adding weight
  • Two large interior pockets hold more than a liter water bottle each

Its a great insulator jacket, I like TNF gear, mostly because I'm from CA and so are they. Likewise I've had awesome service with them when it comes to fixing/replacing gear. But the problem is TNF is over-priced at full retail value, so I usually wait till I can get it on sale. If you can get it for 30% off or more, then I say get it, otherwise maybe go with something else that can do the same thing. I'll follow up with another review once I get to Alaska and start climbing.

Fit: 8, everything fits great except the arms are a little long, but it includes velcro so you can cinch it down.
Cost vs Actual Value: 6 at full retail, 9 at sale price.
Style : 10 - Its the one thing TNF always seems to get right.
Compactibility : I was able to get this into a 4L stuff sack, if I had a compression sack I'm sure you could get it down to 2.5L - 3L size

There's nothing like a new puffy. This one seems better than 95% of the offerings out there thus far. The arms are articulated, so you can go overhead without lifting the whole jacket up. Its extremely warm and much less bulky than other down jackets I've owned. Quality product.

This jacket is amazingly warm for how light it is, or is it amazing light for how warm it is??? Anyways, the "strategically mapped" baffles basically mean increased mobility. When Renan, Conrad and Jimmy climbed Merus Sharks Fin, they all wore this jacket, and were super psyched on it. This is a great belay jacket for cold conditions, or for brushing snow off your car when it dumps.

why you offer the jacket as 800 fill down and is only 700 fill down

The North Face web site says it is a 700 fill on the detail screen and 800 fill in the specs.

Indeed, The TNF web specs indicate 700 fill. Why pay this much for a non-800 fill jacket? Not worth the price - if you ask me.

the fill power has nothing to do with the warmth of the jacket! I work for an outdoor retailer and its surprising to see how many people want jackets that are 800 or 900 because they are "warmer" look, the fill power is the size of the individual pieces of down in the jacket. the north face nuptse, or even the shaffle is a 700. the north face micro thunder or the patagonia down sweaters are 800. do you really think that is going to keep you warmer than this shaffle?? it wont, I promise.

Warmer? No. You are correct Keegs. However, the "fill factor" does contribute to packability. (but probably not too much in this case).
