You step off the tram into freezing, harsh 50 mile per hour winds. Living the dream, right? Zip up The North Face Sentinel WindStopper Softshell Jacket and point it downhill.
WindStopper soft shell fabric for completely windproof protection
Hem cinch cord to keep icy updrafts at bay
Can be worn as an outer layer or as an insulating mid-layer
Which is warmer: The North Face Sentinel or Khumbu? I have Cabela's Windstopper fleece jacket and it's just too hot to wear past 35 degrees & takes alot of room in pack, 28 oz. I'm looking to wear alone or layered from <20-50 degrees. I have a separate Gore-Tex shell.
I was unsure if the lighter weight of the Sentinel would be warm enough and afraid of getting another jacket too warm to wear. I went ahead and bought the Khumbu based on price and gambled it would do what I wanted. Pass! Because it doesn't have the windstopper, it helps to keep me cooler going up hills, unzipping works too. I've worn it from low 30's to high 40's with 7-10 mph wind and lightweight longsleeve poly shirt. Certainly more severe conditions would require layering or the shell. Yesterday it was the microvelour shirt under the shell in 40 and light rain. The North Face clothing gets my vote.
Interesting issue. The Sentinel with the combined GORE Windstopper and microfleece would be the warmer of the two since the Khumbu just has the microfleece. It should work well in that degree range, but you may need some wind to wear it around 45 to 50 degrees.
I bought this jacket for my fiance as an everyday winter jacket. He doesn't do anything on an everyday basis that requires something wildly technical, with lots of reflective material, or with a lot of bells and whistles. He is 6'2", about 190lb, and the XL fits great. The jacket is sharp looking - not flashy or over the top - great with casual everyday wear like jeans. He says it is pretty warm, even with just a t-shirt on underneath. It repels water though he has not stood out in a deluge for an extended period of time. He seems to be able to move pretty well in it. We're both really happy with the purchase and would definitely recommend it, especially for someone who wants a jacket that is more understated and fashionable.

hey I was wondering what is the difference between the sentinel and the pamir northface? It seems like the Pamir is just for windy and cold days but the Sentinel is for windy cold and wet days...which is what I need also if you know any other northfaces that could suit me let me know Thanks!!!
The Sentinel Windstopper utilizes Gore's Windstopper textile, which is 100% windproof. It has a light micro-check fleece backer.
The Pamir Jacket uses Gore Windstopper textile, which is also totally windproof (0 CFM)
The Sentinel will be a touch warmer because it has a microfleece backer fabric on the inside. Both are water resistant for a short period, but shouldn't be worn in long periods of precipitation. You would need to pull a dedicated rain jacket/shell over the top.
To cover the cold, wet, and windy, look at some of The North Face Triclimate jacket, also called 3-in-1 jackets, where you essentially get a liner that can be zipped into a weather resistant/proof outer shell. Some examples are: Condor Triclimate, Atlas Triclimate.
For more technical outings in mind, look at the Plasma Thermal, Makalu insulated. Hope that helps!
If you're looking for Warmth from TNF, this is much better value than the Denali Jacket. It'll keep you warmer in anything stronger than a slight breeze, and you won't look like every other 20 something Dude on state street. Not only is it Windproof, but also pretty water resistant. Triple Threat!
does anyone know what is the difference between the Santinel jacket and Mckinley apex jacket? is the santinel better in keeping the wind out then mckinley?
The Sentinel Windstopper utilizes Gore's Windstopper textile, which is 100% windproof. It has a light micro-check fleece backer and is really abrasion resistant.
the Mckinley Apex uses TNFs own version of windstopper material which is recycled Apex Climateblock. It also has a fleece backer, is abrasion resistant and is about 5 ounces heavier, and a bit cheaper. Both should fit about the same. Good luck!
Hey Todd, the Sentinel is not waterproof. This is a softshell so it will be water resistant. It will shed water in a very light rain or snow, but it is not waterproof.
North Face is normally more expensive, but the quality and looks of this jacket justify the cost. It suits my needs perfectly. I would highly recommend this product.
Looking for a warm jacket (temps 10+F). My build is wide shoulders but short torso...many jackets that go longer than waist are too long for me...any thoughts?
Some reviewers are saying it runs short over the waist, so this may be right for you. As far as the temps, you will want to layer up under it or be very active to not feel cold approaching single digit temps.
As much as I wish it was, since I love the styling, it is not. The technology behind windproofing is very similar to waterproofing, however this jacket lacks taped seams. For this reason in rain, or when enough water pressure is exerted against the seam, it can force water into the jacket thus causing it to leak.
