The North Face Men's Sentinel WindStopper Jacket uses Gore WindStopper and efficient core venting to create an ideal heavyweight softshell jacket. Rated at 0 CFM for wind permeability, the Sentinel's WindStopper construction serves as an impenetrable barrier to cool breezes and arctic blasts alike. While the Sentinel jacket keeps air out well, it still keeps you comfortable as the softshell material breathes easily. As you reach the crux, open up the Sentinel Jacket's core vents to let in a little extra air and keep your cool. Grab some grub from the specially designed pockets without taking off your pack and climb on in comfort—the fleece lining keeps you warm and chafe-free. The Sentinel's flatlock seam construction keeps weight and bulk to a minimum.
Bottom Line: The ideal jacket for aerobic activities in chilly weather.
Really comfortable and warm jacket. It's great for pretty much everything except bitter cold. Though it's a technical jacket, I use it for casual wear, and it's great for staying warm without too much bulk.
I really like this jacket. I own a few The North Face jackets and this is a great addition. I've had this jacket for 2yrs...my version does not have the waist cinch or the hook and loop closure cuff adjuster but I actually prefer that. As many have already stated, this jacket is very windproof. I wash this jacket with Nikwax so that I could wear this out in a light rainfall with no hesitation. The style and cut of this jacket is superb...it offers a sleek minimalist look. The only minor downside to this jacket is that it is not warm, but I do not think this is a negative because it makes this jacket more versatile. I did not give it a full 5-star rating because the microfleece interior sticks/clings to whatever shirt I'm wearing underneath, be it cotton, wool, or a technical base. Also, the price is a bit high...I'm glad I got this at the The North Face outlet for less than $100.
This is essentially a fleece, I dont know why you would put this fleece over another fleece. Yeah it is windproof, but the temp rating is really hard to determine. Are you going to be sitting down all day in the cold? Are you going to be running, very active, or just constantly moving from place to place? In reality even if you know that, it is still hard to determine unless you try it out and see if it works for you. This is pretty thin fleece and is mainly windproof. I would consider a softshell for something that is windproof, water resistant and about as thin, but if you are active keeps body heat in better, yet breathes so you dont overheat.

My boyfriend bought this and I was skeptical at first at how much it would keep him warm and the money he dropped to buy it. I must say, I'm impressed. The windstopping material cuts the wind and somehow the material keeps him warm in 40 to 50 F degree weather. Layering it with a hoodie or track jacket underneath would be very effective for those guys opting out of the bulky winter jacket look. Does a great job of keeping light drizzle out. However, for a lesser priced jacket, the North Face Apex Bionic you can get almost the same thing. The North Face Pamir would also work if you are looking for more of a fleece type jacket with windproofing rather than this soft shell type jacket.
I actually like this jacket so much I bought it twice. I foolishly left the first one on a summit after a long winter ascent and didn't realize I didn't have it until i was almost back to the car. I went back a few days later, but the jacket was gone, so i had to order another, as I never had one I liked as well. The thing I like so much is that it really is a wind stopper, like dead stop, but it doesn't hold heat in. My hiking parters have to stop and shed clothes. I wear one layer and a vest under this jacket and don't get overheated or cold when I am hiking. When you stop you have to add a warm layer, because this jacket has little bulk. But when you're moving, it's fabulous.
I bought this jacket mainly for when I ride my motorcycle. Does the job of keeping the wind out. Doesn't keep me warm, but it keeps the wind out. a little wind gets through the neck, but that's when I'm going over 60 on my bike. A GREAT purchase.
The jacket is super warm and comfortable with the high-loft fleece. It was not for me, though. If you're one of the people who thinks that The North Face jackets' sleeves are too long, check this one out. The sleeves seemed shorter than most (which was bad for me). I also didn't like the collar. If you had the back of the collar up, the front of the collar was also up. I guess it wasn't flexible enough. I didn't care for the cuffs either.
Purchased the jacket for both outerwear and for under a Gore-tex shell. It has worked well and except for really cold conditions, I have not needed the shell. Even though it is thin, it's remarkably warm. The only complaint is with the fleece inside the sleeves which makes slipping it on and off a problem with clothing that has its own nap.
I liked the feel of this jacket - it is very comfortable and warm and did not have the almost-neoprene feel of some soft-shells out there (iuncuding the 2008 TNF Apex). Unfortunately, the arms were too short, which is the first time ever from my many The North Face coat purchases.
This is an outstanding, technical jacket. If you are looking for a kick around soft shell or wind jacket look elswhere. If you are willing to spend some $ then get a Sentinel. I love the alpinist cut of this jacket, and Gore Windstopper is top shelf. I disagree with the previous review, the Apex Bionic is not even the same sport as the Sentinel. The Sentinel is everything you would expect from a Summit Series product by The North Face.
This jacket is amazing, it states its windproof and I took it for a test ride on my scooter and sure enough no wind penetrated the jacket. The only spot I felt a chill was down the zipper, it does have an inner flap backing the zipper but if they has one on the outside this jacket would be totally windproof. The warmth that it provided me on my ride was amazing, as long as you have it zipped up this jacket could be used well down into the 20 degree mark. The fabric has a nice sheen to it and the fit is perfect, my only gripe is that the cuff is kinda cheesy with its thin elastic vs a cuff with a adjustable hook-and-loop strap. Looks like a inside liner jacket cuff. Bottom line, if you like thin warm coats this is the one for you.
I got this jacket for my outdoor runs during the winter months here in Iowa. I love it. Great wind blockage and fit. Very thin and great quality. I would recommend it for any out door activity.
I have to start by saying I love The North Face gear. It holds up well, and has never fallen apart on me. With the Sentinel, it is extremely thin and just not worth the money. I chalk it up to the trademark wind stopper material used. I would suggest getting the North Face bionic which uses The North Face's version of WindStopper. It does the same job but you save 50 bucks.
This jacket does what it says, stops the wind. If you're looking for it to keep you warm, keep looking. In cold weather I throw a thermal on underneath and I'm set to jet. I love the coat due to it's fit (modern/slim) and of course the color. Everybody always rocks the black The North Face gear, it's nice to stand out. Overall, I really like this jacket. The price is a little high but if you want the name brand The North Face, you gotta pay. And since most people wouldn't pay that for this jacket, less people will have it. Get my drift? I also wear it under my snowboard coat. Hope this helps someone with their buying decision.
Really comfortable and warm jacket. It's great for pretty much everything except bitter cold. Though it's a technical jacket, I use it for casual more...
I really like this jacket. I own a few The North Face jackets and this is a great addition. I've had this jacket for 2yrs...my version does not have more...
