Thanks to Polartec Thermal Pro fleece, The North Face Men's Scythe Jacket protects you from frosty winter chills, whether you wear it solo or under a shell. The Scythe’s performance fit and high warmth-to-weight ratio make it ideal for backcountry ski tours or mountaineering trips where weight counts. Side stretch panels allow for a wide range of motion, and three front pockets hold all your essentials.

Bottom Line: Cut through the cold.

The perfect jacket for it's purpose

By:
November 18, 2010

Let me start by saying that if you are looking for the perfect all-around fleece jacket for winter that will be warm, block wind, shed light rain, and look awesome, you're out of luck on two of those fronts. This jacket is less windproof than standard fleece, and while it doesn't absorb water because of the DWR finish, it won't shed it in anyway because of the high-loft exterior. However, if you are looking for the perfect layering piece, you have found it. It weighs the same as a marmot 200-weight powerstretch fleece, but has the warmth of a 300-weight fleece, compresses very well, and breathes like no fleece I've ever worn. It's amazing for excercising in the cold if there's little wind, and it layers beautifully under a hard or soft shell outer jacket, making for a highly breathable, and very warm system.

This jacket and the MHW Monkey Man fleece are almost exactly the same as far as materials go. Both are Polartec Thermal Pro with Powerstretch side panels, and they weigh the exact same amount. The only differences come in fit and style, as the Monkey Man is a slightly bulkier Standard fit, whereas the Scythe has TNF's Alpine fit, which is a much more athletic fit.

I am a 5'8" 140lb runner and I love the fit of the small.

Hi James, I am having a difficult time choosing between The NorthFace Scythe and Mounain Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece. About design, I love The Scythe but I prefer the color the Monkey Man Fleece offered. However, my top priority is the fuzziness of the jacket and easy to taken care of. Will it damage the northface scythe jacket if I machine wash it regularly?

Ben, I've been wearing my Scythe pretty much non-stop for the last three months. I've machine-washed it several times. I don't tumble-dry, though. Dries in no time just hung up. Seems to be as good as new.

So far so good...

Cuddly heaven

By:

Super happy with this jacket. Looks great for casual wear. Fleece is extremely soft and cuddly. Very lightweight, very warm. Fairly slim cut (Medium worked perfectly for me at 5'11.5", 160 lbs) -- Hooray! -- I get annoyed when garments have lots of excess material for a beer gut that I don't have! Good stretchiness, too.

Fleece is not windproof at all. But the extra breathability makes this more comfortable to wear indoors -- perfect for slouching around a chilly cabin. And when the wind blows, a shell on top makes a full winter combination. This is a great layering jacket.

Great Casual

By:

To be honest I have a couple of the Mountain Hardwear Monkey Mans and didn't really need this but I found it on super clearance at a local store so I bought it. I have been very happy with it and nothing beats it for taking off the cold winter chill. I wear it mostly for casual things. I wore it once as a layer and was cooking hot so I haven't done that again.

Great fleece

This is jacket is very soft and warm. Keep in mind this jacket is meant to be a thermal layer piece. It has a snug fit. That is the way it is meant to fit. It is not windproof. Use a shell on top for protecttion. Very breathable. I am 5'9" 175lbs and a medium fits well.

Super soft

By:

At 25 to 45 degrees, this is a phenomenal lightweight top layer. I have bought this jacket twice. The first one got left on a Frontier jet heading to Denver - someone is enjoying it somewhere. What is Best about this jacket is how soft it is.

Cozy yet Thin

By:
December 24, 2010

I purchased the NF mens scythe jacket about a week ago. It took 4 or 5 days to deliver, and when i felt the box, i knew i was in for a surprise. The jacket was incredibly light, thin, but extremely comfortable. It was much more thin than any other north face jacket I've ever worn. I immediately returned it and got my $150 back. I highly recommend buying from this site, i got a 100% money back guarantee, the customer service is excellent, but the jacket is not.

I do own one, also I am 5'9 180 lbs Athetic build. I wear a Medium, fits great.... it is a "summit series fit" which like I said in my review, its more of a slim fit to be a bottom layer compared to a regular fleece, I like my fit for layering, but If I was going to mostly use it for casual wear, I would go with a large.

This fleece is not intended on being a "windstopper" or thick, Its polartec "thermal" and polartec thermal is all the same with a different company logo, this one happens to be North Faces version. As stated in a few of these reviews, its similiar to the Mountain Hardwear "monkey man" its a great fleece for its inteded use which is layering, or casual spring wear
