I've bouth $200+ jackets from TNF which I ended up returning due to sizing and feather issues. The 2006 RP jacket was my first TNF jacekt and I've loved it ever since. I bought the blue version with the logos stitched to the jkt and in size L. The jacket is 6 yrs old now and its in great condition but a little big for me now. I ordered the 2012 model in black and size M and it fits me perfectly. I'm 5'9 178lbs. I wish the logo was stitched to the jacket. The jacket feels a little stiffer and thats good because I believe it has a stronger wind resistance than my 6yr old RP jacket. I love primaloft jackets because you don't have to worry about feather bleedings. I owned the catalyst and nuptse before and it bled feather almost everyday....The RP jacket is not the warmest out there and it is not warm enough for winter in seattle unless you layer with good fleece hoodies. However I like jackets that are not too thin and not too warm. This jacket perfect for me! I had a tough time deciding whether to get the blue or black...The blue is nice too. Looks great with light and dark jeans.
I really like the look/style of this jacket but wish it had a hood. Can anyone recommend a similar jacket similar in style, but with a (preferably removable) hood? Thanks.
The Redpoint Optimus by The North Face is very similar, with a hood. Also, check out the Stoic Luft Hoody and the Patagonia Micro Puff hoody. The hood is fixed (not removable) on all the jackets I mention, however
I like these jackets, I have had a few over the years. The fabric is pretty durable but still thin nylon. One thing I wish they would change is the boxy fit to a more fitted style. It is also pretty warm for how thin it is as others have said. Size is pretty true to charts. I am 5'10" 135 lbs and 38" chest, and a small is good.

Its by far the warmest and lightest layering Jacket I have ever come across . for the warmth there is no bulk at all. North face is using Primaloft Gold its the warmest wet or dry . you really can't get any better for this type of insulation.
Can someone explain to me why there are 2 Deep Water Blue versions? One is Deep Water Blue and one is Deep Water Blue/Deep Water Blue. I tried to find out on the North Face website but they also have it listed twice! Please help.
Not a huge fan of north face products, but this one I couldn't help but buy. This is one of my favorite pieces of gear. This is my go to jacket in the winter. Great to wear around town when running errands. Great as a layer under my shell when I go skiing. It's super warm, yet not bulky at all. It compresses really nicely to fit in your pack when touring too. I use it to keep me warm when we stop and break for lunch on tours. Works great as a pillow too on overnights. This jacket is great. The primaloft does a great job of insulating. I am always warm in this jacket, but never overheat. I can often wear just a t-shirt underneath when I go out around town, and it still keeps me warm. If you are looking for a versatile insulating layer, look no further. You have found your jacket.
You can wear it by itself in cool temperatures but I wouldn't consider it a cold weather jacket on it's own. IMO you would want a decent fleece underneath or wear a shell over it for colder temps.
For my '07 Varius Guide jacket. I have both in a discontinued Black,(on sale) can't see the difference in this black or the new TNF Black. Both jackets are great on their own, zip them together and they offer some serious cold/wet weather protection. I was looking for a Denali Fleece but I think this is a much better zip-in liner for any North Face compatible shell, it makes it so easy to take the jacket on and off no matter what shirt I have on. Great system.
What I've found interesting about North Face jackets is that they only vary in width between sizes. So even though I am 5"10 and 145 lbs and typically wear mediums and larges, I am of a narrower frame and wear smalls for North Face. Seriously, the arm length and top to bottom lengths are exactly the same. So if your wider, you might want to go for the M or L.
You can check out the sizing chart just below the price to compare your measurements. I have found it to be pretty accurate. Also to consider is how much you will layer with the jacket.
I have a 2003 beat up hyvent shell and a 2007 mountain light shell...the redpoint zips into both and is super nice on its own. Incredibly light, much less bulky than the Nuptse I had...and is super warm! I can't write a full review because VA temps are not too bad right now..but I'm finally done with the perfect liner and stand alone jacket for my shells. I'm very happy with my purchase. I can only imagine with a little layering underneath I can pretty much sleep in the snow. Granted...I'm talking Virginia here, not Mt. Everest...someone extreme adventurer will have to review it for all that... I'm also very happy with the feel of it, its very easy to put on, and feels much, much lighter than fleece...and for me, feels nicer and smoother than fleece.
