Description

Carry all you need for a Recon mission in comfort.

Take a load off your shoulders with The North Face Recon Backpack. Although the Recon holds plenty thanks to its massive 1830 cubic-inch capacity, it also helps you out with lugging all that stuff around. The Backsaver bottom panel is angled to shift your load closer to your back, thus reducing back and shoulder strain; the sternum strap (which includes a safety whistle) also helps distribute pack weight.
  • Padded laptop sleeve holds up to a 15-inch computer
  • Laptop sleeve doubles as water bladder pocket thanks to included hydration port
  • Breathable, padded airmesh back panel increases carrying comfort
  • Large front mesh drop pocket holds extra layers or damp items, and it expands to hold bulky items like a bike helmet
  • Front organizer compartment and front stash pocket keep your electronics and other essentials in their place
  • Side stretch pockets carry your water bottles
  • Waist belt-keeps pack from bouncing around on weekend mountain bike rides, and tucks inside bag when you don’t need it

Great Day Pack

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Use this pack daily on day trips around Korea. It has more than enough room to carry water and supplies for the day. It has extra room to carry my wife's things, so she doesn't have to carry a purse through the crowded area's of Korea. Awesome pack!

Great all around pack

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have used this pack from hiking to school and it stands up to everything from rain to dirt to the floors of classrooms, would buy another one, really like the exterior mesh pocket for a rain jacket and the compression straps

Good school backpack

Good Pack

Use this pack as my commuter and gym bag, wish it was a little bigger for commuting, but it works. Great side pockets for water botttle. Mesh front pocket is good for accessory stuff and fits a bike helmet. Top front pocket is good for keys and wallet.
Overall good versatile pack.

Awesome.

I love this backpack. It is not as big as I thought it was going to be, but it is still big enough to fit all my books for school. It has great support, and I LOVE the colors. I honestly could not be any happier with my backpack. Also, I ordered it and was not expecting it to come for two weeks or so, but it arrived at my house a couple days after I placed my order. It was awesome!

Is this product the men's or women's? I can't tell, but I've been told the women's is in fact a better fit for a woman. Truth? I'm a 5'2' female.

Responded on

This product page is for the men's Recon. The women's recon is item# TNF5576. Or do a search on 'RECON' and you will see it. I suspect the women's specific model would definitely have the opportunity to fit you better.

Responded on

This is the men's pack. While there's no reason it couldn't fit you, the women's pack is likely to better fit your smaller torso length.

Good student/computer pack

The laptop storage space has some nice protective padding at the bottom. This space will accommodate up to a 15" laptop with no problem.

The water bottle holders on the outside hold bottles securely (unlike some similar packs). There is a good selection of pockets and spaces for pens, calculators, keys, and books. I like the compression straps, the sternum strap, and non-removable waist belt. The mesh padding helps keep your back dry. The zippers are nice and beefy.

Identical to TNF Borealis (item# TNF5573) which sports front bungee shock cords.

Versatile and Effective

I needed a versatile backpack for college, day hikes and going to the gym. This does the job. The Recon is compartmentalized so you can pack quite a bit and not feel clunky. It's built tough yet comfortable. I love this backpack because it makes my day to day life much easier between work, school and the gym. Definitely the best backpack for these purposes that I've owned.

Good Size for School

I'm a college student and I couldn't find a backpack big enough to fit all of my books until I saw the Recon. It has a laptop pocket which I put my 13" apple in, has good back padding and is wicked comfortable. The side pockets are also perfect for fitting a nalgene bottle. It isn't waterproof so only take it hiking if you are positive it won't rain.

Hi, I'd like to know the size of this...

Hi, I'd like to know the size of this backpack, mainly the length and width, I'm 5'5" and my torso length measures 19' so I'm looking for something that measures within that range.

Responded on

Hey Yuan, this packs' dimensions are:
18.5 in. x 13 in. x 8 in. (48 cm x 34.5 cm x 20 cm)

And is mostly a day/computer pack/bag... so torso length isn't as critical since it won't carry heavy weights...

Pretty Good

I am a fan of this backpack. I got it for a ridiculous steal at $30, so I have a hard time complaining. I have used this on short day hikes as well as an every day pack for school for 2 years. No breakdowns yet, but some of the stitching has started to come undone... Here is the breakdown:

Note: mine is the old version without the new padding on the hip belt, and slightly different shoulder straps

Pros:
- Nice padding
- Mesh pocket is useful for quick stashing (I use it for my bike helmet or rain coat)
- Computer sleeve
- Handy media pocket
- Plenty of space for books
- Chest strap
- Double bottle holders - one for coffee mug one for water bottle

Cons:
- Worthless waist belt. Seriously, why is this thing so narrow?
- Most popular backpack on campus, you will lose it in the piles
- Fraying stitching on shoulder straps

I have not had any issues with the elastic wearing out or gotten tired from carrying less than 10lbs of computer and or books. I don't recommend it, but I consistently load this thing with 25-30lbs of books and computer and have not had an issue. This is likely outside the bounds of what this pack should handle, but what can ya do?

Overall: My favorite all around pack of this size, get it on sale if you can. Why not save the green?

overrated

bought this pack, it is too heavy, even w/nothing inside. if u put just one book and a computer it gets tiring carrying it or holding it. the front mesh pocket is ugly and the elastic gets stretched out easily after only using it lightly a few times. tnf need to up their game and make the pack light while still being durable.

The North Face Recon Backpack

We ordered this backpack for my high school daughter to carry her tremendous 3 inch binder and books. Everything fits great and the backpack is performing like a champ..but we didn't expect anything less from The North Face.

Nothin' I don't like!

I've used this bag from everything to travel, internet work on roofs, backpacking, and urban use. During the internet duty it endured constant, constant abrasion. The only real wear(pilling)is on the back panel where the roof was constantly rubbing it. It also sat in Texas sun for hours on end (10-110 deg.F). I took it backpacking with 25lbs aboard. I had a down puffy, rain wear, food ,a military goretex bivy, big agnes pad, cook ware. ect...It handled it all very well. The small hip belt does actually put some of the weight on your hips. The hydration/laptop sleeve is padded on the bottom and sides; it makes for good insulation also. My laptop is HUGE and it fits in this bag with little room to spare. My favorite feature is the mesh front compartment, it is very durable. Velcro products do not snag it, and it will hold 2 mid layers. Both water bottle pockets will hold a full size nalgene. AWSOME BAG!

Great Travel companion

I love the ease and comfort of this back pack for travel. I am using it to hike next month in Colorado. Took it on trip to Boston to see how it would be and I packed it full and it did not sag and was comfortable. Love the cushiony straps.

Great pack!

I am extremely pleased with the Recon backpack. Lots of great stow pockets for everything you need, well-designed, great back support... the only thing I would add to it is maybe an expansion option, the main compartement gets a little crowded when you put things in the front pockets. Very happy with the pack though overall!

Does it fit a Five Star zip up binder...

Does it fit a Five Star zip up binder well?

Great Bag

I recently used this for a 10 day vacation and it was perfect. I can get my laptop, a folder, charger, 5 days of clothing in a compression bag and other gear without it being so full that the zippers are strained.

Only downside is the inside organizational pockets on the smaller compartment are kinda floppy and don't hold things that well. I'm going to add some zippers and velcro to help this out.

I also wish the top sunglass pocket was lined with a softer material to prevent scratches.
