Put on The North Face Rainer Short and ditch the board meeting for an afternoon with the new spring buds. When the warm air of April finally arrives in your town, go admire the budding summer on your favorite trail. The new spring smell of the woods is a sign that the cold is gone and a summer’s worth of good times lay ahead. The Rainer will get you out in style and protect your thighs from sunburn no matter how many board meetings you skip.

Bottom Line: Put the boss in his place.

Talk shop with all the gear freaks out there: ask 'em questions, upload/browse photos, and give your 2¢.

a reliable pair of shorts

these are pretty good shorts, i wear them almost exclusively. the rear pockets are cut deep so your wallet stays put and the fabric is soft and doesn't seem to wrinkle too bad. they are a great hiking, biking, and casual short, allows plenty of legs movement without restrictions. only complaint is that the front pockets do not have a deep well to them and i have lost something while riding a bike. i am 6'4" and 190 lbs, bought 34 reg. the shorts sit about 2 in below my navel and reach down to the top of my knees

Like the The North Face Rainier Surplus Short, they fit at the waist, not below the waist, at the seat, or whatever. They also don't have the baggy crotch of some shorts, giving lots of freedom of movement without a gusset, and no chance of hanging up on the nose of a bicycle saddle. No cargo pockets, and no flaps or buttons on the rear pockets. Suits me; if you want that stuff order the Rainier Surplus Short.

The fabric is lighter than the Rainier Surplus, and the weave looks like it might be called Rip Stop Cotton. Again, it suits me.

The fabric did tend to wrinkle badly after the first washing and drying. I found no other negatives, and this might improve with age.

Next fall, I plan to order they style in long pants, but may go with the Rainier Surplus in spite of the cargo pockets, just to get the heavier fabric.

For my preferences, this is as close to perfection as I've ever owned.
