The North Face made the Pumori Fleece Jacket with recycled material, which means all that material won't get sent to the landfill-graveyard. The soft, comfy recycled Polartec Classic 200 fleece makes this jacket useful for backpacking, ski-layering, climbing, and trips around town. And you get the added benefit of feeling eco-good.
Doesn't it feel good to used recycled plastic to keep yourself warm, it sure does to me. The 200 fleece weight is perfect for layering in the colder digits or just by itself in the cooler ones. I layer it under my TNF ski shell and those two things are all I need to stay warm in single to negative digits on the slopes. The handcuffs are great because they are so small and keep snow out when I attach the clip to the sleeve of my shell. Only problem is the fleece seems to wear out quicker than others, but hey your using recycled materials, can't complain!
not REALLY two pockets inside... but the outside pockets are sewn in such a way that you can use the fabric as a pocket that closes along 3 sides, and opens from the top; so it's a pocket, but not one that closes tight, but works good enough for most things. I use this when I have it zipped in to a compatible shell, bad part is if you even bail while skiing/snowboarding, you lose everything in those pockets
Wore this jacket on a 3 day hike. Temperatures down to the 30s at night and I was warm enough with this, an Icebreaker 200 long sleeve shirt, and a rain shell to keep the wind out. Great for everyday wear too. Only downside is the jacket isn't windproof, but it isn't supposed to be.
Sizing was pretty accurate. A Small fit me well and I'm 5'6" and a little under 140.

Warm and comfy so it serves the purpose, plus my Fiance got it for me, that's the only reason it gets four stars from me, otherwise it would get three. I like the fleece, I asked her for it actually, but I should have known, TNF is just not high quality anymore. The "fuzz" that has come off of this jacket seems a bit excessive for how long I have owned it and how much I have washed it (I got it for Christmas 2010). The tags itch so I cut 'em out. Also, none of the materials seem to be of good quality, after a wash or two everything was pilling and not nearly as fresh looking.
The previous review mentioned that this is recycled plastic which helps me like it a lot more. Polartec Pro Fleece is my personal favorite but it is a little bit more pricey and, from what I know, is NOT of post consumer plastic. The current price of this fleece is a great deal, I may even pick one up if this still stands come cold weather again. The original price of $100 is not insane but a bit more shopping may offer higher quality results.
p.s.-please get a color other than black if you can bear to do so, you will be much happier for it :)
Man is this thing warm... about 10C out today, and was boiling in it with just a shirt underneath. Seems to keep wind out OK, but havent had any really strong winds yet.
It's not fancy, no extra pockets, no extra padding or different types of material, but it's a good fleece. It layers well, and at 5'10" 170 lbs I could fit a thin layer underneath it (size M) quite comfortably.
I wouldnt pay retail for it, as I think it's too "bare-bones" to pay 100$ for... but that's what backcountry.com is for right?
This is a nice middle weight fleece. The fleece is super soft and warm. The jacket is well made. It has a relax fit so it is pretty comfortable to wear. This jacket is compatible with THe North Face 3 in 1 jacket.
My son is 6'3 and 180lbs. He normally wears a XL,but it sounds like he should go down a size because it would fit a little bit closer. He had one(I never asked the size)but it was stolen. I would like to replace it. He loved it!
Your son will be just fine with the Large one. I'm 6'3" and 220 pounds and the fleece work wonders. This fleece is light and yet keep you warm on certain conditions. In my case I use it as a buffer between my thin layers and my extreme cold jacket (Free Thinker Jacket). Bottom line, good price, elegant and practical. I'm very happy with my choice.
The jacket runs large, at least one size. Also, the fabric is soft and lofty but also 'unstructured', meaning it looks sloppy or very broken-in. I prefer a tougher, more technical fleece so this didn't work for me.
I usually stay away from TNF because all their sizes are really wide for a person who is tall and slim (like me). Is this true with this as well or does it have a more athletic cut? Thanks.
I'm searching for a warm and long (very important for me) fleece to use under a jacket for skying with cold weather. Which one would be better (longer) between the Denali Wind Pro, Pamir and Pumori for my expectetions ? Thanks
this jacket rocks! i wear it most of the spring and fall in the north east. and it looks so good that i will wear it to work in the winter as a 'shirt'. not very good on a windy day, but anything else and it is perfect. i would say it is at it's best in the 35-55 degree days.
Hi James - The main difference is that the Pumori is Polartec fleece, while the Khumbu is made from a proprietary North Face fleece. They are similar in terms of performance. Hope this helps
This fleece is very light weight, comfortable and warm. It's good for hiking when worn with several layers of clothing. However, if I you just want something to wear around town without several layers of clothing, I would suggest something a bit heavier.
I love this jacket! I purchased it as a gift for my son and used it one day to run out for a minute and I did not want to give it back! I am buying one for myself! Very warm, light weight and comfortable!
I just received two identical Khumbu jackets for Christmas and was researching to see about exchanging one for something a little different. The one's I got are both black XL (women's) and I thought about getting a men's because there are more colors to choose from. I have tried on a men's L Khumbu and it is a little big. The women's xl fits perfectly so I would like to figure out if a men's medium would fit.
The jacket is warmer than some other fleece jackets I have. It is very well designed and exactly what I expected. Ordering was easy and delivery was as what I expected. Prior to my placing the order, I was surprised to see the large choice of styles and colors at Backcountry.com. Where I live ( the Mount Washington Valley in northern N.H.) the choices seem much more restricted. I was very pleased with Backcountry.com.
I have worn this several times now.. love it. It has a great quality feel, zippers, etc.. I have a closet full of fleece type jackets in just about every brand you can think of.. and if anyone grabs one to borrow.. they always grab this one.. Ive had to steal it back from several friends and family.. Only one small complaint.. the sleeves are a little long.. but the body and length are spot on. I ordered the large, because I wear a large in almost eveything. Im 6ft and 180ish.. and sleeves could be couple inches shorter.. but other than that.. love it.. and for the record.. backcountry is FREAKIN AWESOME!!
I'm taking a trip to patagonia soon and need a mid or expedition weight fleece that can be layered. I'm a bit over 5'6 about 140 lbs and was looking at either this or the Khumbu fleece. I am leaning towards the Pumori, but it needs to fit over 2 layers (zip-T and lighter baselayer) and under a Marmot hard shell. My sizing says I should be on the small end of medium, but do these run big?
I would say that TNF fleece runs a little on the big side. I think the small will work fine for you, and you will still have room for layers. Hope this helps
I bought this fleece in a discontinued color, so in other words on-sale. I think the color taupe is great, and better than I expected, I would say it is green and not gray as another reviewer stated. I bought this coat for the purpose of a light jacket in the evenings with temperatures in the 50's. I like it a lot. I am a bit over 6 foot and just under 200lbs and a large is very roomy, and a good fit.
Zips in perfectly to same-sized TNF shell to form a very warm coat. Only complaint is when zipped together there is no zip-able inner pocket (the fleece jacket has two deep but open inside pockets).
I'll start this review and share that I received the coat for Christmas '09 so I can't offer up the type of review I like to read about the wear and tear and durability of outer gear...not simply...it looks nice and feels good...which it does.
With that being said, after much research this jacket was purchased because its made from polartec materials which I love. This jacket is replacing a 12 year old Columbia polartec that finally bit the bullet after being used as a layer on many daily freezing cycling, running and hiking excursions.
Things I like about this jacket include,,,,warm, but not overly bulky, zip down side pockets to open, elastic draw string pulls on both sides of coat and the inch of fabric that extends past the zipper to ensure no wind blows through zipper.
I'll leave a another post in a couple of years after its been used a bit.
have had 2 of these coats over 3 years. Absolutely love the fit, feel, and utility. this under a light raincoat makes a winter coat for me (from Alaska). looks great on a slim build, something hard to find any more.
I love this midweight fleece jacket! Soooo comfortable and functional. Mine has been with me all over California, Baja Mexico, and about 6 countries in Europe. I have actually had mine for 4 years now, and wear it ALL THE TIME. It still looks great, but maybe a little aged/faded - as to be expected. I am actually going to buy a new one today!
Doesn't it feel good to used recycled plastic to keep yourself warm, it sure does to me. The 200 fleece weight is perfect for layering in the colder more...
Wore this jacket on a 3 day hike. Temperatures down to the 30s at night and I was warm enough with this, an Icebreaker 200 long sleeve shirt, and a rain more...
