Hunker down with the ultimate warmth of your North Face Prism Optimus Down Jacket and laugh in the face of Old Man Winter's brutal onslaught. Whether you're mid-belay or hanging out at the summit, 700-fill down insulation fights off the cold while 30D nylon toughs out the alpine environment around you. The mountains are going to have to work a little harder if they want to send you home in a shivering mess.

  • 700-Fill down offers excellent loft, good rebound from compression, and a warmth-to-weight ratio that surpasses any synthetic insulating material
  • 30D Nylon shell fabric with DWR treatment helps repel water and maintain necessary breathability for the down insulation
  • Fully welded baffles trap heat to keep you warm in even the harshest cold, while hemline cinch cord and elastic-bound cuffs help completely seal out remaining cold and wind
  • Harness-friendly pockets allow for layering and warmth even when you’re clad in climbing gear
  • Compresses into it's own pocket taking up minimal pack space
  • Summit Series design means it’s made for athletic pursuits in harsh environments

Bottom Line: More down for your high-ascent ups.

Depends what you mean by climbing with it. Do you mean wearing it while climbing? If you're going hard, both will be way too much. If you mean a jacket to put on when you stop, the Prism Optimus is the better choice. Quite a bit lighter and more packable. That said, something like Marmot's Ama Dablam jacket would be a better choice, as it'll give you about the same amount of warmth for a lot less weight in a much smaller package.

Does the North Face Prism Optimus Down Jacket have a helmet-compatible hood?

After some investigation, and chatting with Backcountry folks, I've learned that this jacket does have a climbing helmet compatible hood, but not so good with ski helmets. But, depending on the helmet and headsize, things could work out differently. You can always work with Backcountry and perhaps return if you are not satisfied with the hood. Just a thought, and worth exploring, since this is a nice piece. Hope this helps.
