One way to make your gear greener is to carefully select versatile pieces like The North Face Women’s Perilune Jacket. This jacket provides double-duty protection thanks to full zip-in compatibility. Wear it alone for waterproof breathable protection from rain, zip in a light fleece when it starts getting colder, and swap that out for a puffy jacket for sub-zero weather on the mountain.
HyVent triple-layer technology blocks rain and snow while allowing water vapor to escape so you stay dry
Underarm zips give you ventilation options on warmer days
Fully taped seams so you’re not leaking at the seams
Hook-and-loop adjustable cuffs and hem cinch cord keep out drafts
How exactly do you zip a TNF fleece into this jacket? I ordered one a couple months ago and am happy with it as a rain/wind jacket, but haven't figured out how to zip a fleece into it.. Today I was in an outdoors store checking out the Khumbu fleece, Denali, etc., and a sales manager said any TNF shell would need to have two sets of zippers in order for a fleece to zip in. But the Perilune obviously has just one set of zippers. Help?
After researching and trying on the 3-in-1 jackets offered by northface, I was disappointed by the this hoods that provided no warmth and the fact that the inner jackets didn't have hoods. I decided to make my own. I went with a hooded Denali jacket and started my search for an adequate shell. I live in Colorado and travel to New Jersey so I encounter all sorts of winter weather. After some very helpful online assistance from a backcountry rep, I chose the perilune. The hood provides wind and water protection and fits perfectly over the cozy Denali hood. The jackets zip together and apart very easily which is a must in CO as one day is snowy and freezing and the next could be 60 degrees and sunny. The perilune has vents under the arms and will serve well as a rain jacket as well. I feel I can use this coat every season. I have a smaller frame (5'7, size 4) but got a medium in both. This fits a little loosely but allows for layering without looking too bulky or shapeless. I am very happy with this combo!

My daughter loves her North Face Perilune. Right now, she uses it as a shell with the Denali (we live in Buffalo, NY) and says it keeps her extremely warm. She loves that it's essentially wind and water proof too for long walks on her college campus! My one BIG suggestion if you're using this with items that "attach" into it is to buy this a size bigger than your Denali. A small Perilune was too small to fit comfortably over a small Denali.
is this jacket more like the "rain coat" style or does it have the effect of the softshell? Is it insulated at all? Im really looking for a jacket thats light but still has some insulation to it.
Unfortunately, HyVent is just a shell ("rain coat style"). No insulation on this one, although it will accept zip-in liners like a Denali or other TNF fleeces that are compatible. All-in-one options are pretty limited. See if some of TNF's Tri-Climate jackets might give you more of what you're looking for.
Bought this for my gf in green. She loves the green but just FYI the strip that covers the left/right pocket zippers are white. The current photo above is tricky as it blends in with the background. Also the green one we got is NOT two tone as the other jackets (a good thing)
Haven't tested it in rain yet. but doesn't feel insanely waterproof. But we shall see.
Got an XS fits her perfectly (she says, if she wears a sweater underneath. 5' 5", 127lbs. Athletiic type body.
I can't say regarding this jacket in particular, but it should work. Personally, with shells and insulation layers in general, I prefer to go a size up with the shell. HOWEVER, as puffy's are so... puffy, they will compact quite a bit before inhibiting your mobility, and this shell is listed as a "regular" fit and is designed for layering, so it should have plenty of room. Therefor, I'd go with the size you'd normally wear and if it doesn't work, send it back for a different size or try a different shell altogether. BC.com is really good about returns and exchanges. =)
Hi! I want to buy a jacket for my daughter and we live in Minnesota. The weather gets very col, single digits sometimes. Would this jacket be good for my daughter or would it get too cold? Would I have to buy a fleece jacket to attach to this? or would a regular sweatshirt be fine? Please reply asap!
I read the previous review before ordering this jacket. Some of them said that it run small. I am 5'2" and 110 pounds. I usually wear a small or X-small. I got an XS. IT fits well. I can use it as a shell with the Denali(XS) and Khumba(XS) .
Hi! I want to buy this for my daughter but what size should I get? She is a very skinny girl and I don't want this jacket to look baggy and big on her, since she hates poofy coats. She is 12 years old. Also, she SOMETIMES wear sweatshirts underneath. Would I have to buy a fleece jacket to go with this? (We live in Minnesota)
First off, I won't say the jacket is bad, haven't really put it to test yet. I am assuming that it should do what its supposed to do. The only problem is I am in two minds about keeping it!! I am 5.5 125 pounds, usually wear a small. I ordered the Medium listening to the previous reviews, about it being snug. However when I tried mine on a few minutes ago, it looks really weird on me. The arms are tooo long, overall looks SO loose on me, the cap is too big, even when I adjust it by the draw-cords, it gets to a point where it interferes with my line of vision. :(
Really wanted to love this jacket. I ordered it for a hiking vacation trip to British Columbia, leaving for it next week. If I send for an exchange, unless I shell out the money for expedited shipping, I am pretty sure I wont receive it on time. What a bummer!
PS: This is lined, and seems like a very good quality jacket though.
I got this jacket to accompany the Lily Thermal Jacket as it wasn't warm enough for the winter winds here in Iowa. The Lily Jacket is stated to be just a snap in jacket, however it zipped into this shell just fine! There is extra zipper track at the neck of the Perilune Jacket as the Lily doesn't fit exactly right but you can't tell and if someone does it doesn't look weird. The fit of the Perilune is great, it's a little bit fitted but yet very comfy!
Bought this jacket for my daughter, but am exchanging it. Nice jacket to wear alone, or as an outer layer, but I think it runs quite small. It fit like a petite small rather than a regular small. I'd order a size up, particularly if you plan to layer under it. Looking forward to receiving the medium and hope it fits.
I'm not sure what you mean by adjust, there are cords on each side of the face that you can use to tighten the hood but I don't think it would adjust the way you are looking for. It could probably still hang over the face.. I can post a pic if you'd like.

Denise, The Denali Fleece will layer well under the Perilune. The Denali is zip-in compatable with this shell, to create a very warm & waterproof/windproof combination.
Love the color, love the fit, I also found the zip in liner, unfortunately Backcountry did not have it, but I found it in teh denim blue and it is even more versatile.
hello! i got this jacket for my daughter and she loved it! thr bad part is she is SUPER skinny and the small jacket was big on her. It woupd be good to have a fleece jacket to zip in if u live in the colder parts like minnesota. Otherwise, its a great shell!
if i was going to order a medium in the northface venture jacket do you suggest i order a medium in the perilune one as well or should i go up a size, as i read it runs small
Perilune Jkt . Venture Jkt (differences separated by the period " . " )
Back length : 27" . 26" Weight : 23.9 oz . 12 oz Waterproofing technology : HyVent 2L . HyVent DT Core venting : none . pit-zips Zip-in compatibility : yes . no Pockets : 2 . 2 (mesh-lined as additional venting) (both jackets' hoods are permanently fixed, both with 3-point adjustment toggles) (both having hook-and-loop velcro cuffs) (both are standard fit)
What this all means is that the Perilune is designed primarily as a waterproof shell (HyVent 2L or 2-layered) with a zip-in compatibility and is thus more of a cold-weather jacket where you can zip-in fleeces for added warmth, like the North Face's Tri-climate series. A Zip-in compatible shell has another line of zip teeth so that compatible fleeces can be attached. But a Perilune falls short of a full-featured skiing jacket like the Varius Guide which comes with the other stuff like wind-skirt, and additional pockets (normally for goggles, etc.).
The Venture jacket is strictly more of a waterproof rain jacket in terms of its design. However, it can always be used as a shell. But that being said there are no zip-in compatibility on this. Its also much lighter, shorter (1" shorter and that helps in movement) and with pit-zips can be used for tropical conditions. The different HyVent technology used here (HyVent DT or Dry Touch) is always prevalent in the North Face's lighter jackets where weight is a consideration (eg. running jackets).
In my opinion the Perilune is thus a more heavy-duty jacket whilst the Venture is a lighter one (although it can still function as a shell). That's why the price is also reflective of this, with the Perilune being more expensive (retailed originally at $149 versus the Venture at $99).
So now the question is what purpose/function you require the jacket to fulfill and then purchase accordingly.
Hope this helps.
(Note : Based on North Face's website, the Perilune actually doesn't have any pit zips, and is a HyVent 2L and not 3L technology jacket. 3L or 3 layered HyVent jackets come at a higher pricing.)
