The North Face's Paramount Convertible Pants have legs that zip off at mid-thigh to make shorts. They're water-repellent and quick drying, making them perfect for your trek on the Inca Trail, your visit to Sri Lanka during monsoon season, or anywhere rain may threaten. Incredibly durable, the Paramount Convertibles have double needle stitching and bartacks throughout—and they're still lightweight! Plenty of pockets, including two right side utility and two cargo, are waiting to be stuffed with your compass, an energy bar, keys, whatever!
Bottom Line: Travel wisely and pack light—get the Paramount Convertible Pant-Short and kill two birds with one stone.
The three pairs of Paramounts I bought are still going strong. The waterproofing needs to be redone, but they still make killer backpacking gear. Side thigh pocket is perfect for todays smartphones, the ankle zips mean you don't have to remove your boots, and the minimalist belt works under pack waist straps. The front cargo pockets are oddly placed, since anything you put in there wacks you on the thigh repeatedly while you walk. Other than that.. great pair of pants to add to your gear stable.
As suggested by others, the north face seems to have changed these pants for the worse! I have about 5 older pairs of these that are the same size as the two additional pair I just purchased and these new ones don't fit me well. I may need to go from M-reg to L-short because these just don't seem to fit as well. I was planning to buy these pants until end of time but it's time to shop around. The north face moved these from the Phillipines to Bangladesh and they are not the same as they used to be. Lower zipper quality in the legs from what I can tell as well. I wonder what the profit margin is on a $65 pant made in the Phillipines vs. on made in Bangladesh????
As the center of gear knowledge, Backcountry.com wants you to be as informed as possible when buying high-end gear, and we've compiled price listings from some other reputable retailers for you to compare. Although we take steps to confirm this information is accurate and updated, we assume no responsibility for the accuracy of the price and shipping information provided by other vendors.
I bought this last December to travel through the jungle in Mexico, Guatemala and Belize. The FIRST day I tried on I made a hole in on of the side pockets. The assembly is: SHITTY. You can't beat this gear too much otherwise you'll see the damage really soon. It barely made it through some rough trip on the lacandona jungle. I had to sew it myself but the MADE IN BANGLADESH really sucks... the hangers that are on the belt were almost destroyed at the end.. very poor construction. On the other hand the technology was really helpful those things dried all sorts of fast. Lot's of pockets were really helpful during the trip. The sippers are great very good ones. I really liked the "concealed one" by the right side pocket.
If you use it as I saw most SENIOR US peepz on the streets of Chiapas and Guatemala to stroll on the markets well you look great but if you are using them for what they are worth... you'll find they're not only expensive.. they're not up to the standards of this company.
Some others have mentioned this as well, but I have to HAVE to second what others are saying. North Face has redesigned and complete messed up these pants. I have a total of 6 pairs of these pants. My first 3 are virtually indestructable. They have held up to sliding across slickrock and busting through scrub oak and brush with no problems. So, the earlier reviews touting how great they are used to be correct. However, I recently purchased 3 new pair of these when Backcountry had them on sale. 2 of them have had the zipper fail the first 2 or 3 times I wore them. And, I have had to have seams re-stitched on all 3 pair. Also, it is painfully obvious that the material is inferior to the earlier models.
So, just because you have bought some in the past, do not assume you will get the same pair of pants if you order new ones.
Hard-wearing fabric, great number and depth of pockets. Even you will make your pants dirty with mud- you will look COOL with The North Face Paramount Convertible Pant. Look at my photo
The original model of this pant is the best! I tried the newer, fancier redesigned version and it does not fit the same, the fabric feels slightly different and some useful features are missing. I was lucky to find the old model here and bought a couple up. Super tough (I even had about 3 deer gum and chew them all night to get the salt out, lucky I found my pants in the morning) without a tear! Zip works solid. Pockets are very well placed and usable. Cool when you need them to be, warm when you need them to be. There could be a few minor improvements, sadly the "new" model misses the mark. If you want something that looks a little more fashionable, go for the new ones. If you want tough and useful, go for this older model before they are all gone!
i really don't like these pants. i got them because they came in a long length (i'm tall, 6'5" and relatively slim at 174 pounds). i got them for my long and routine hikes. they have lots of downsides, for me. first and foremost is the fit: if you have a trim, athletic build, i think you'll find that these pants are super baggy. i got the medium-tall. the waist fits fine, but there is so much excess material around pretty much all parts of the leg. even the leg opening is too wide for a hiking pant. secondly, the material is very heavy. as you walk in them, they just don't stride well at all. the combination of the weight and the excessive bagginess just doesn't work for me. they don't look flattering at all. thirdly, one of the belt loops broke.
the Arcteryx Rampart or Columbia Sportswear Powers Vertical II, both available in a long length (though the latter of which backcountry doesn't seem to carry), are much better pants for hiking. my favorite is the former of those two.
Have a pair of these already. The size says they are XL/TG. Is that XL Long? I can't remember what the sales tag said. Sizing chart says L/R but would like to be sure. 6' 225# with b/n 34/35" waist, 33" inseam.
These pants are great for hiking, camping, travel, and just hanging around. For hiking, camping, and travel, they have plenty of pockets to put all your stuff. The cargo pockets can get a bit annoying since they are right on the front of your thigh, but I found it is a good poclet for papers, passports, etc. The zipper pocket on the side is great for keysand other things of value. Waistband is very comfortable, and if you get hot, just unzip the legs off.
I would consider these a mid-weight pant. They do take a little longer to dry than other lightweight pants, but they also provide a little more warmth if it's chillly.
I find these pants run true to size- I wear a Medium/Regular in these pants and a 32x30 in jeans. Hope that helps with the sizing.
I bought these without trying them on I wear a 36X34, I should have bought the reglar length eventhough they are rated as a 32 length. The Long are more of a 35 or 36 inch length. This is not a problem when I wear boots as it gives me more length. It is a problem when I wear sandals around camp after a long day of treking. Fabric is good Like most things they are not made in the USA but what the heck is? The north face is awesome they stand behind their stuff. Check with people with negative reviews to see how many actually sent them back to get a refund or have them fixed. Im an outdoor nut and Ive hand Northface pants for 10 years, even before the north face was popular. Good product I just hate the sizing. I am not found of the belt system in the pants as I cannot carry a gun with me as they are not compatable with a holster. Not all that bad just have to find an alternative way to carry when I have to.
I got my pair in from Backcountry.com and was concerned with all the negative reviews. but the pants seem just fine to me after a wear around today outdoors. I am a 31/30 and the medium/short fits perfectly. The inseam is just like any other 30 length inseam I've had to deal with on jeans and pants. What can I say, I'm 5'7". I was afraid they would be too long as many have complained but they are fine for my shorter legs with hiking boots on.I checked out the seams to see what people wer complaining about and found them to be fine quality, especially compared to cheaper, dirtier same types of pants. These are great for hiking, backpacking but they don't seem durable enough for sliding on rocks and glisading down a hill or mountain. I think the material could take it but the seams in the seat could strain and wear. I like the snaplock belt buckle, the zippers are fine. The pair I got were also made in Bangladesh but again happy with TNF overall quality. The material is great! Thicker material compared to others convertible pants made for fishing and wet conditions. Wish I could find a couple more my size at the discontinued sale price I got mine for! I thought about wearing thermals and negative fleece underneath and it would be a tight fit unless the fleece is super thin.
Yes, I thought the medium/short would be too loose in the waist but they fit perfectly. The elastic band and the belt help quite a bit. I usually wear small upper wear of TNF but medium fit me well for this pair of pants. I can see how they might be tight in the thigh they aren't loose/relaxed either like the cheaper ones by alpine designs which has looser and much more flowing fabric but thinner.
I wear a 31x30 pant as well. Just got these in a small/short and found the waist size to be perfect but they seem to be pretty tight in the thigh area. Concerned that the medium/short would be too big in the waist. Yours fit well?
I have a 33-34 inseam and the M/long fit me well. It has elastic on the sides, which I didn't like at first, but they are really comfortable. I'll accept looking like an old man to gain some comfort. These are my favorite pants so far.
Write your question here...I want to get my dad these pants. He is 5'11" and says he wears 35-36/32 pant. I told him the medium waist size and he said it would be too tight and that the large would be too big, based on your size chart. help!!
These pants are the cats pajamas! Really comfortable and durable. They dry fast too. I use them for sailing, hiking, and just everyday hanging out. Several times I've stripped them down to the shorts and just jumped in to go swimming cuz they dry nice and fast. Another Awesome thing from The North Face!
I bought a pair of these from REI in 2007...Had to buy another. Durable fabric, many pockets, and you can make them into shorts. Big package; small price!!!
Tired them on and they are huge...size changed from the 07-08 model
Like the look, but the pocket layout on these are horrible. Fit was good, material seems decent. But technically, the pockets are horrible, wont use them the way they are located on the front of the thigh (cargo and side pocket), stuff falls down to knee level and gets super bunched up, have to reach in to damn near your elbow.
I have tried many and these are the best. The zip pocket is perfect for you key or other very important things. I will probebly buy the new design version.
I can't seem to find any decent, roomy convertible zip-off pants in a 36" inseam. All my searches seem to end up here, with TNF Paramount. Any other ideas out there? These only come in 35" and mine always shrink a little and end up being just a little too short. A solid 35" would be fine if it did not shrink. Thanks!
These really shouldn't shrink. Do you put them in the dryer? My synthetics dry so fast when I hang them that I never use the dryer. It extends the life the fabric, and you won't have to worry about any shrinking.
Love the fabric and the pockets. The shorts inseam is about right. They dry fast. After a couple of years the zips are holding up. The center seam is coming apart. I will repair this myself to get some more mileage out of them. I have tried some other zip offs but did not like them as much as these. Would probably buy again at some point.
These WILL shrink if left in the dryer, folks. They fit a little big even after shrinking. I'm 6' 185lbs and I got a Reg L, and they are baggy. I have to cinch the belt tight or I'm constantly pulling them up. Other than the fit, they are nice pants.
Good fit, Small reg was a bit long but nothing unmanageable. Fit at waist and through leg was good. I'm 5'11" and about 150. Great pant for backpacking and a bit of climbing. No complaints yet.
Fabric had no trouble repelling light rain, and keeping me dry. Includes a internal belt, tons of pockets. Pricy, but it has a lifetime from TNF and B.C. Check em out! They are worth it.
Despite the mixed reviews I decided to get them still. Well they are ridiculously baggy. I didn't expect them to be slim, which is what I prefer and yet to find any convertibles like this? I returned them!!

I bought these pants several months ago and I absolutely LOVE them. The material is tough but comfortable. They don't pack quite a small as my other North Face pants (The North Face Horizon convertable pants), But they are thicker than my other ones. I love the built-in belt, which saves weight and space by not having to carry a separate belt. It does still have durable belt loops, which allows you to hang stuff from your waist. The pockets are well designed to handle all your carry-ons. The zip off leg are a great too. These pants are wonderful, and I would recommend them to anyone.
They look nice, and pack very easy. I only use them for backpacking and they tend to be a little snug in the front (especially around the quads) which makes for uncomfortable hiking when you stride forward and for sitting. The seams are also weak and wear out quickly. The quality of the paramount pants seems to have dipped. I would recommend the Columbia Silver Ridge II over the TNF Paramount.
I like these pants! Since I'm a husky kinda guy, I appreciate the roominess of cut of the pant. I'm only taking these pants to Australia (I did buy 3 pairs!) as I like the idea of being able to adjust to the changing environmental situations that may arise. I like the fact that the belt is built in and I don't have to muck around trying to find a belt that works with this style of pant. I'm also impressed with how quick they dry which is an added benefit since they don't do dryers in Australia - at least where I'm going - no real need!
these convertibles are great for hot to cool weather hiking. several deep pockets are very useful. my problem with these pants is the stitching, its poorly done. i used these pants while hiking up a big hill with lots of loose/small rocks, and while decending i spent much of my time on my backside with my hands and feet to balance. the stitching on the back came loose after one use. great for most occasions but not good on tough backcountry.
Great for any outdoor summer activity, including the Inca trail. Found them for half price on a different website and ordered 3 pair of the beige. Can't live without them.
I wear the same size and the med Long fit perfect. It is harder to find all the colors in that size or to find them on sale but they are worth the trouble and full price.kf
I have owned at least 10 pairs of these pants in various colors. I use them for hiking, backpacking, camping, fishing, etc. They are without a doubt my favorite all around pants. From the deserts of California to Mt Whitney, and from the jungles to the volcanos of Central America, these pant can take it and bounce back for more. If you lead an active life style, these pants won't let you down.
Pros:Sturdy water resistant material, deep pockets, built-in belt, elastic waistband with metal snap fastener instead of a button. Con: Inseam much longer than usual. I wear 34" length pants and so I ordered the long length as recommended. They bunched up and fell below my heels. I returned them and got the regular length and they fit much better.
These are great pants for hot weather, with or without the convertable option. Very flexable fit which is very important in my line of work. Home Health Physical Therapy. If you are a regular size guy the med with normal length is perfect. There is enough leg length to fit from 5'10 to 6' and still wear stylish.
I bought these pants about 6 months ago and recently bought them again to give them another try in the hopes that the first pair was just defective.
The stitching on these pants truly suck. The crotch area stitching is easy to come apart. Carry a sewing kit with you in case you need to stitch it up during a climb/hike. Even when you get them new and inspect it, the sewing doesn't give you much confidence. It looks like it's about to fall apart.
The design of these pants need a lot of improvement. I am 5'8", 33" waist and wear medium short. Even short, is not that short. The bottom can drag the floor if you don't pull the pants high enough. Regular is even longer. The pants have very baggy legs. Since the leg cuffs don't have cinches, it is easy to kick dirt into that large baggy opening.
The manufacturing process of these pants suck too. The DWR on these pants is just bad. I rinsed these pants out after my first use, and it seems that the DWR has already worn down - the water doesn't bead as much anymore and starts to soak into the pants. This is especially true by the butt area where I sit.
In conclusion, the North Face Paramount pants are inferior products. It's no wonder why so many people think that North Face offers the crappiest outdoor gear especially for the price. The North Face is now known to be somewhat of a fashion icon to the rest of the world, and as a result, doesn't seem to focus on what the company initially stood for.
For the price of these pants, you should go with the Mountain Hardwear Mesa pants instead. I have those and they are MUCH more dependable, better built, AND lightweight.
Great overall pants, ideal for hiking or just hanging around. They dry in no time flat and are very comfortable. There is plenty of room in the legs to allow for gear in pockets, breathability, and hidden leg strappings (knives etc...). The zippers are quick to come off when the going gets hot, and almost as fast to zip back on when terrain or weather changes. Pockets are large enough to stow most anything, and with the handy loops on the waist you can add a knife, light, compass, phone, or whatever you see fit. Great versatility with these pants, a must have for the avid camper/hiker/outdoorsman or just awesome pants in general if you don't demand performance on a daily basis you'll always have them if you need them. If there was a 10 star rating these would be worthy of such a distinction.
As most have stated below, this is a solid pair of pants. I have worn them all over the world and have never been dissapointed. They dry really quickly and never seem to wear out. Mine have been to the top of mountains all over the cascades and rockies, and to the desert of Iraq and Somalia. I will buy these pants as long as TNF makes them. Although I will say that I've never zipped the legs off. never really found the need...
Bought these for my husband a couple of yrs ago, then another pair this year..He loves them!! They are good for hiking, biking or whatever. The zip-offs are nice in the summer and are a good, quality fit and material.
I typically wear a 36 waiste 32 inseam pants. I purchased the LARGE size. They were way to long, and had to get them hemmed. Not to big a deal though. I love these pants, I have had them for about 3 years. I purchased a second pair after the first year b/c I was afraid they may quit making them. I have worn them multiple times per week over 3 years and they are still holding up and looking great. In the summer I usually only wear the shorts, and if you wash the shorts to much w/o washing the bottoms, the color can become slightly mismatched, now I wash both most every time, and the discoloration has quit being an issue.
I frequent the hills and have found that I cannot take more than 5 steps without having to pull these out of my butt crack, ouch! These are not what they used to be and I would only recommend these to adventurers who need a secure fit around the meat and two veg. Basically just an expensive wedgie machine.
These are some good pants. I typically do not purchase NF stuff but needed a quick solution for a 7-day jaunt into the wilderness (the NF logo is low-profile so nobody knows anyway). Hated to pay this much, too. But these guys are worth every penny. I cut the integrated belt out and removed some unnecessary tags, loops, et al. and now they are my one pair of bottoms for packing or even any kind of travel. Don't even need a back-up pair. I have slid over boulders, bushwhacked thru thorn-fields and just abused the crap out of these and the most damage was caused getting the pant leg caught in my bicycle chain just riding down the street. Drying time was a little more than expected but not intolerable. Hate to do it but I highly recommend; these are an investment.
bought these pants for their weight, durability, convertibility and over all quick access to ALOT of handy and useful items when on a trail. Haven't gotten to test them on a 'trail' yet, however, I bought these pants based on reviews here and other sites all over....I got these pants 3 days ago and prayed for hell and thunder, lol, and that's what I got was God's Kentucky fury with wind gusts of up to 60mph when I set out on my 3 miles hike....
All I can say is this...will be the PERFECT pair of pants for my AT hike next year and I gotta get another pair...
CON Buyer beware! I'm 5'7" and am 32" waist with a 31" length. I bought the medium sized regulars and they are about 4" TOO long (others complain bout sizes and fit obviously), I am fortunate enough to know a great seamstress who can easily remedy my problem. SO, if you're about a 33-34" waist you truly ought to try the medium regulars...just sayin...mine are WAY too long (tuckin em in boots and that's not kewl!). Also even with the waist strap cinched up on the pants they are still slightly too baggy in the hips. I refuse a belt cuz I'm goin lite on the trail....hell, a string would work, lol!!!!
BUT PERFECT PANTS THAT CAN BE MADE A PERFECT FIT!!!!!!!!!
I bought these for my husband who is perpetually complaining about the fit of other hiking pants that he owns -- the synthetic ones from REI balloon up and look ridiculous. But the Paramount Convertible is just right! It is also extremely light-weight, water repellant (my husband didn't once have to put on his rain pants during the fair amount of rain that we saw on our Patagonia trip), breathable and quick-dry. I think I am going to buy him another pair.
these are great pants for hiking and for everyday use. the size pant you want is the Large/Reg for a 36" waist, 32" inseam. the only issue i've ever had with the pants is some bunching when taking exaggerated steps, hiking vertically/rock scrambling. the fitting is casual/comfortable, not excessively baggy like a pair of REI paints that are super baggy that i wear in the heat of Summer that allow a freer range of motion. well worth the $ for these pants. i had to have the seat of one pair re-stitched after about 3 years of use as the material wore thin in that area but otherwise those pants are still in perfect shape.
I agree with some of the other posts about the change to Bangladesh - the older pants were great but the new ones are falling apart. I've got two pair I got a year ago and the seams for the seat are falling apart.
An older pair is holding up just fine.
I'm willing to try one more time to see if maybe The NorthFace has done something to improve quality at their new plants, but be aware that the quality has definately suffered.
I own two pair of these babies and can't imagine life without them. Just got back from hiking in the rain forest of southern Costa Rica. Ample room for storage, don't get the belt buckle bind when wearing a harness and dry super fast even in heavy humidity (as well as can be expected). I did dry them in the clothes dryer once after I first got them and won't make that mistake again. They still fit great but it is because they are sized a bit long.
Yes its true, the old version of these pants is much better than the current one. I have two pairs and i like the old pair much better. At first glance, they look similar but if you try them on, you can definitely tell there is a difference. The fit is different in that the old ones feel much more relaxed, especially if you're just wearing the shorts. I have the medium short version of the pants and it looks like North face shortened the length of the shorts. The shorts on the newer pair are way too short and feel a lot tighter than on the old one. Sewing is better on the old ones as well. Both pants had stitching fail but the old pair took around two years for that to happen and the new pair only took about 6 months. Thank goodness north face repairs for free. These used to be the pant I would recommend to people but now Ive had to change that. The old north faces are still my favorite hiking pants but since theyve changed the Paramount, I've had to start looking for some new ones to get. If you buy one, hopefully you'll like them. Three stars because i love the old ones.
Thats about it, thought they were great pants, bought three pairs and they all fell apart around the same time. Basically some bad stitching in the rear end and poor customer service from TNF. Oh well you decide but I have never had problems with any of their gear before. Its a bummer because I really liked these pants. They are made in Bangladesh of all places and I hope there are giving those workers a fair salary but somehow I doubt it but I can not say for sure. Good luck shopping. Peace
I may have the older version, but they work great! The main objection I have is how short the shorts are, but in the end it may be for the best because it doesnt limit range of motion.
The pockets are super deep (go to the hem of the shorts) for storing maps or whatever w/o anything falling out. The wind, water, + abrasion resistance is pretty solid as well. Just be careful around fires because sparks can have their way w/ this material pretty quickly.
I really like the material and fit. I have the size Large Short, I'm 5'9" 190, 34" waist and they are perfect. As said earlier the stiching is a weak point, the butt area on mine need some needle and thread love after maybe 30 days of hiking use over the last 9 months. I was rough on them so I'm not upset. Also the "short" size option is accomplished by reducing the length of the short and not the removable lower leg section, so conversion of the "short" size pant to shorts will result in daisy dukes, hot pants, or booty shorts...keep this in mind if you require the short size.
I, like others who have reviewed, The North Face Paramount Convertible Pant, have found that they do not fit properly and are extremely uncomfortable. I have purchased two other pair in the past years but this new model really fit poorly and are way too baggy for any trekking. I work in the Himalayas but I can assure you these pants will not be in my suitcase or in my backpack. Unfortunately, I bought two pairs and now I have to go to the process of returning them. What a pain!
These pants are great for Summer. Lightweight, comfortable, stylish, versatile, water resistant, and lots of pockets. Gotta love the zip off legs too. I would highly recommend these to anyone looking for a break from their Carhartts like I usually am when Spring rolls around. Get a few pair, you won't be dissapointed.
I have 2 pairs of these pants. I love the pocket on the right thigh..great for a compass, flashlight or similar object. I was disappointed when the butt of one pair split after a 100 yard glissade when descending a 14er in CO. I plan to sew them up and see how much more abuse they will take.
These pants are extremely comfortable and versatile. I bought my first pair about two months ago and recently ordered another pair. These pants are very quick to dry and store well in a pack or suitcase. My only issue with these pants is the seat can be a little confiding when sitting down. These pants are terrific for hiking and repel ripping against thorns and brush.
Cost was in line but maybe that was because these pants just aren't that great.
Wore them three days in the Colorado wilderness, the crotch area is too tight... the zip off pants are too short, and they don't dry as fast as advertised.
I read the poor reports but still bought the pants because of the name...they performed adequetly but next time I will buy from a retailer for this valuable piece of gear.
Material Dries fast. The fit is spot on, quite flattering but still very casual--though the shorts are too short to wear in most public settings. I haven't gotten to take these out into the backcountry yet, but I have already noticed a few major flaws. First the velcro on the back pockets is causing the material around the velcro to pill up. Second, the stiching is starting to fall apart around edges. Like I said, these have not gone through any serious wear either, just casual wear around town and then light wash. I might see about that "lifetime" warranty.
I'm 5'11, 170 and I normally wear a 34" waist in pants. I got the large/regular and they fit perfect everywhere, but they're a little too long. I think the large/short would have worked better.
great pants. I have been wearing cotton zip offs for years and i did not think the nylon ones would be as tough but these are. I wish i would have invested in them years ago. I have already worn them to the Amazon and the Andes(12500+') and to church.
The Paramount pants are very durable and work great in most conditions, even in mild winter. They are somewhat larger than other trekking pants, so mind the sizing when you order. Otherwise, they fit perfectly over hiking and mountaineering boots, and also work well with gaiters. Highly recommended.
Bought these for my boyfriend. I read that if you have athletic legs to go a size up...so, I did so. If you have a thick waist, maybe so....but the size up (XL in our case) was way too big. They did not seem tight around the leg by the zipper for us at all----and he does have "thick", athletic legs. I tried on the womens in a 6, which is what i usually wear...and the womens were tight; however, the mens didn't have the same effect for Jeremy.
You cannot beat these pants, they are worth the money. I have a few pair and wear them 6 days a week for work, school, and playing in the outdoors. I LOVE all the pockets! They seem to be pretty true to size. I like the dune beige the best. People do not even think they are backpacking pants!
This is my second pair of these pants. I love the material. Very abrasion resistant (ie stands up to thorns and other prickey weeds). Also dries quickly. One feature I love is the pocket on the right leg. Perfect size and location for a compass. I accidentally ordered green. If you live in the midwest, I would Highly recommend khaki...easier to spot ticks. Little buggers are hard to see against green pants.
Great pants. Good for hiking and for business casual (good enough for me - leaving for the Peace Corps and these pants cover all the bases). The help I received through customer service was very helpful and very convenient.
Greatest all around pants made. Hiking, backpacking, mtn biking, anything. Thighs are kind of tight, however. I have the paramount shorts and wear a Large. Had to reorder a pair of XL pants to allow extra room in the thigh area. Also, the LONG could be longer (~1-2"). I think the long is 33", would be nice to see a 34" or even 36" for the long, but only a small gripe.
I don't think I will zip the legs off, but it may come in handy while biking. For colder weather, I wear a pair of insulated long underwear underneath. These pants alone aren't very warm, however they do a decent job. The pockets are very useful.
I ordered this for my boyfriend, and he gave me the measurements and color. So easiest gift I bought this holiday. He loves them. The last pair (same brand, almost same style) he wore all the time, did a lot of hiking in them, and after 2 years of alot of use, one of the pockets in the back tore. But they're still quite usable. I imagine this pair will be that tough too. The only note of concern was the smaller pockets. You know how big pockets can be handy when hiking sometimes.
My husband is a 32" 32"; the Medium Regular is a perfect fit. He loves the belt, as many pants "grow" throughout a day of backpacking. The brown color is different from the typical khaki that you always see on the trails. The legs zip off and over a boot easily. I want them for myself!
My father and I picked up a pair of these at a dicks sporting goods after i had been looking around at which pair of convertibles i wanted to get. These were definitely the right choice. These things are super comfortable and really light. They offer great protection to your legs whether it be sun, wind, or bush that you would be worried about. I will definitely be picking up extra pairs of these. A must buy!
I like to travel, backpack, fish, and basically spend time in the elements. I needed great fit, quick dry, medium weight, and lots of pockets, and easy zip-off pant legs for when it gets hot. The pants even have belt loops although they come with an encased belt built in. And a little bit of elastic band in the back for a comfy fit. Did I mention the "crotch" of the pants don't come down to my knees, so you get a better fit. I looked for years to find pants to replace the two pair I have worn absolutely, completely OUT, and this is it. I depend on my gear to perform.
I bought these for hiking in the Adirondacks where it is often wet conditions. These pants are light and comfortable and reasonably warm on chilly nights. Nice pockets. The belt works well also. Attaching the legs is a pain while wearing the pants - you have to take them off to work the zippers easily. My size is 34W x 32L. I bought regular medium per the chart and had to exchange them for regular large. These fit much better.
A little tight in the leg area, but I also have unusually large legs and thighs, so sometimes that would get in the way when I was wrestling the bear from that commercial where the guys kicks the fisherman in the......anyways.....they are very reliable and the zippers stay true, which is rare in convertible these days, I get a new one every season so they must be gooooood!!
I've had two other pairs of these, and had to buy these only because I've decreased my waist size, otherwise, the ones that I've had for over 3 years now, are still in awesome shape! I have taken many 5 day backpack trips, and these are the best, as they serve double duty by being convertible. The zippers have never caused a problem, they dry quickly when you have to wash them out in a stream or lake, (the waistband is the only thing that takes a little longer to dry than the rest of the fabric), and I have not, after 3 years of rugged use in the North Cascades, had a rip, or seam fail. I need to be able to count on my equipment that far into the backcountry, and these have never let me down!
I recently purchased my most recent pair of these pants only because my wife accidentally got some bleach spots on my originals. Although a little steep, these are the only pants in the closet that I would have had to have a direct replacement for. The good news is now I have a pair of awesome work pants, and a new pair to wear every day!
These are great pants, I have used them in warm and cold weather they work well in all conditions, they dry fast if they get wet from rain or snow. I have had them in waist deep snow in the Rockies of British Columbia , to rain in the Caribou Mountains of Idaho, to 8 degree wind and snow in the Laramie Mountains of Wyoming. Next stop for these pant Holy Cross Wilderness Colorado. They fit true to size, they wear well, wash after wash. I have four pair.
I work in a wharehouse environent and some times I am outside. Since it's the summer season these pants are just awesome, no worries with the heat and legs are easily removed when needed. I am thrilled to have purchased these pants.
I am a woman, and could not find any hiking pants I liked in the women's section. These men's fit great! Took them down into the Grand Canyon when we camped- they are so comfortable. Easy to change into the shorts when the weather changes, and back to pants again as the air cooled on the way up. I still wear them around all the time, as I like how they look, and have a great pair of shorts as a bonus.
i own two pairs, and they are rock solid. very durable nylon, not like the thin material you find in columbia brands. i frequently have to bushwhack to the good fishing holes, and these things slide right through prickers and brambles.
i'm not sure if they changed the design or not, i've owned mine for 3 years now. maybe the other reviewer bought them recently and they are different...
These are the best all-around, multi-purpose hiking pants ever. Incredibly durable and lightweight. Perfect for hot, humid climates and serviceable in the cold. If North Face made a casual dress version of these trousers, I'd snap them up in a heartbeat.
I haven't tried these specific pair yet, but I do own a couple pairs of these Paramount convertible pants and they are great in any hiking condition! Thanks Backcountry!
I recently bought a pair of North Face Paramount pants, but I ended up returning them. They are made of very nice material, look great, and the built in belt is useful. However, I found them longer than the expected size, a bit wide in the waist, and very baggy. I'd recommend these for anyone who likes more roomy pants.
I agree that these pants can be a bit flimsy. I use mine mostly for wet-weather hiking and as a shield against mosquitoes. If a rough day is on the way, these stay in the pack until the temps cool. They are quite light and dry really fast, so they do see plenty of use. I opt to not wear them as shorts since the cut is a little, ummm, short. I readily recommend these pants for rainy hikes, cool desert nights, and summertime high alpine skiing adventures. Slot canyons, climbing, or big tech scrambles might beat these to pieces. Have fun!
THESE PANTS SUCK. If you are expecting to get the same North Face Paramount Convertible that you may have purchased a couple of years ago, run away. I have several pairs of North Face Paramount, these aren't those. North Face has made changes to the fabric, cut, fit and styling and none of them good. I travel, fish, hike and fly, the original Paramount Convertible has been my favorite for many years - these just aren't up to the quality of the previous version. If you like mediocrity at a high price then this pant is for you. Anyone that thinks that these are great pants needs to shop around. North Face shot themselves in the foot with this one.
The three pairs of Paramounts I bought are still going strong. The waterproofing needs to be redone, but they still make killer backpacking gear. Side more...
As suggested by others, the north face seems to have changed these pants for the worse! I have about 5 older pairs of these that are the same size more...
