You get really sweaty halfway through the booter-building session. No worries—just pull The North Face Obsidian Triclimate Jacket off and remove the Heatseeker liner. Then put the shell back on so you’ll have some protection when your buddy starts pelting you with snowballs.
HyVent 2L fabric and fully taped seams block wetness
Core vents dump excess heat
Snap-out system means you can wear the complete jacket and still reach interior-shell pockets
A very warm Jacket. Base layer and jacket only in windy -12 C. But it is a bit short. The powder skirt rides up over my waist, collar dosen`t zip fully with neck gaiter, pit zips go directly into jacket (no mesh to keep snow out) and liner is a bit short too. I am 5`11`` 185 and have a large. I don`t want the overly large snowboard style but need a bit of length in sleeves, liner and shell/pow skirt (BC does mention "Recommended use - skiing.") Pondering return for XL or another shell. If you fall while riding or don`t ride, get this jacket. Backcountry is where to buy though.
I hate being cold!!!!! I live in Northern Illinois and I guess that it could be worse, but it is rainy, snowy, and cold nine months out of the year and I bought this jacket to fight it off. It arrived crazy quick and I immediately tried it on, within minutes, at room temperature I was starting to sweat. It performs nearly the same outside in the cold weather. Although it has not reached lower then 30F yet I have been satisfied so far and if later in the year I am not, you will hear about it here. Tons of pockets and a removable hood. The inner liner also comes out and is comfortable on cooler days. So buy this jacket and stay warm, I am.
This coat was awesome during our recent Alaskan cruise. We had two balconies, one in the front of the ship and one on the side. It was pretty windy and cold on the front balcony but this coat kept me toasty warm. I was also warm when walking on the glaciers and while on the crab fishing boat. It was nice to take out the liner when I just wanted something light to wear when we were walking around the ship or visiting a town. I'm moving to Germany in August and won't even look for a new coat because I know this one will do me well in Germany too. I highly recommend this coat!

The only reason this jacket didnt get five stars is because the torso is very long compared to the length of the sleves which gives you the very stereotypical jerk, baggy clothed park skier. Other than that this jacket is full of little perks that you really notice. My personal favorite is the goggle cleaner in the left arm sleve pocket. Ive skied this on vacation in Squaw Valley as well as all over in Alaska. It has proven to be plenty waterproof and warm with the removable liner. Oh and another huuuuge advantage is the liner. It makes a great jacket all in its self although it seems a little fragile, it has held up through camp, hikes and many washing cycles.
Bought this jacket for this season and love it. I used it from Park City, to Hunter Mountain in NY. Great jacket all around. The versatility with all the available pockets inside the outer layer are amazing, from the audio pocket for you iPhone and headphones, internal pocket to stash your stocking cap, to the arm pocket for keeping you pass. The button liner adds to the warmth and protection, I use it here in the NE, but mostly skied without in the more mild temps, but its easy out if you want to shed the layer quickly. The outer shell is extremely water resistant/proof, I wore this jacket in Times Square for NYE in the rain and cold and stayed dry and warm for hours outside. Also like to comment on Backcountry.com's customer service which completely rocks! I had originaly ordered a different jacket, and decided to exchange it for this one. They provided a completely seemless return and exchange, I cold not have asked for better service and understanding. Thanks Backcountry!
This jacket will work very well for the avid skier or avid rider. Best of all it has a lot of pockets, so you do not have to wear a backpack, if you want to travel light while inbounds. The heatseeker liner is very functional and works well without the shell.
This is a great, warm, and light multi-function jacket. I have used it for skiing, biking, and hiking. I grab it any time it is cold because it is just very warm. It blocks the wind very well and the insert is very warm. The insert can be worn by itself. The underarm zippers are a great feature as well as the snow guard. I still have to figure out all the pockets on this jackets. Seems like I find a new one every time I wear it. The color is bright and you will stand out, but it makes it easier for folks to find you on the slopes.
I highly recommend it. You will find you'll wear it all the time when the mercury dips.
I bought this Jacket for a trip to Tennessee and to use skiing. I used to for skiing and found the jacket perfect. I could start off with both layers then remove the inner layer and compress it in my backpack when the day got warmer. I didn't have a use for the hood that comes with it while skiing and just kept the hood in one of the many pockets built into the jacket.
I then took the jacket to Tennessee where the highs were only in the low 40s and rainy. The jacket vented nicely and I never had a problem with sweating. The hood that came with it kept my head perfectly dry as the jacket kept the rest of me dry. I would recommend this jacket to any one who normally finds themselves hot in a winter coat because the venting does a great job.
I love this jacket, it's exactly what I was looking for. Great fit, kept me warm in Vail and at Windham during some very cold weather. Removable inner jacket is a fantastic feature too. I totally recommend this jacket.
I've had the jacket for about a month now and overall I'm satisfied with it. The jacket is very warm; the temperature has been between 10 and 30 degrees and I have yet to get cold in it, it's almost too warm when indoors actually.
Two things about the jacket that I don't like are the absence of an inside pocket in the insert and I have trouble getting the zipper started constantly.
I would recommend this jacket to others who are like-minded; for those who prefer a simple yet stylish look in a jacket that keeps you very warm in bad weather.
I got this jacket for my husband - he loves it!! I wanted a jacket that would keep him warm and it does. He has commented it has more than enough pockets. Would recommend it to anyone.
I use this as an everyday jacket and for skiing. I live in Boston and have stayed warm with this jacket all winter. Even while skiing at night, this jacket kept me warm (with a base layer and a sweatshirt on underneath). The jacket is totally windproof to the point that I can put the hood up when my wife starts yelling at me and I can't hear a thing! The goggle cloth in the sleeve is a nice touch, as are all of the small details in the jacket. The ONLY negative thing about this jacket is that you have to zip up the liner and the shell separately. However, unless you are running out of a burning building and are OCD to the point where you have to zip up everything in sight, this isn't a big deal. I am totally used to it now and I don't even give it a second thought (unless my friends and I are having a jacket-zipping contest, which honestly isn't very often). Seriously though, great jacket for everyday wear and excellent jacket for skiing. Love it.
A very warm Jacket. Base layer and jacket only in windy -12 C. But it is a bit short. The powder skirt rides up over my waist, collar dosen`t zip fully more...
