The North Face Men’s Nuptse Down Vest is a classic insulator that has become a fixture everywhere from the coffee shop to the Karakoram. High-lofting 700-fill goose down pumps up the heat when a chill rocks your core, and the compressible design stows in the vest’s interior pocket when you’re on the move.
This vest is toasty warm but I find it a bit bulky. I would wear this vest and the Mountain Hardwear Sub-Zero all the time until I tried the Patagonia Down Sweater. It is so much lighter and less bulk that I hardley wear these anymore.
As for this vest, it will keep your core warm, no doubt about that. Great looks and has been very durable. I would lose a feather once in a while but nothing bad. Compresses down very small to store in your backpack. I found the sizing to be about the same as the TNF jackets.

The product is great. I bought it for wearing around the campsite after a long day of hiking, but I ended up sleeping in my vest too. I don't like the tight feeling of a mummy bag, so I wore my vest to beg and didn't zip up my mummy bag all the way. The vest kept me very warm. I'm glad I bought it.
Regarding the shipping service, I'm very happy. I ordered my vest along with a few other products with a special two day shipping deal. The vest wasn't immediately ready to ship, so BC sent it out a day later with complementary one day shipping. That is excellent service in my opinion.
here it is folks, your basic but oh-so-awesome down vest. whether over a hoodie or under a shell, this thing is warm & stylish every time. 2 front zip pockets with storm flaps (which can get caught on door handles & such, watch out) and 1 inner vertical zip that doubles as a compression pouch (I wouldn't recommend long-term storage, it's pretty packed in there), plus an "emergency" (read: thin, just a layer of fabric with a basic brim, no down) adjustable hood and drawcord hem on the sides. the shoulder fabric is also a bit tougher for pack straps, front zipper is plastic and sides are metal. this is the vest you will be handing down to your kids in 20 years, if you can stand to give it up.
I have several North Face jackets, all in medium, and they fit quite well. I am planning on using the Nuptse Vest over a fleese or softshell. Should I get the same size as usual or go a size larger?
I would get a Large one. Most of my NF jackets are Medium, but since the Nuptse is very bulky, it would be better if you get a Medium. And if you plan to wear a fleece under it, Medium will be your best choice.
The Vest fits pretty much the same as TNF jackets. I'd stick with a medium. If you don't usually wear a fleece or softshell under your jackets, i'd still try medium, as I prefer my vests to be more snug. since they don't have sleeves I don't like letting air in between my body and the vest. I think the medium would work fine.
TNF Nuptse vest is an awesome vest! I love the style, durability, and warmth of the vest. It looks great, fits well, and keeps me warm on the coldest of Chicago winter days. That being said, the Nuptse vest is not a piece of technical equipment. While it can be worn under a hard shell or over a soft shell etc. the vest should be treated with waterproofing if you are using it as a technical piece. If it's not treated, gets wet, and soaks into the down then it's insulating capabilities are drastically limited. It is great for every day use but if I need insulation under my shell I go with something synthetic.
Ordered this vest and was very happy with how comfortable it is. For me, it fits true to size (6'1" 200lbs) and Large fits me comfortably with room for a hoody underneath.
Positives: -Extremely warm, high quality down -Can be worn under a shell (recommended) or over a hoody -Lightweight (due to its thin outter fabric) and packable (great to toss into a backpack)
Negatives: -Wish it was a little less bulky (its a snug fit underneath my Large Arc'Teryx Theta shell). Extremely broad shoulders. -Outer fabric is NOT durable at all (definitely not snag/rip proof).
Buy this vest: -If you're looking for a versatile down vest that's extremely warm and comfortable and are planning to wear this vest mostly under a shell and prefer lightweight over durabilty
Look elsewhere: -If you're looking for a vest that can be worn by itself daily and is extremely durable
While I love the Nuptse vest, I ended up picking a Canada Goose Freestyle vest. While its not packable, its much better as a standalone vest (much more durable outter fabric) or under a shell (much less bulky). Its high quality down which might be even warmer than the Nuptse.
This is not waterproof. Treating it with a waterproofing agent would probably be useless. The material it uses is a 50D ripstop nylon, which isn't woven tight enough to keep vapor or liquid water in or out. Yes down will be useless if it gets wet, but I think that TNF knows that most people wearing this for technical purposes would likely have a waterproof shell over it. It is pretty hard to find a down jacket/vest that it totally waterproof. I imagine that any perspiration would wet out the down anyways and it would soon become useless in technical situations, since waterproof fabrics don't breath as much as the 50D nylon would. It would hold too much moisture in. Unless you wanted them to put all the down into little plastic baggies and then sew them in. You might sound like a chip bag walking around though.
I'm 6'2 185 and the large nuptse vest fits perfect over my long sleeve thermal shirts and even my sweaters and sweatshirts. The shiny one that I purchased looks really good and it's so warm and comfortable too!
6'1" and you wear a medium?! I'm only 5'4", and have to make do with a small, and it's a LITTLE too long. How can you only wear one size bigger than me, yet you're 8 inches taller?!?! Does it stop at your belly button?
If you plan to wear anything heavy and bulky underneath the vest, like a sweater or fleece, I would consider getting a large. I'm 5'7 and 180. I thought I got a size too big when I got the large (which it is a bit long and loose). Unless you are impervious to cold and can wear t-shirts underneath, the large will accomodate other insulation underneath. The medium would've looked better, but I don't think I could wear anything heavier underneath.
i'm 6'1" 178 and wear a medium in NF jackets. depending on where your weight is, you should probably be able to wear a medium in their outerwear. cheers.
I have had my North Face 700 fill vest for so long that I doubt they called it Nuptse back then. (over 15 years) It made it on countless adventures and even went with me for my entire Appalachian Trail thru-hike in '08. Finally this past winter it received a small burn hole from a campfire spark. -15 F caused me to sit closer than normal to the fire. A small piece climbing tape has been working nicely as a repair, but I will certainly be purchasing a new one with the hope that the quality I've enjoyed for so many years will remain in North Face's new product line. Makes a great feather pillow when stuffed into medium sized stuff sack too!.
I bought this vest for my husband and he absolutely loves it! It was exactly what he was looking for. Whether he is indoors or outdoors, it keeps him at a consistent and comfortable body temperature. As he says, it was like it was made for him. It has a slimming effect, not puffy like a marshmellow.
This is my second Nuptse vest , this one is a nice Vest, Very warm and strong! By Far the best out door vest out there! I live in Oregon and spend a lot of time outdoors and i Love the big neck on this vest! How ever.... in this vest the choice of pocket liner is poor. finger nails got caught trying to get my hands into the pockets. also it runs small so i had to send it back to get the larger size. Backcountry is totally cool with their returns, so it worked out well. If you need a long lasting vest that will stand the test of time ... this is the one to get!
I bought this vest for my boyfriend and he loved it!! He doesn't like to wear a coat, so this was perfect for him. He wears it all the time. It keeps him very warm.
I'm 174, 5'9" and average build. Tried on both medium and large; unfortunately, neither fit right. The medium was right in the shoulders, but tight in the arm openings and short in length. With the large, length and arm openings were perfect, but the shoulders were so wide, I looked like an extra in Star Wars or flak jacketed out and ready for Afghanistan. It's also pretty poofy, but if you're 6'1" with slightly above average shoulder width, it won't be Michelin Mannish at all.As for a layer, it's awesome. Incredibly warm. I wish it fit properly, or I would have kept it. Damn! But for me, sizing is weird. TNF's large Redpoint Primaloft and Marmot Zeus vests fit perfectly (even the large Nuptse Jacket was an awesome fit). Then on the other hand, I wear a medium TNF Khumbu Fleece. Go figure.
I love me some North Face vests! Super warm vest for around the fire after a day on the slopes or even just to throw over a flannel on a cool spring or autumn day.
IT FEELS HOT!! Yeah I know it is still Summer Time (August), but I am getting myself together for the coming winter. First off I want to thank Backcountry for their speedy delivery service, It only took two days to get my purchase to my front door!! Being the slightly vain person that I am I just had to get in front of a mirror and try my vest on. (didn't want to wait for ol' man winter) So as I am trying to look at myself from every possible angle I notice my chest, gut and back were just gettin' this incredibly warm wet feeling...... I was Sweatin' Bullets!! This Vest is so Damn Hot!! It was probably around 70 degrees outside and I had only had the vest on for nomore than 2 minutes. I Love my Nuptse Down Vest it looks and feels great. I just can't wait to hit the Snowy hills of Big Bear with my best girl this winter. If you are looking to keep your core toasty warm then The North Face Nuptse vest is for you!
This vest is toasty warm but I find it a bit bulky. I would wear this vest and the Mountain Hardwear Sub-Zero all the time until I tried the Patagonia more...
