This is THE Classic North Face Down Jacket, and has a certain understated utilitarian style that I love. I feel like this jacket is the perfect weight for your average winter conditions, and the construction is bomb squad. There is a reason that this jacket has been on the market for so long, it's because it's so well thought out and I would go so far as to say, one of best down jackets ever made and...undeniably, the jacket that to this day, every one copies. I really like the blue and black combo.
North Face does make nice gear...but far from the jacket "everyone copies" Marmot has been making down jackets since the 70's. they pretty much invented it. The bubble type design in down jackets is really the only way they can keep the down in place or it would all settle at the bottom of the jacket. Every company has theyre own "design" on how to stitch the compartments. I would think almost all companies copied Marmot to get where we're at today...

This is a very warm jacket and is great on a sub-zero windy day. One thing that I would complain about is not having a down filled hood. It does have a hood but it is just a thin sheet of material and does not do much. Wearing a hat with this is fine but this is a jacket to be worn on really cold days and I did not think about buying a down jacket with a hood.
I have had this jacket about a year and have been pleased with it. It does what it is supposed to do, keep me warm. There are other down jackets out there that are warmer, lighter but this one does the job that I ask it to. The main competition for this jacket would be the Mountain Hardwear Sub-Zero and they are both fine coats. I also own the MH and think it might be a little warmer.
DWR finish works fine for light snow or drizzle. 700 fill rate and packs down small. Hood is about worthless IMO.
JUST BOUGHT A NEW NORTH FACE NUPTSE JACKET! For Average/Cold Winter Days this parka really keeps u warm! Strong Points are the following: 1) Has 700 down fill and high loft. 2) Has lots of down fill in ounces - a good guess is about 12 oz. 3) Extraordinarily light and comfortable. 4) Good workmanship. 5) Better quality than Lands End Parkas, better quality than the equivalent Mt. Hardwear Jacket. I tried them on side by side. This jacket is not for Mountain Climbing. But is is a very warm jacket for 20 degree weather and above. Hey Gearheads - Buy it without hesitation!
Hi - I am 5 ft 9.5 and weigh 165 lbs. and felt just about comfortable when I just bought the North Face Nuptse - in Size LARGE. In my view, and my height and weight are very close to yours, I would go no smaller than a size LARGE IN the North Face Nutpse. Large will Not be too big, and will give you the option of layering, if you choose, on a very cold day. I hope this helps you.
I have had this jacket for a few years now and is my go-to jacket for cold, dry conditions. Other than the fact that it is a little poofy for a 700 fill jacket and that it can be a pain in the ass trying to stuff it into its "stuff" pocket, I do not have any complaints or disappointments for purchasing this jacket. I wouldnt recommend buying this jacket to layer under a shell unless you wanna look like a marshmallow. Other than that. Get it! You wont be disappointed.
I bought this jacket for my son's christmas present. he very joyful and respect to parents that feels love of family. through this jacket my family became the one.!!
The down is 700 fill, which is below the quality of other jackets made by Montbell, Rab (which uses European down standards), Western Mountaineering and Feathered Friends. This makes the jacket heavier for the insulation value it provides. In addition, the construction is sewn-through. In wind, there are definite cold spots on the seams.
That said, the jacket is warm and sufficiently large enough to layer a puffy midlayer underneath. I have used it (with layers underneath) in conditions to -20F with windchills much lower.
The DWR on the shell is average and wears out after a while. When the DWR is gone, the shell wets out and gets the down wet. This compromises the insulation value.
The hood is just a nylon hood that rolls into the collar. For winter conditions, I want an insulated hood to keep my head and neck warm.
For the cost, the Nupste's hard to beat. This jacket regularly goes on sale, so don't pay full price for it.
John, you can catch this jacket on sale right now but you may have to settle for a color other than black. You need to check this site often because the price is constantly changing.
I have read all the reviews for this jacket and I am almost ready to pull the trigger and order one. The only thing holding me back on this is that one of the reviewers mentioned that this jacket goes on sale from time to time.( It looks like a great jacket for the money)but hey- a buck is a buck and since I retired I am getting stingy.
This zips into the Varius Guide jacket. I personally love zip-in compatibility because it makes it easier to put on/take off, and I don't worry about the two layers bunching up or rubbing weirdly. Just my experience.
I never zip my inner layers into my outer shells, but wear them zipped up independently over one another. Kind of how my underwear is independent of my jeans, I don't connect the two. This way if I have a mid layer I like and a shell I like, I don't have to worry about them being "compatable" and just buy my shells based on the expectation of using them over my mid-layer fleeces or down vests or jackets.
I personally have never been a fan of parkas that have zippers for connecting inner and outer layers. It only makes something that once was easy more complicated. It is much easier to shed or add layers when they are not connected.
Just by looking at the zipper, standard YKK, I would say you could zip this into any TNF jacket that has the zip in capability(it says whether it has it in the tech specs). Zipping it in may not be very good though because of the thickness. It may be too bulky if zipped in. I would just put it on under a shell instead of zipping it in.
Thanks Back country for your existence because I am so happy with your services and I love my new nuptse down jacket I can't wait to be in the cold season to wear my jacket. my wife has one of the nuptse down jacket she likes it so much . to be honest I never been satisfied shopping on line till I discover you back country. thank you a lot.
first, love the jacket. I gave it 4 stars because there are a few weak spots. The hood is worthless. probably better to just get rid of it or add a better one that is removable. I know it is not meant to be a parka but it is warm enough that I would never own a parka and this even with my gear addiction. There are more cold spots in this jacket than with the others I have used like montbell. I think it is the baffles or how the seams are sewn through. Overall though for a very warm jacket that looks good, fits good and compresses very nice this is tough to beat for the price.
i forgot--it is very warm.i was out in 12 degrees with just a t shirt under, and i was toasty.so much so,that i now purchased some thermal longjohns to keep my legs just as toasty!!! 4 1/2 stars.
I live in the high country of Colorado. We aren't Alaska, but we do get some extreme weather.
This jacket is an awesome jacket. Warm for hours even in the winter nights of Vail and can even be worn inside for a brief time without causing one to sweat up a storm.
It seems to shut out the cold when it needs to and then breathe when you need to. Kind of amazing.
The only drawback is this coat was not designed for extended exposure to heavy, wet snows nor rain of a Rocky Mountain spring. But, was warm even when wet and it dried quickly without any damage to the shape of the coat.
well its more than warm enuff and is plenty durable what ever i done in it,from walking dog to ice climbing.i have only just purchased another one due to the age of my other one which is still plenty wearable and durable despite being 7 yrs old at least, and has now become a dog walking jacket for the uk's crappy weather, anyways the jacket is lovely and warm and i have never been soaked in sweat or rain with this awesome jacket, unlike some rab jackets i have owned, and which make you sweat alot i found.......well hope you enjoy it as much as i do will always purchase these for the united kingdom and anywhere else in the world.............
The North Face Nuptse Down Jacket was put to the test this weekend in Vermont and passed with flying colors!!! The temps were around 10-15 degrees at the top of Stratton and my husband stayed warm! It was the perfect choice!
I've had this jacket for about ten years. I think it's great for wearing around town, walking the dog, or sitting around outside; I've never considered it to be a technical peice. It needs a shell for nasty weather, but it's insanely hot in a shell when doing anything mildly aerobic. Maybe trekking in the Karakorams in the winter. It is too bulky for anything needed dexterity but also too hot, so it's kind if a non issue. For active outdoor activities, I want more layers and a micro puff if needed. Maybe sport climbing in winter in a big group with only one rope aka chilling. I don't have a problem stuffing it and throw it in my pack if I think there's a chance I might get stuck in the mountains over night. Hood is a complete joke and further proof that it's more outdoor inspired than a real outdoor jacket. Great for city slicking. Crap for backcountry.
I live in Michigan where temps are regularly around 20F in the winter and this jacket keeps me warm. I went with this over Mountain Hardwear's Sub Zero because it seems to be an inch or so longer and feels more comfortable and less like a life preserver. I use to be a hater on all the puffy down jacket wearers out there but finally gave in and I'm glad I did. Being a skinny dude, the winter usually kicks my ass....not this year.
Great Jacket ! Five stars for sure. Lightweight, great fit and great style. Oh did I forget Warmmm ! I did not need the huge pocket inside the jacket however 5 min. on the sewing mach and I have a pocket that works better for my phone and glasses. The Jacket went on sale one week after I recieved it and the great folks at Backcountry adjusted the price. No hassle just excellent service. I look forward to doing business with them again and I would recommend them to anyone looking for quality gear.

Excellent down jacket for an affordable price. Kept me warm in the Tetons of Wyoming in August when the snow was dumping and the temps were in the teens. It is a bit difficult to stuff in the stow pocket, but I prefer to pack it around my other gear for some extra padding in my pack. Also makes a nice pillow.
This is my first down jacket. I finally decided even if it looks like I'm wearing a life jacket all day, at least I'll be warm. I must say that it truly is the warmest jacket I've ever owned. The temps in the winter here in Michigan are usually in the teens and so far this jacket as kept me warm. My only complaint is that it's a bit short and tends to want to hike up above the waste-line.I'm 5'10" 145lbs. and the Medium fits well (minus the short jacket factor).
I bought this North Face down jacket this spring and used it some already for sitting outdoors in 35-50 degree temp's. I have hiked just a little with it this spring and it was a little warm for that. I like the good quality construction, comfortable feeling when I slip it on. I spend quite abit of time outdoors in Northern New Mexico. I also do camping in the fall and spring in Mountainous areas. It is just right to keep me warm sitting or taking care of camp chores. I wanted light weight and this fits the bill. I would have liked a waterproof exterior, this is only DNR, it will shed water and snow just enough to get back to camp and put on a rain jacket over the top of it.
I rate this between a 4-5 with what I have experienced so far. I may change that when I use it more next fall and winter. I can recommend this jacket to people.
This is a great jacket. Keeps you warm even in 9 degree weather! This is the first time I used Backcountry. I chatted with an associate on their website and it was informative, instantaneous, and easy as pie! I will definitely be back to buy more gear from Backcountry!
Great winter jacket, classic North Face attire that's popular for a reason. Also worth mentioning is Backcountry's customer support and service which is FANTASTIC. I returned the jacket after an extensive period of time and did not wear it that much because it was too big for me. I recently was able to return the jacket and obtain the correct fitting jacket for me. Highly recommended. I will likely buy more products from this site again.
I got the chance to wear this one 15 degree night after I bought it. There was no wind so I cannot speak to whether it blocks wind and to what degree, but I started to sweat while wearing the jacket. It's surprisingly thick and amazingly light. Since I purchased this on sale at the end of the season, I'm looking forward to using it more than once next winter.
True to size, looks good, very water repellent. Lite weight too; this is a nice jacket. It is a bomber style and only gores to the hip so my guess on Nuptse you might need more.
i love this jacket except the sleeves are a little short. However, i do have long arms. i was thinking about getting a large but then the jacket is too big everywhere else. The temp dropped down into the teens here in atlanta a few weeks ago and the Nuptse kept me warm and toasty. its a little bulky but thats what one should expect when buying a down jacket. It is wind proof, from what i could tell, up to maybe 20-30 mph gusts, and i have had no experience with the jacket in the rain. also, kind of a pain to roll this up into its stow pocket, but hey, maybe i was doing it wrong.
I have another North Face jacket that isn't warm enough, so I bought this one and its great. I have always wanted a bubble type jacket, this one fits great and keeps me really, really warm. Highly recommended.
Got this for my husband to wear to NY this winter. It was really warm, exceptionally comfortable &, as a bonus, was able to be compacted enough for easy packing. Great quality, timeless styling.
This is by far the warmest jacket I have bought in a long time, maybe ever!!!! I have a cattle operation and I spent a lot of time out side in the weather, usually bad weather. I don't think I have ever gotten cold while wearing it. The Red jacket I bought faded fast and very badly, It still keeps me warm but is horrible to look at. I have a black one this time, hopefully it will keep it's color better. Cowgirl
I bought it for my son who hates to wear a coat in the winter. He loves this coat. He says its warm, not heavy or bulky and very comfortable. Best part is he's wearing it without my prompting!
bought this jacket for my husband and it's perfect. we live on long island so it definitely gets cold here - real feel temps of 2 degrees already - ugh! anyway, keeps him toasty and he looks awesome in it. he's 5'11" and weighs about 185 - bought him size XL and it's perfect. could have gotten away with large maybe but this is seriously perfect. bought the asphalt grey which is very dark but does add a little contrast to the black shoulders. enjoy fellas....
This is THE Classic North Face Down Jacket, and has a certain understated utilitarian style that I love. I feel like this jacket is the perfect weight more...
THE NUPTSE IS STYLISH, BUT HAS COLD SPOTS! The North Face Nuptse has been around for many years and has a loyal following. With 700 down fill and more...
