We seek comfort in the familiar, and The North Face Men's Novelty Denali Fleece Jacket is anything but unfamiliar. This iconic fleece jacket withstood the test of time and is now updated with an exterior media pocket so you are never tuneless, even if sometimes you lack a little class—but hey, it's not your fault that your girlfriend's folks dropped by during guys-night-in. This trusty fleece works well on its own when you're running errands or going to fall football games, but also zips right into compatible shells from The North Face when you need a snuggly warm midlayer for skiing in mid-January.
The Polartec fleece body feels soft against your skin and provides warmth without significant extra weight. Nylon panels enhance the jacket's abrasion resistance in high-wear areas, as well as add a bit stylish contrast. If you're wearing the Denali when you're hiking something less aggressive than its namesake, but still rising at a decent clip, underarm vents unzip and dump excess body heat without you having to take the jacket completely off.
You get three chest pockets: two for storing things like your ID, cash, and lip balm, and one media pocket for your portable, digital music device. The tape-playing headphone set from the 1980's won't work. Two hand pockets give you space for keys, bottle opener, and a half-eaten bag of chips. Elastic cuffs help keep the sleeves in place when you get excited, and a hem cinch-cord reduces the chances of half-time being belly-time for you.

Not for Me, Jacket Returned

  • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit:Runs large

I love Denali jackets, but not this Novelty Denali. The fleece is puffed up and not like other NF jackets, but the kicker was the huge puffy arms on this jacket. It looks like there was a huge bulge on my biceps (think pirate puffy shirt). Now I have to shell out $7 to use the return label to send it back.

Awesome Jacket, Back Country Great Price

  • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit:True to size

Just received my first North Face, very happy with the color, fit and look. Best of all was the price at Back Country, (whole reason for buying one). When I checked other sites, they had the best price of anyone, one company actually had it on sale for $70.00 more than BC. Also, after I read different reviews regarding BC, I figured worst case if I didn't like it they seem very willing to assist in returning items.

The description claims that the jacket has...

The description claims that the jacket has 3 chest pockets including a media pocket. I only see 2 in the picture. A coworker recently came to work with this jacket and I only noticed two pockets in the chest as well. Am I missing something????

Thanks for the input, folks. So I spoke to my coworker today (for the first time ever) simply so that I could get around to asking about the jacket. It turns out that the media pocket is the one with the vertical zipper. There is a hole inside so you can wire your headset to your phone, ipod, or zune (Those still exist...right?). So it seems that there are, in fact, only two chest pockets with one being the media pocket. There were no inside pockets. Someone should consider changing the description on the website. The TNF site would lead you to believe that there are 3 pockets as well. Weird.

Is this the same material and weight as...

Is this the same material and weight as the TNF Scythe jacket? And how it compare to the regular Denali with Polatec 300 in terms of warmth and against the wind?

Best Answer

The jackets have slightly different fabric, both have the sherpa fleece material while this jacket has Polyester incorporated into the outer.

This jacket is 23.9 ounces compared to 15.5 oz for the Scythe, as well as more insulation than the Scythe.

Compared to the regular Denali, the Denali is 32.8 ounces with slightly more insulation providing more warmth and better protection from the wind.
