Some mornings the wind comes whipping through the buildings like a runaway subway train. It’s a good thing that you have The North Face Women’s Metropolis Parka to hold back the onslaught. With head-to-knees windproof protection and 600-fill down insulation, the Metropolis can keep that nasty wind at bay.
Classic style to keep you looking good while you stay warm
Long parka cut to keep you toasty from the top of your head to the top of your boots
Removable hood adds versatility for changing weather conditions
Snap and zip front closure gives you an extra layer of windproof protection at the zipper
Internal security pocket fends off baddies
Bottom Line: Life in a wind tunnel never felt so good.
This is the coat I wanted. It's expensive, but worth it. It's lightweight, yet keeps me very warm. It's not bulky at the shoulders so I don't look like a football player. I love the longer length.
this is just an awesome coat and i'm a guy. i really like the longer down coats and there are so few for men so have tried a few women's ones. This is by far the best, fits well looks great on - i've had many compliments.

THis coat is warm but it ran big. I'm 5'8 125 lbs and small is my usual size but this was to baggy. Also there really was no shape to it at all. It ultimately went back b/c my husband said i looked ridiculous in it. If you want a warm coat and don't care about style, go for it.
I bought this jacket for my wife and she loves it. She's not really use to a longer coat but is really finding this feature nice as it's getting cold again. The outer shell seems to snag and even tear fairly easily but they also patch up very easily. This jacket is plenty warm and I think is extremely cute! I love it on her for sure:)
I purchased the metropolis after much debate. I think it is so worth the few extra dollars from competative brands. I bought the lands end down coat and found the down escaping and returned it to sears after I only wore it once. I am so glad I got the white, which apears actually winter white and easy to keep clean. I was waiting for a navy color and the helpful staff at backcountry suggested I order the white and if wasn't satisfied I could return if they got a blue in. This coat is so toasty warm, I do not understand the one review saying they got chilled at inaugeration in DC. I walked to church below 0 and stay comfortable. I will continue to buy from backcountry because of their great customer service.
Does North Face Women's Metropolis Parka come in shorter length, something that falls slightly below the hip? I have a Metropolis Parka (mid-length) and love it. I like the fact that it is warm and yet light.
I own the North Face Men's Metro Jacket/Parka and also love the fact that it is light and warm. To the best of my knowledge The North Face Metro Parka for women does NOT come in a shorter length. The fact that it is as long as it is will serve you well. It keeps the buttocks and legs warm in very cold weather - and you will really appreciat that. Hope this helps. Good Luck. Jeff Levin
I've had this jacket for three years and its my go-to-every-day-or-night winter jacket. It kept me warm when I was living in Chicago so it can pretty much withstand anything. I recommend this jacket to anyone who is looking for something that will keep them warm without the bulk of other puffy coats.
I got myself a black one in XS (5'4'' and 115lbs). It's very light and warm, but a bit on the large side. Especially the two sleeves are so large on the upper arm part that it looks like I have big muscles -- not that feminine. Otherwise, all satisfied.
Just wondering whether to get the metropolis or the triple c. Which is the warmer jacket? which has the more feminine cut. Live in Australia but go to Switzerland a lot in the winter.
Metropolis is definitely the choice for the feminine cut look. Im 5'4" and length is perfect ( slightly below the knee) versus Triple C which hits about my ankle.
Hi im looking for a long down parka for my husband for when he's walking from the garage into his office and stuff. But he hates the super puffy coats. So i was wondering would either the womens triple c down jacket, or the womens metropolis down jackets fit him?? And which would fit him best and would they look wierd on him being there womens jackets?
I'm a guy and have a fair few long down coats (too many but i really like them!) - Anyway I have this and the triple-c and they are both fine on guys - the only thing with the metropolis is the pockets are a little high for my liking - Others I have are Marmot Montreux, Columbia Luxey among others - just don't understand why there are not more mens long down coats
I respectfully disagree with the answer below. This jacket, along with the Triple C are popular for guys looking for a long down coat. Mine is the Triple C style. My wife, who got me the jacket says it looks very cool on me! With the metropolis, Im going by what i've read only that yes it is a popular choice for guys as well!
It's the same with every idea that is new, even gloves and wrist watches were considered effeminate at one time for guys (and yes, even soap!) I hardly think a long down trench coat qualifies as girly in the slightest!
Make sure it fits though. I am a tall slim build so the large size fit me perfect. (I usually wear mens medium)
This coat is great! Very warm and light weight. It isn't as "poofy" as some other long down coats, so you don't look like a big marshmallow! The reversible zipper is great for easy walking and sitting, but you can still do either with it zipped all the way down. I am a size 8, 5'5", curvy and 130 pounds. The small fit just fine. It is a tad snug around the hips, but not bad at all and you couldn't tell by looking at me. The medium was way too big at the top and the arms were too long. The only thing I would change is a little more flare in the hips for us curvy women!

This is a great jacket! This is the first long puffy I have owned and its awesome. This jacket keeps me warm even when the temps drop below zero. I am 5'7 and 115ibs and I was right in between the small and x small. I went with the the small which is a bit roomy but lets you wear a couple layers under when its really cold! I also love the navy color!
I bought 2 jackets this year. This one was for my wife. It took more than 2 days to be delivered but it was worthwhile~! My wife loved it! She said its light but very warm and its roomy. Most of all, I was amazed with Backcountry services..
I have another brand down coat that the down comes out on the inside back. There's nothing worse than having down stuck to the back of your sweater when you take your coat off. Has anyone had any problems with this?
I had one North Face Metropolis coat I bought a year ago that would NOT STOP shedding down. Everywhere I looked, there was down poking out. I had to return it, and since it was the last one in stock, I never got a replacement. (It was late in the year and no, this was not Backcountry.) About three years before that, I had bought a North Face Metropolis coat and I did not have any problem with it shedding down - maybe one or two feathers came out during the three years I owned it. Based on my experience, I think it really depends. Hit or miss.
Absolutely adore this jacket. I bought this jacket for a Boston winter and it held up tremendously. It is really warm without the dreaded "marshmallow" look. The sizing is perfect on me, as well. I'm 6' tall and the XL fit perfectly - it is the first jacket I've bought that is knee length and actually makes it to my knees! (follow the size chart, unlike other brands this one is quite accurate).
This is a very nice coat. I am 5ft 6 and usually wear a large in North Face. I got this in an XL. It fits well, a large would have been better. This coat is much longer than I expected it hits just below my knees. I thought about returning it but I am sure I will be glad to have the extra legnth in the winter. Overall this seems like a well made coat and I look forward to wearing it.
Yes! I have washed my daughter's and my own Metropolis many times, with other down items on the delicate cycle. We dry it using the '3-4 tennis balls in the dryer'' method to poof up the down. Results are good every time!
I ordered the Ink Blue color and LOVE LOVE LOVE the color...the fit is great as well. I'm 5'8'' average build 135lbs 38C(LOL sounds like a singles ad) I ordered the Large your using it for winter your going to wear those nice thick sweaters hear in Wisconsin (BRRRRRR) so you have some wiggle room and it's not too poofy at all! It's toasty and again did I mention the blue color is awesome:)
Received several compliments on the coat in the first few days... very comfortable .. not bulky but warm... it may not be warm enough in negative temps without layering but it's just right for me.
I live in Hawaii so I'm not used to cold weather at all. This year for vacation we decided to see the Northern Lights in Fairbanks, Alaska and attend a Championship Football game in Birmingham, Alabama. Needless to say I had to purchase all new winter gear and was really nervous that I would freeze the entire time. The North Face representative recommended this coat and it was an excellent choice. In Fairbanks the temp reached -18 and I was able to stay outside on top of the hill for hours and remained comfortable viewing the lights. In Alabama the temp was 30-40 degrees and it rained the entire game but I was warm, dry, and toasty the whole time. This coat is excellent. I'll be keeping it for future vacations!
I am a coat-aholic and this one leaves them all in the dust!! I ordered the Ink Blue and it is GORGEOUS!! Such a nice change from brown and black. I look forward to wearing ONE coat instead of reaching for several PRETENDERS!!! ONE BIG THING:: if you are around 5'6", 125 lbs, average build and usually take an 8 in a coat--DOWNSIZE!!!! You don't want to miss out on any of the benefits this coat offers--it will not look right if it is too big. I originally ordered the medium and I was swimming in it--don't let the numbers convince you (M 8-10)--go with the S(4-6). ALSO--I had AWESOME customer service from ADAM--very HELPFUL and CHEERY--I was so upset that the coat was too big and he fixed me up with the RIGHT ONE for me!!! All around satisfaction!!! ENJOY!!!!
The down is the feathers. I'm a little confused by your question. But 600 fill down means 1 oz. has a volume of 600 cubic inches, whereas, an 800 fill jacket would fill 800 cubic inches of space for the same weight (1 oz.). Does this help? Checkout the following link for more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fill_power
i bought this over a year ago, in the Ivory color. Its a very warm, comfortable and light coat - and the windproof feature is rock solid. I am now going through my second winter with it. I have been outside in the cold in 30-40mph winds and its still nice and toasty - somehow far more effective than my other "windproof" coats. Also easy to wash. I throw it in delicate wash cycle with woolite or tide (free of perfumes or dyes, so it does not bog down the down feathers). Then i put it in delicate cycle in the dryer, with 2 dryer balls, for about an hour or longer. Comes out clean and fluffy and ready for reuse. I have washed it at least 6 times so far in my stackable washer/dryer and never had a problem - its nice that you dont even need the big machines to clean this.
I was so relieved that i could return it, otherwise it would be a huge waste of money. It's very thin (too thin) and lightweigt. I guess that's what a lot of people like, but...I paid $300 and literally froze. I had to put 2 sweaters under it to be more or less warm. Sometimes the feathers would come out too. And to top it all of - after some time one of the snaps stopped closing. My friend bought the same coat 5 years ago, and you know what - BIG difference. Even when you touch it, it feels much fuller and the front closure is made differently.
All I can say, you will pay for the name and not for the quality!
I bought a blue small; i'm 5,51 feets and 121 lbs. The parka is light so i can't carry it, in cold winter but more in spring or autmn (10 degrés for example like in France). But it's very nice and i'm well dress with it.
My wife is 5'6" and 145 pounds and a medium fits her very well through the upper body but is somewhat "tighter" in the hips. Medium is still the right size for her, but if she layers under the coat it could get snug. I would recommend a large based on the measurements you provided.
This is THE coat for women who always seem to be cold. Lightweight warmth with a streamlined look. Size small for 5'7",115lbs.Fits long arms and broad shoulders.
I bought my girlfriend the Triple C parka this year for christmas. I figured it would be very warm for her to use daily. In NY temps are not that bad. 30-40 average. She loves the look of the Triple c but has complained that its not that warm. I told her she's nuts. Its too small for me to try on my own but does anyone know if this coat would be warmer? I was surprised to hear her say hers was not warm but I guess its possible. I want to get her something that she stays warm in daily. Shes from The west coast and isnt used to the NE winters. For the money I figured TripC was the one but maybe this is better. And I'm looking for a longer style coat such as these. Opinions are appreciated.
I really love this coat! I bought it to use for casual and dress. It keeps me warm, comfy, and stylish. I thought the waist would be more "nipped"- took someone else's advice and ordered the extra small instead of the small. Glad I did! I don't really like wearing it for a dress jacket, will probably buy something else for that, but there's no way I'm giving this one up!
The black and blue colors don't look shiny like the tan and white. Are these colors a matte finish or are they shiny like the North Face website shows they are?
This coat was not what I expected. Initially, I was surprised by how thin and light it felt. I was expecting a thicker, heavier winter coat for the price. I decided to try it out this past weekend up north Wisconsin. Although the temperature only got as low as the upper-30's (nothing compared to Wisconsin's winters) it was warm, and great at keeping the wind out. I have a size Medium (frame: 5'7", 130 lbs) and it's a great fit, especially for those who like to wear layers. This jacket would be more appealing if the sleeves were longer with some type of elastic band, and with an interior-lined fleece. Overall, based on the outstanding reviews and recommendations from others, I'm hoping this coat will not disappoint with subzero temperatures this winter.
I Love this coat!!! I bought one last year after I had my 5th baby, well needless to say I had to buy a new one in a much smaller size!!! I had a medium lost a lot of weight back to my normal size and since I loved the coat so much I ordered an x-small. I think it runs a little big I normally wear a small and had to go with an x-small. Extremely warm!!!
Love this coat love it love it love it!!!! I bought the new blue very pretty!!!!!!!
FIRST PARKA COAT THAT DOESN'T MAKE ME FEEL LIKE 'THE JOLLY GREEN GIANT' MAN ... ARMS LONG ENOUGH ... FITTED AT WAIST. I FIRST ORDERED A LARGE AND RETURNED BECAUSE TOO TIGHT IN THE SHOULDERS. I WEAR A SIZE 14 SHIRT AND SIZE 10 PANTS. I CAN WEAR A SWEATER UNDERNEATH COMFORTABLY. SNAP CLOSER WONDERFUL. IF IT HAD STANDARD INSIDE CHEST POCKETS I WOULD HAVE GIVEN IT 5 STARS.
If you want it snug, and don't have long arms, go with the medium. I have longish arms, and like space for layers, so I went with the large. It's still quite flattering.

Can this jacket be altered/ has anyone had it altered and how did it turn out? The sleeves are too long for me and they dont roll well. Thanks for the help!
Hey Kat. Altering technical outerwear is tricky business. You need to find a truly brave tailor that is willing to tackle a down jacket. If there is a place near you that does custom down work they might be willing to touch it, but your average "Jim's Alterations" in the mall won't go anywhere near it. My advice would be to return the jacket to Backcountry and exchange it for something that fits you better. Mountain Hardwear makes a Downtown Coat that is very similar to this one that you might like, and tends to fit a bit shorter. Hope that helps.
Had a spell of below zero wind chills a few weeks ago, and wore this along with a layer of Under Armour and a wool sweater on my mail route-- TOASTY as could be :) Didn't purchase this for work, but knew it HAD TO BE used for me not to turn into a popscicle!!
I just got this jacket and the sleeves are too long. They seem to be tapered and don't roll up well. Has anyone out there had this coat altered? How did it turn out? thanks for the help!
I have been looking a long time for a good long hooded down coat to keep me warm in the Northwest when I move to Portland this fall. I am typically very cold-natured and it seems I need to wear more layers than the average person. I decided to try this because of the great price. I ordered an XS in Ink Blue which was really pretty and flattering (not bulky like some). But I agree with some people who said they thought it was too thin...I think I need a jacket with more than a 600 down fill (I think this is what it had). The sizing seemed pretty good, but maybe I would need a larger size if I put too many layers underneath (more than a mid-weight fleece or sweater).
I've been wearing The North Face Aconcagua for the last year or two and really love it. BUT, I have to walk further outside than I used to and while it kept my upper body warm, my legs (and rear) were freezing.
Enter the Metropolis. I. Love. This. Coat. It's long enough to keep me warm & toasty during this brutally cold Michigan winter. It fits nice and slim so I don't feel like a giant marshmallow.
Ilove the color, everyone loves the color also. My only problem is trhat it fits a little snug for an extra large. But the coat is oh so warm, and Ido love it.
I'm 5'6 120 lbs. It was a toss up between the Small and Medium. The samll fit great if you don't wear alot of layers. I decided to get the medium because I am alway cold and usually have a thick sweater or even a Mountain hardware monkey jacket on. You might like the small!
This coat is really great! Fit is perfect and as expected, it's super warm, has a hood, appropriate pockets, great color - what a find.
As other reviewers have said, this is one of the only down coats that doesn't make me look huge and puffy. It is fitted, so it works for me in a professional setting as well as running errands, etc. I'm in Boston and you know its cold here, so I'm so happy to be walking around in what I consider to be a socially-appropriate and stylish sleeping bag.
Only one drawback, I sometimes have trouble getting the zipper together to zip up. Could be a product of how far it is from my face :/
A couple of my friends had this jacket and I decided it would be a good winter investment. This jacket is probably one of the best investments I've made. Everything that is covered by the coat stays nice and warm. I also love that it's windproof and waterproof for those nasty winter days. I am about 5'5 105lbs and got the Tan coat in an XS and it fits perfectly. Backcountry.com also has amazing service (I returned the shorter version of this jacket when I decided I wanted the longer one) My only issue with the coat is I wish the hood was a little bigger to stay on better.
I would say if you want to wear layers like a sweater or hoodie or fleece to go with the medium. If you're just wearing it over stuff that's tighter to the body, the small would be good, definitely more of a fitted look. I wear a medium and am 5'4", about 140lbs if that helps.
About halfway through winter I decided I wanted a longer length brown down parka. Since the season was winding down it was a daunting task as pretty much only the ugly stuff was left. I tried a few different brands and hated them all. Then, I found this North Face. On sale to boot! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it! Perfect color, length, cut, fit. Runs very true to size (I'm 5'6"/125/size S). Great coat!
sadly I am 5' 1" and 147 lbs. the size large fits like a glove-- and looks great (although not an eighth of an inch to spare and I can't wear it over layers.) I'm afraid if I get the XL it will be too large in the shoulders and i know the sleeves would have to be shortened (even the sleeves on the large are a little too long, I just folded them under an inch or 2). Any advice as to size? If I lose 10 pounds (hubby's suggested solution) would the XL be way too large or just comfortable?
It sounds to me like the XL with shortened sleeves is the best current solution. I always like to have a little bit of room for layers under winter jackets...
I have the atlantic coat and its very warm but too short for me. So this year, I have been searching for the right coat. I purchased a jacket but a hood is so essential to me. The jacket i purchased is probably more for fall spring and no hood. I then purchased a layer and the layer was not long enough. So then I finally researched and purchased the metropolis and I purchased too big. So then I had to return and get the large and F I N A L L Y...i have my winter coat that fits true to size with some room left. I am a 14 in pants so I thought the xl would be my size...no way!! I had to go with the large and now I am happy and ready for Chicago's weather! I am 5'5, so this comes to my knees or a tad bit lower, which makes my legs warmer.
I am 5'2" and about 140. I have this coat in black in large. The waist is a bit roomy but the chest and shoulders fit. The medium was tight in the chest, shoulders and arms when wearing a regular sweater. Coat also goes past knees about 2 inches. Hope this helps.
There's no guarantee even the sizes listed will be available when you order-I've had this happen. Ordered and waited with no notification that the size I ordered wasn't available until I called.
nope they dont, i know its tempting to ask sometimes but whatever they have in stock is always on the page, its in the best interest of the company, no use in not listing stuff that they could sell :-)
I purchased this coat in small and x-small because of the reviews that the coat run large, I am usually a small. I found the coat to be true to fit, so I will be returning the x-small. The small gives me the room to layer comfortably, but still looks amazing when wearing a single underneath. I love the longer style, keeps me really warm. I would recommend this coat to everyone!
The entire shopping experience was perfect! From getting the best price, free shipping and no taxes to yes! a perfect fit, my shopping experience was seamless. My Metropolis Parka fits like a glove and is really flattering. I am usually a medium(6) but after trying on the same jacket at a competitors store I knew a small would fit as the sizes are bigger than a normal sm, med and lrg. The parka arrived within less than a week. The parka looks great on and I really notice a lot of people checking it out! It's casual and hip and also dressy and classy in a playful way...pumps it is! Very recommended. You will not be disappointed.
I need a size small or xsmall badly- does anyone know where I can get one? I have this coat in black and love it, and would love to have a second one in white
I was looking for "the perfect" parka as I have had many jackets and coats and have had minor dissatisfactions with each. This comes close. It is light, fairly warm (though I haven't tested it in really cold weather) snug and attractive. I am only 5' and it hits me just right...not as overwhelming as other down coats.I can wear it to work or out for an evening without feeling like a blimp, and it's not as cumbersome as other winter wear. I'm pretty satisfied with it (though I now realize I do need other outer-wear for other activities and there is no one-garment fits all)
avoid mud puddles, and when it comes time to wash it(if ever)you can wash it with this NIK0037... put that in the search bar and press enter, the extra waterproofness will avoid liquids from staining it, but this already has dwr stock...so dont use that untill water stops beading off the surface of the coat
The is a great warm jacket but only after a a few wears the white colored down starts showing up through the seams on this black jacket - I won't recommend it.
I have been looking for a Winter white North Face Metropolis parka in size small. Can you contact me if one becomes available? I can't seem to find it anywhere, and am almost ready to purchase the girls size XL!!Would it be similar in size?
The Parka was a gift to my daughter in Chicago. She loves it! Wears it every day. I might add that most of the 25-35 year old population in Chicago wears them! Great Buy. Excellent shipping. Tthank you.
Hey Joan,You would probably have to check TNF's site for that. I would recommend jumping on "live chat" and asking those folks. They can tell you if there are any more on order, and if so they can give you a rough expected date of arrival.Hope that helps.
None unfortunately. The best thing is to jump on "live chat" and work with those folks. They'll be able to look up if they have any on order, and if they do they'll be able to give you a rough estimate of when they're expected.
Cannot believe this coat is $280. Thin and cheap-feeling, this coat wouldn't wouldn't keep me warm during the coldest part of winter in Virginia, much less any further north. I followed reviews and ordered down a size to a small - a mistake as well, too small. I could not close the jacket. My regular size medium would have fit fine, if I could recommend this - which I can't.

Excellent winter coat for the Chicago windy and cold winters. It is true to size. This is my second purchase of the Metropolis Parka, one in black two years ago and now one in brown. I would definitley recommend this to anyone wanting a nice versatile warm coat.
Hey Heidi,You'll get the quickest info by jumping on "live chat" and asking those folks. They'll be able to look up if there are any on order and if there are they can tell you roughly when they're expected.
I love my new Metropolis Parka in the brown. It's a nice rich brown. I usually wear a medium in clothes and coats but I ordered both a medium and a large because I read someone else's review who said the coat runs a little small in the hips. I found this to be true for me and ended up keeping the large. The medium fit and zipped but I felt if I took a big step or got into a car it might rip.
I really like this jacket- only had it for an afternoon, tho. Love the blue color and seems really warm and comfy. Tried one in the store that had a faulty zipper, but this one seems fine. I'm 5'7" and 130lbs and the medium is comfortable, just a little roomy and the sleeves are long enough for my monkey arms. If you have narrow shoulders and have short arms a small might be ok. Just want to say that Backcountry is awesome- got a great deal and it got here in a flash. If you're shopping around, these guys are the best.
a lady in your review asked where she could get a 3x size. i would like to know where you can get a 1x the xl is a little tight through the bust i have never been able to find your things a little larger. where did you send this person to get 3 x????
