Description

Your no-excuses boot.

Will it ever stop snowing? For the umpteenth time this season you drag yourself out of bed, grab the snow shovel, and head outdoors to clear the driveway. At least you invested in The North Face Women's McMurdo II Boot, so while your back and fingers may be complaining, your feet are toasty and warm. The McMurdo's impregnable TPR is shell topped with waterproof nubuck leather to create a barrier against snow, slush, and water, while 400g Heatseeker Eco insulation keeps your feet warm in temperatures down to -40 degrees. Although frankly, if it's that cold we think you should just head back inside, call your boss to declare a snow day, and settle down with a cup of coffee and a magazine.
  • Dri-Lex fleece adds coziness and wicks moisture
  • Compression-molded EVA midsole cushions every step
  • Northotic dual-density footbed features a firmer arch and softer pads under the forefoot and heel
  • WinterGrip outsole is studded with temperature-sensitive IcePick lugs for goat-like traction on icy surfaces
  • Faux fur trim adds a touch of style

Warm feet!

Warm feet!

These were a bit snug when I got them. They definitely needed to be warn in. It took a few months for them to actually feel comfortable. After they molded to my feet, they were great. I may recommend going up a half size. They definitely keep my feet warm and dry. I feel very confident when I'm trudging through the snow on my winter hikes. Great boot!

CANT EVEN STAND ON ICE IN THESE

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small

YES THIS IS A GREAT BOOT FOR LONG WALKS INSNOW AND COLD. KEEPS FEET WARM AND COZY WITH THICK SOCKS. BUT BEWARE...... THEY SUCK ON ANY KIND OF ICE! NO WAY CAN THESE BE WORN ON ICE. VERY DANGEROUS! YOU CANT EVEN BALANCE URSELF IN THEM WHEN YOU ARE ON ICE. AND YES THEY DO NEED TO BE A SIZE BIGGER.

I slipped on an ice covered road, breaking my hand. These boots look great re: the grips! Can anyone tell me how they do on icy streets/roads?

Responded on

Darlene,

If traction on ice is of big concern to you, I'd be looking at using Micro Spikes in addition to a great boot.

I am not able to comment on the traction of this boot as I haven't used it, but any time you can pair a properly fitting / insulating boots with some Micro Spikes, you'll definitely get far superior traction.

Hope this helps!

Thought I loved my boots

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs small

I bought these boots a few months ago to prepare for the winters where I moved to. When I first tried them on I thought they fit perfectly even though I bought a half size larger for toe room
The we got a huge snow storm and had to put on my new boots and shovel a driveway that was a 1/4 mile long and I had to stop three times to take breaks so I could take off these boots and uncramp my toes. My toes were very cramped and numb. I thought I did right by buying larger size as everyone said they run true to size. Now I will not be able to return them as I have worn them, and now have to buy a whole size larger and hope they fit good. Other than that I think these boots are very cozy warm and comfortable and with any luck the size 10 will be perfect!

Responded on

Contact Backcountry to discuss possibly returning/exchanging these, if still necessary.
I bought a whole size up...which was fine for the first season...but they have now packed down considerably and have a bit more 'room' inside.
These may just need a bit more breaking-in...but you can still get ahold of B.C. if they're just not working out for you.

Love these boots,....still after 2 years.

Great but...

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

These boots were great! There was tons of cushioning on the inside of the boot (my feet felt like they were surrounded by pillows!), lots of ankle support, a great chocolate brown, I loved these boots. But they were just too much. I planned on wearing these boots to walk around the city in snowy New England winters but these boots seemed more appropriate to hike snowy mountain tops. I tried them on and they took some time to get used to not lugging my feet around. Loved them but not for what I need.

Responded on

They are designed to be for more extreme situations, indeed. Remember, they will eventually 'pack-down' inside. But they're not for the everyday, casual urban stroll. Give them/yourself time to adjust...they're really great winter storm boots!

Hello, I have flat foot, which is unfortunately pretty inconvenient. Could I ask if these boots support flat feet please? Thank you very much!

Best Answer Responded on

These do have excellent 'arch' support, as you can see in the pic below; they are very comfy; the foot-bed form fitting. Beyond that, I recommend you might want to consider going to either a podiatrist, or a orthopedic shoe store to see about custom insole options that may help fit your particular foot needs.

Keep in mind, these aren't meant for hiking, just great general winter use. A half-size up I found out would be optimal...they may initially may feel snug, but will pack down & form-fit in a short time.

Hope this Helps!

Hard to believe the lightness of these rough-n-ready winter boots.

Size up; but the plush interior does pack down somewhat; nothing that decent wool socks can't help with, just in case.

Snug as a bug in a rug...

You'll still want to wear some great N.F. (or whatever brand) wool socks to complete your winter comfort, for added warmth, and wicking.

Also, for a all-around winter boot (non-hiking specific), they have great arch support, too.

North Face McMurdo II Boot - Women's

Well, I put these boots to the test. They kept my feet dry and warm. I hiked, snowshoe, shoveled, and walked in several inches of show in temperatures of sub-zero to mid 20's I would recommend these boots. But if you are one who does not move around in the winter and are looking for a boot to keep your feet warm.. put a foot warmer in your boot. You can buy instant foot warmers. They are like the instant hand warmers, but designed for boots. Most boots are designed with activity in mind, not for standing around. Your feet will get cold in any boot if this is the case. These boots do run very small. I wear a 6 boot with room for additional sock. Not so with theses boots. I had to go to a size 7 and can not put another sock with them. The boots are also light weight which is something a 4'11' , 94 pounder adult looks for. Over all I would still recommend these boots knowing these facts.

LOVE, LOve, love these boots!

I purchased these boots months ago, but waited until after a recent trip to Colorado to write this review. These boots easily withstood 5 days of hiking in the Rocky Mountains in 2-3 feet of snow. My feet stayed warm & dry without getting too hot, and the boots handled the rugged terrain well while providing great support. I would strongly recommend these boots to anyone, whether you're hiking in the mountains, or just for normal everyday use. They also run true to size. Awesome boots!!

I would marry these boots if I could

  • Gender: Female

I bought these boots as I prepared for an upcoming move to mid-Norway. I have worn them every single day since I have arrived*. I love them! They are comfortable, have good grip, are warm and keep my feet dry. My shoe size varies between an 8.5 and 9.5 depending on what type of shoe it is, and for these boots, I needed the 9.5. I have narrow feet/ankle so the boots are a bit roomy in the ankles, thus not the best for hiking around, but just fine for walking around town (and for my 30 minute walk to work). Seriously - love them!

* I actually have worn them everyday but one - on that day I wore a pair of trail runners and I had freezing feet and an overall body chill all day. I'll never do that again!

Tough, do-able, and cool...for ladies!

  • Gender: Female
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small

Best boots I've ever had. Great support, grip, warmth...and they even look great! The only thing is that they do run small: I too, usually wear a 7 1/2, so I ordered a 8 (for heavier socks), but they were still too snug. Ended up with a 8 1/2, and they are fine. They are a bit stiff, but not bad, plus they'll break-in somewhat...you want support, anyway. They are light, and easy to walk in. And just a F.Y.I., T.N.F. warrenties shoes/boots for 1 yr. only; all other products they make are lifetime. Had a N.F. hoodie for a number of years, lost a toggle button, they fixed it...no questions asked, even though it had been years since I had bought it! Also, I have a pair of T.N.F. hiking boots for 3 years now and they are performing like new! Great products!

*****************UP-DATE*************

Suggest ordering only 1/2 size up, instead of a whole size, as these did pack down a little more than expected; wear good wool socks...still love them for all-round winter tromping!

Responded on

Backcountry indicates that there is a manufacturer's lifetime warranty on these boots... not just 1 year as you state in your review.

Responded on

I have inquired at the actual N.F. store in my area that if in the event that these boots (or any shoe) should fail, would it be covered, and they told me that shoe/boots are not covered lifetime, only one year. I looked on the N.F. site and didn't see a lifetime warrenty on these either. Don't think we will need it anyway. But if anyone can get repairs past the one year of ownership that would be great!

Great- warm boots!

I LOVE these boots! My husband and I took a trip recently to Colorado and the weather was seriously cold- sometimes below 0. These boots kept my feet super warm and I got several compliments on them. I was really surprised how comfortable they were- no break in time necessary.

A friend borrowed these from my wife to go to Canada this January and she loved them.

Do these boots run true to size? i am a 7.5...should I get an 8 to
accommodate thick socks? thanks

Responded on

Denise, I would size up to the 8 and if they are a little large you can put insoles in them or simply wear thicker socks.

Responded on

If you're still considering getting these now (on sale!) definately go up one size, you can wear wool socks for extra warmth and this way, you will have room for them...also, they also are a bit short: my toes were to the end of the boot in my normal 7 1/2, and I don't have long toes or wide feet. The 8 1/2 fits fine. North Face also has very nice wool hiking socks in different warmth levels. Most N.F. garmets run a size smaller then others. Hope this may still help for future N.F. purchase.

Purchased this twice. Good value

Very practical boot. I had the same version in another color that was two and a half yrs old, and still goin strong through 2 winters. Somehow, I misplaced them so I had to get another pair. These are a sturdy shoe, that's perfect to walk in and beneficial for the body for anyone with back or knee issues. Its a great walking shoe and trully weatherproof. This boot makes not having to worry about your feet aching during errands, possible moms!

Would these be good boots for snow shoeing?...

Would these be good boots for snow shoeing? I'm looking for something with a little bit of stye and lots of function & warmth.

Responded on

Amy, I see no reason why these would not work for snowshoeing.

Responded on

Amy - My wife has these boots and used them on a snowshoe trip in Mount Rainier National Park. She said they worked great and her feet stayed dry and warm. The only thing to consider is that these are not super high. If the snow is really deep you may want to use gaiters or snow pants that have a tab at the bottom to hook to your laces to keep the snow out.
