A very nice coat.
I am 5'4#, 130 pounds, standard proportions. The Small is a flattering fit, with room layering. I find the Weimaraner color very beautiful. It is a subtle medium brown that goes well with both black and warm greys and looks different (but always pretty) in different lights.
My standard winter coat is the North Face Arctic Parka, which has a similar cut. This coat is much more flattering because it doesn't have all that poofy down - I find the Arctic pooches in the middle and makes my arms look beefy. That said, the Arctic will still be my go-to in the middle of winter, but this coat has been comfortable in the 30s and 40s.
This is my first soft shell product it is a little stiffer than I'd imagined, but still comfortable.
Why only 4 stars? As another reviewer notes, the sleeves are ridiculously long, far longer than those on the Artic parka. I almost returned the coat because the length made the sleeves bunch unattractively. However, there is a seam and then a decorative edge on the sleeve, which enabled me to tuck it under neatly. Because there is a (shorter) inner sleeve, the outer sleeve stays tucked when I take the coat on and off.
Warmth without being a Michelin Man

- Familiarity: I've used it several times
I've been looking for a sleek jacket that would have warmth without the bulk and this is almost perfect. I ordered the small in black. The arms are several inches too long as mentioned in another review as is the neck height, but overall, I found it to be a good fit, particularly if you want to layer. It seemed water resistant during recent rains that we had in LA, but it wasn't like I was out in a downpour.
Nice jacket, odd fit for petite frame

I am 5'2" 110lbs and purchased this jacket in size small. The waist sizing was too large, the sleeves were a good 1.5"-2" inches too long. I ended up returning it for the awkward fit. An extra small may have corrected these issues but after reading measurements on The North Face website, extra smalls are only 1/2 inch shorter in the sleeves. It kept me warm and protected against cold wind but, I decided it didn't fit well enough to keep. The pros are North Face staples: excellent quality, well made, very nice design. Thanks Backcountry for the easy returns. Will keep searching...
Is the inner softshell removable?...
Is the inner softshell removable? Thanks!
This jacked doesn't have a removable liner. The outer shell is the soft shell actually. The insulation isn't removable but it is lined with 100 grams of PrimaLoft Eco. The hood is however adjustable and also removable.
A bit disappointing

I ordered this with high expectations but was disappointed. I chose the brown colour and it does indeed look like a Weimaraner dog's coat but not nearly as nice. It's quite blah, and in fact, the entire coat is a bit plain. Very little interesting detail. Also, the belt sat surprisingly high which made it uncomfortable to do up. I'm not especially long of torso but found that the belt sat halfway up to my armpits. The coat flares a bit from the hips down, like an A-line skirt. On the plus side, the arms are lovely and long, which would have been perfect for me, and it felt snuggly and warm. I considered exchanging it for the cream colour but thought it would look too vanilla. I suppose this jacket might be quite nice in black. If only the belt sat a bit lower, and it had some more funky TNF detail. Then I think it would be a real hit.
is the makina jacket actually waterproof?...
is the makina jacket actually waterproof? the northface site says "water resistant." Am wondering if it will stand up and keep me dry in the rain for a couple hours?
I was told by a TNF rep that their new softshells will actually keep you dry in the rain for a few hours. The only place they're likely to let rain in is at the seams. I've not personally tested this, however.
