As part of The North Face’s Summit Series, the Makalu Insulated Jacket withstands the test of the elements on your summit scrambles. Every alpine athlete needs the trifecta that the Makalu offers: insulation, waterproof protection, and breathability.

  • PrimaLoft One effectively insulates when temperatures start to drop
  • Technically advanced HyVent shell locks out moisture while staying breathable so you stay dry without overheating
  • A must-have helmet-compatible hood accommodates the needs of alpine climbers, skiers, boarders, and other helmet-wearing athletes
  • A tricot-lined collar maintains comfort and minimizes chafing or rubbing so you can focus on unimpeded athletic moves
  • Non-abrasive molded cuff tabs and a hideaway hem cinchcord allow you to customize the fit of your jacket and seal out snow or cold

Bottom Line: The essentials for at-altitude sports.

The North Face Makalu is my current my go-to belay jacket for alpine climbing this past year.

A waterproof shell + primaloft insulation + lightweight construction = warmth in any conditions that is not super bulky/heavy to carry

This piece is higher performance than the 'perception' that is mentioned below..it a more minimalist design which is what u want in the mountains..hence no bulky stitched logos and such :)

A pleasant surprise

By:
December 12, 2011

This jacket is quite warm (very warm if you are keeping active), very light, easily compressible and weatherproof.

I am 6 foot, 215 lbs and ordered the XL so that I would be able to layer it over my lighter back-country ski setup. The idea was to use this jacket for lunch breaks, delays, inclement weather etc.

It is perfect as an XL for both the above purpose and also as a standalone jacket.

The 3 front pockets are perfect, the hood is very comfortable, and warm, and the overall design perfect as a backcountry layering warm jacket.

This jacket will find itself handily stuffed in my pack and put into action at on-trail lunch and dinner breaks, extended stops during ski tours and any other time when some extra warmth is needed.

I find it so comfortable and light that it is also becoming my lunch time cold weather - go-out-and-go-for-a-walk jacket.

Pros:
* Light weight (549 grams on my digital scale)
* Warm (actualy too warm when I am active)
* Weatherproof (good in rain and drizzle)
* Not made with down. (keeos warm even if wet)

Cons:
* Could use an extra interior pocket.
* Zippers sometimes a little fiddly

I would not pay full price for it though. I find most of the ones at the same or more price point (lightweight belay jackets) are over-priced. Wait for a sale and then get it. Awesome jacket if you can get it at the right price.

How compressible is this jacket? Does it pack up pretty small, or does the outer material prevent that from happening? Thanks.

It packs to roughly a litre. I'm sure you can squish it quite a lot if you use a compression sack.

I don't own this exact piece, but I do have similar jackets, with a W/B laminate, 30-40D face fabric and 100grams (or more) of Primaloft, and they pack up reasonably small. I'm sure this one as well. After all, it's made for climbers and folks moving quickly in the mountains, giving the ability to whip out of the pack and throw on over everything. I think that Backcountry has a very good satisfaction policy as well. Hope this helps, Ddearth.

North Face Jacket

By:
January 23, 2011

The jacket is a nice jacket but when I ordered it I specifically wanted a very warm ski jacket for my husband and was told this new technology in the jacket is very warm. Again, nice jacket but not warm at all. Only if you're skiing in 40degree weather so I am returning it for only that reason. Fit is good, quality good.

Look up the insulation value, [body] 113g/m2 PrimaLoft One; [sleeve] 100g/m2 PrimaLoft One. This is not meant to be a standalone ski jacket that will keep you warm always whenever. It's intended as an alpine layering jacket, for use with maybe 2 layers underneath, a base and a wool, or as a layer to throw overtop of everything when you stop moving (ie to belay someone, stop for a snack). Knowing the type of jacket and the other North Face items I own, I'd bet confidently that this jacket performs this function perfectly.

Not bad...

I went ahead and ordered this because they didn't have the Plasma Thermal in a medium. The differences in this one are, this doesn't have the waterproof zippers or zipper flap on front one. Both have 40D HyVent but the Plasma has the Alpha type. They both have two-way zippers on front, which both are hard to get started. I prefer standard zipper and the larger teeth ones like on the redpoint vest and jacket. Another big issue for some might be that this one doesn't have any pit-zips or core venting. This jacket DOES NOT have a tricot-lined collar as stated above, unless mine is a defect. The only part that has a lining on it is the small part behind the zipper. The logos on this jacket are not embroidered like others but looks more like a heat transfer type, not sure why that is on this one? Keeps it more waterproof without having to seal the back? So far this has been warm, I was out in blizzard conditions at 18* with around 20mph winds. I was shoveling so that could be a factor with higher energy level. I only had a thin thermal and t-shirt under it though. I will update if I find more issues or have more to add about warmth. The Redpoint Optimus is also similar.

not recomended

By:

to be honest, I had better expectations from this jacket knowing that it was a north face, but just touching the fabric, and seeing that not even the logos were stitched It looked like an imitation, and for that price I decided to return it and get a perception jacket instead.

I'll agree with Ken on this one. I won't wear my gorgeous gore-tex TNF shell anywhere but the mountains, at least out there people know I actually put it to good use. There is a damn good reason that the logo is imprinted not stitched...what do you think that amount of stitching does to waterproofing? as well, stitching like a logo wont fold or bend happily, making the jacket less compressible. its the little things that put gear like this above the rest. there is a reason that proper mountain gear is more expensive...they may look similar but a walmart jacket with the same insulation just wont cut it where TNF and Mountain Hardwear are called for.

It's funny that a guy put you down because you returned the jacket due to an issue you had with the logo, then said in the next sentence that HE won't wear it because of a problem HE has with the logo. (Doesn't want to be associated with your crowd.) Its very sad that this individual bases his gear choices on what people will think of him, rather than based on the quality of the gear.

The logo not being stitched on is why you returned the jacket? I wish you yuppies would stay away from gear that's meant for climbers and mountaineering. I hate even wearing TNF or Arcteryx anymore because I don't want to be associated with your crowd.
