The North Face Makalu Insulated Jacket - Men's
Available Colors / Styles
As part of The North Face’s Summit Series, the Makalu Insulated Jacket withstands the test of the elements on your summit scrambles. Every alpine athlete needs the trifecta that the Makalu offers: insulation, waterproof protection, and breathability.
- PrimaLoft One effectively insulates when temperatures start to drop
- Technically advanced HyVent shell locks out moisture while staying breathable so you stay dry without overheating
- A must-have helmet-compatible hood accommodates the needs of alpine climbers, skiers, boarders, and other helmet-wearing athletes
- A tricot-lined collar maintains comfort and minimizes chafing or rubbing so you can focus on unimpeded athletic moves
- Non-abrasive molded cuff tabs and a hideaway hem cinchcord allow you to customize the fit of your jacket and seal out snow or cold
Bottom Line: The essentials for at-altitude sports.

The North Face Makalu is my current my go-to belay jacket for alpine climbing this past year.
A waterproof shell + primaloft insulation + lightweight construction = warmth in any conditions that is not super bulky/heavy to carry
This piece is higher performance than the 'perception' that is mentioned below..it a more minimalist design which is what u want in the mountains..hence no bulky stitched logos and such :)

Look up the insulation value, [body] 113g/m2 PrimaLoft One; [sleeve] 100g/m2 PrimaLoft One. This is not meant to be a standalone ski jacket that will keep you warm always whenever. It's intended as an alpine layering jacket, for use with maybe 2 layers underneath, a base and a wool, or as a layer to throw overtop of everything when you stop moving (ie to belay someone, stop for a snack). Knowing the type of jacket and the other North Face items I own, I'd bet confidently that this jacket performs this function perfectly.

I'll agree with Ken on this one. I won't wear my gorgeous gore-tex TNF shell anywhere but the mountains, at least out there people know I actually put it to good use. There is a damn good reason that the logo is imprinted not stitched...what do you think that amount of stitching does to waterproofing? as well, stitching like a logo wont fold or bend happily, making the jacket less compressible. its the little things that put gear like this above the rest. there is a reason that proper mountain gear is more expensive...they may look similar but a walmart jacket with the same insulation just wont cut it where TNF and Mountain Hardwear are called for.

It's funny that a guy put you down because you returned the jacket due to an issue you had with the logo, then said in the next sentence that HE won't wear it because of a problem HE has with the logo. (Doesn't want to be associated with your crowd.) Its very sad that this individual bases his gear choices on what people will think of him, rather than based on the quality of the gear.

The logo not being stitched on is why you returned the jacket? I wish you yuppies would stay away from gear that's meant for climbers and mountaineering. I hate even wearing TNF or Arcteryx anymore because I don't want to be associated with your crowd.
