I'm returning these pants. The rise is very very low. They would look cute on someone skinny who doesn't mind their underwear showing when they bend over or their midsection showing when arms are raised. But for me, they just didn't work. Also, because the back is elastic, you need to have a bit of a butt to keep them up.
I bought 3 different brands of convertible pants from backcountry, expecting to send at least one pair back. But they all fit so well, wear so well, and look so good I kept them all! The # are Peak Performance 3X dry, North Face Horizon Valley Hiking and prAna Monarch convertible. I recommend them all!
I am 5'10", 165lbs & pear shaped. I have a (comparatively) skinny upper body & waist (32") but large butt & thighs(43"). I currently train dogs in northern VA. I'm looking for tough, light weigh pants that dry quickly. I ALWAYS struggle to find pants that fit my body type. I am forced to buy pants that are roomy in the thighs but WAY to big around the waist. I've found success with pants that sit at or above my waist that have some type of built in waist cinch. Any suggestions?

My husband and I went to Alaska over the summer and did all sorts of adventure activities. I bought all three colors of these pants before we left and wore them everyday in Alaska. These were very comfortable and durable. They do stretch out a little if they get wet, but a belt will help.
I bought all three colors of these pants for an upcoming trip to Alaska this summer. I went to multiple outdoor stores in my area and had a really hard time finding convertible pants that fit right. I am shorter and larger than most hiking gear is made for, but these pants fit in size and length. I love the elastic waistband because it doesn't allow the pants to gap in the back when sitting. I ordered an XL/short (I usually wear a 12-14 in jeans). I am only 5'2" and these are a perfect length to wear with my hiking boots. They are a little snug in the thighs, but still allow for plenty of movement. I was a little worried after reading the reviews that they would be too big for me, if I had read the reviews first I would have ordered a size down, but then they would have been too small. The green isn't as bright as it looks on the website, but it is a little more like an army green. I love all three pairs and will most likely be wearing these most days in Alaska this summer!
These pants are great! I bought them for a trip to Guatemala and they were super! I bought XS Reg and they were about 2" too long. I am 5"3" and I wore them with my Keene's... so, unless you have REALLY long legs, maybe go with a shorter length. Very comfortable, light and breathable, but not flimsy by any means! I own two pair and am very happy with them.
These pants are awesome, lightweight, packable, great color (I got the new taupe green) but definitely order a size down. I am 5"8, 125lbs and I originally ordered the small-tall but I am swimming in them. The xs fits great! Perfect for backpacking in central america!
These are perfect for hiking, trail running or for running errands!! They are cute and comfortable. If you're able to catch these on sale like I did, get 2 pair! You won't regret it!! True to size.
Hey there - I am looking for some good hiking pants for Peru and the 4 day hike to Machu Pichu....I have one pair of NF that I got on sale at Sports Authority - dont know the "type" that they are but I would like a pair of convertible pants as well...does anyone recommend these? Also, I am about 5'7" and 125 pounds - I have a 6 in the other pants I just bought but normally run a size 4 - any suggestions on size for these? Thanks for all the help - this is all pretty new to me! :o)
These pants are AWESOME, but they run big. I got size medium (I'm 5'6", 140 lbs.) and they fall off me. I made them work (actually wore them to Machu Picchu myself!), but I wish I would have gotten size small...
Sara, I can't help you much with the sizing but would suggest sizing up if in doubt. If they do not fit BC has a great return policy. My wife has a pair of these for hiking and really likes them. It is nice to be able to convert them to shorts when the weather warms.

When I got them I saw the great material and lovely color.... Unfortunately I returned them. I agree with other reviews, maybe these would work on other people.. not for me. I did not like the way I looked on them ... the low waist and snug fit around the hips was just weird. Also, I think they run a bit large, so you may want to size it down.
How wide are the belt loops? I'm looking to buy a good sturdy belt to wear with these (never know when you'll need a make-shift tourniquet on the trail) but don't want to buy one too wide or too narrow to fit into the loops. Thanks!
I own an XS in the North Face Horizon Valley Hiking Pants and the loops are a little more than an inch. However I'm not sure how they change in S,M,L,XL size. I fit a leather belt through no problem.
The good news is that they fit very nicely. I am 5" 11" and 142 pounds. For me, there is enough room in the thighs for comfortable movement on the trail, but I am very lean, and built straight, more like a man than a typical woman. I think they would be a little restrictive for someone with thicker thighs.
Problem: the fabric is very scratchy. I find this odd, as no one else has commented on this. However, I couldn't stand to keep them on for more than a few minutes after I tried them on. So I put them through the wash, hoping to soften them up, and there was some improvement. So I'm washing them again. Hopefully, they will soften up enough before the upcoming weekend, when I take off for my first packing trip of the summer. Unless they soften up, I can't give them more than two stars, as they are that uncomfortable. (I'll update if they improve.)
Sorry to hear that, I have two pairs and need more because I wear them almost everyday. I've never found the fabric to be scratchy, in fact, I find it soft and comfortable.
I agree with wolfgal, I put them on the day that I got them for my trip and ended up wearing them all day because they were so comfortable. I can understand if you are really sensitive to fabrics that they could be a little itchy, but not for me!
These pants are great, they are so comfortable. They are a relaxed fit that allows for lots of movement without ever feeling like they are tugging at you. I ordered a size too large but am returning them and getting a size smaller. They are one of the most comfortable pair of hiking pants I have. They are very lightweight and I love the snap at the cuff. The only thing I would add is a snap to be able to roll up the pant into a capri length like most of my other hiking pants have.
Maybe these would work on other people, but the low waist and snug fit around the hips and thighs made me look very sausagey. Thank you for your nice return policy, Backcountry. :)
The North Face Horizon Valley Convertible Hiking Pants are a perfect selection if your looking for durable, lightweight, and fast drying pants. I've used them in not only winter weather with plenty of snow on the ground but during rain, and early spring. They are fantastic in any weather. I'm about 5.2 105-110lbs. I bought an XS and they fit perfect. the smalls might have been too big in length and width. A belt is an excellent idea I'm considering finding a lightweight one. the Loop holes are approx. an inch+ a cm or so. I fit a nice leather belt though to test no problem. These pants are super super light weight, pack extremely well and dry in no time. A great choice for a long trek/ weekend hike/ day hike. Not to mention their shorts as well With a back mesh pocket to fit the zip off pants. =]
Write your question here...What is the difference between the horizon Valley and the "Horizon". I can't see any difference n the discription and I've tried both on and can't figure the difference...
The only difference is the ones on sale are discontinued colors/older models. Here is the link: http://www.backcountry.com/the-north-face-horizon-convertible-pant-womens
Just bought these for a hiking trip in Alaska. Unfortunately they're way too long and pretty big in the waist also. I could probably get over the waist being too big if they weren't so also. I'm probably going to return them and try and get them in a smaller and shorter length. Im 5'2 and normally wear a 2Petite in most women's pants. I got a small/reg. Initially I picked a small/short but they ran out before I purchased them. I think the sm/sh would have probably been too big too. I'll go with an XS/Short. But the pants are really nice. The material is light, and it's a quick dry material that works well with my hiking boots, and waterproof shell. The length of the shorts are great because I like my shorts a little bit long, and these hit right at the knee. These pants also have lots of pockets and the back pocket is supposedly to pack and stow the pants, although, I found this to be a little bit difficult. The pants didn't exactly pack away easily--but I'm sure it can be done with some practice.
The material is great, the cut is just slightly narrower than average. The first time I put these pants on though I bent down to tie my shoe and the snap tore out of the pant on one side. Very frustrating.
Is this a lighter material than say, the Paramount Valley pant? Looking for a convertible, lightweight pant for wandering in some serious heat- not as much emphasis on ruggedness in this circumstance. Maybe a different brand or fabric is a better choice?
Hi Capito yes this is much lighter material than what is used on the paramount valley pant. This is The North Face's best hot weather pant for sure. Hope that helps.
Based on other reviews that these pants run big I got a Small (I normally wear Medium). Well the small was too tight, so i returned them. I can either conclude that every other person who reviewed these was wrong, or that their sizing is unpredictable. I went with the latter, as a result am loath to order a medium for fear that it will be too big.
I have the North Face Horizon Convertable pants in a Large Tall and the zipper falls right at the knee. They are perfect pants besides that. I was wondering if the shorts inseam is a bit shorter on these pants (in the tall size) or the same as the horizon convertable. I also was wondering how these compared to the fit of the horizon convertable. Thanks!
Haven't worn them out hiking yet, but these are my favorite hiking pants so far. I really like the way they look, I am pretty picky with my clothes, but I will wear this one on my long travels. I'm short - 5'1 - so it's really hard for me to find pants that fit ok. This one is slightly long, but I added strings to the bottom of the pants to I can tighten the bottom when I'm on a real hike. The color is quite different from what it looks like on the photos here - it's a lot more khaki and not as bright. Even better than the photos. I can't wait to travel in them!
These pants are made with great material, have a good amount of pockets and are comfortable. I had the ability to layer under the pants for extra warmth as well. Wore in Ecuador on a mtn. bike trip and on way to climb mountains in truck rides, around town, etc.
I'm 5'3 about 120 pounds. I thought the small petite pants would fit well; however they fit more like a regular medium. Too big in waist by 2-4 inches and 2-3 inches too long. A petite extra small may have fit better. They served their purpose for the trip, but will certaily get a smaller size before next trip. Too bad I spent $50+ on this size.
This isn't a hip-hugger by any means, but if you are looking for a true waist pant, one that sits at the belly button. Look into Columbia or some of Patagonia's pants. They still rock the "true waist"
I bought these convertible pants to do the Inca Trail in Peru during december. They are great and very comfortable. If they get wet they dry quickly. Excellent purchase.
Loved this pants so much that right after I returned from my trip, I bought another one!!! It is very light, easy to pack. Although it is relatively thin pants, I was warm enough during the hike in the snow. The only thing was.. the waist was too big on me. (I am about 5'4"-5'5", 115lb and I purchased XS) Although it has belt loops, from the side loop to the back loop is spaced little far so I just wore it without belt, with my shirts tucked in. Problem solved.
The cut is just not right. The waist fit well, but the legs were too tight for hiking or anything more than standing around. I was surprised because usually if something doesn't fit me, it's that the waist is too tight. The length was good. So i am bummed to return them.
I usually have a hard time finding hiking pants that fit right as I am 5'9" and about 132 lbs. I ordered the Small/Tall and they fit perfect! They are cute and comfortable. They have a slim fit yet are roomy enough to move around in.
I am tall and thin, so it was great you had my size AND length, which is really hard to find. Also hard to find are convertible pant bottoms that can be unbuttoned (or unzipped or unsnapped, etc) so you can slip them off without removing your boots. I was also very happy with the low-rise fit around the waist. Only one complaint: the pants were a little tight around the quad muscles which slightly limited my maneuverability. I'm not incredibly muscular, but these pants wouldn't fit a chick with bulky thigh muscles.
I'm returning these pants. The rise is very very low. They would look cute on someone skinny who doesn't mind their underwear showing when they more...
I bought 3 different brands of convertible pants from backcountry, expecting to send at least one pair back. But they all fit so well, wear so well, and more...
