Slip into the lightweight, comfy The North Face Women’s Horizon Utility Pant and set out for a daylong (or weeklong) hiking trip. You won’t need much else—abrasion-resistant fabric withstands wear and tear, and light synthetic fabric won’t stay soggy when it gets wet. Built-in UPF 30 sun protection spares your hide from high-altitude rays, and when it warms up in the afternoon, roll up the cuffs and secure with the button tabs for some extra ventilation. An extra zip pocket gives you a safe spot to store the car key—because if you’ve ever let your key slip out of a pocket at the top of a ridge and didn’t figure it out till you got back to the car … well … you’ll never want to do that again.
I got these because I'm 6'0" and wear a 36" inseam and they were the only hiking pants I could find that were long enough. I am 160 lbs with 40" hips and I got these in a size 10R (there weren't long sizes in the store). If I had gotten a long they would've fit perfectly.
There is no stretch at all to these so if you need flexibility for what you're doing, going up a size. There have been a lot of times where I'm going up an incline and the fabric feels too restricting on the tops of my legs and butt even though they're very loose at no incline. They don't have the best breathability when you're sweating but they're alright. I like the drawstrings, outside pockets, and rolled cuffs.
I got a 10 L and I'm normally around an 8 (40" hips, 5'9", 150 lb), I'm glad that I went up in size, I think I could've fit into an 8, but the tie on the pants makes it roomy enough to climb a steep hill, but they won't fall off, or even show off butt-crack. They are plenty long, I can picture them fraying at the bottoms eventually, but as a girl who is constantly looking for long enough inseam, I'm happy with them. Woohoo!

I just bought my second pair of these. They are great for women with a curvy figure - small waist and larger legs/hips. I always have the problem with pants either just fitting my waist or my hips and legs, but these fit both! True to size with room for movement. I got the same size as I do in jeans and they fit comfortably. They also dry really fast and were a good length. I am around 5'5'' and the size 6 was the perfect length.
I love these pants. So much I've ordered and received another pair. Some reviews stated that the fabric was really thin and the sizes ran a little on the small side. Personally, I don't find them to be to thin at all. I live in Texas and prefer the pants to not be too heavy, because of our heat and humidity. They seem to be tough enough to handle most activities. Briars might be a problem because of the nylon, but when you want a pant you can wash out and hang, you have to sacrifice something. I bought these pants for an upcoming Europe trip, because they wash and drip dry wrinkle free, but find I wear them everywhere! They are very flattering and comfy. I ordered the next size up, because of the reviews, and they were pretty loose, but then decided that with most activities I might welcome the extra room. Also love the extra pockets without them taking on the bulky cargo look. The double buttons keep the pant legs extra secure when they are rolled up.
I travel, hike, etc. extensively. I found the perfect pants 2 years ago...horizon utility. I own four pair. This year I ordered another in a new color. Very, very disappointing. They have made the fabric heavier and slightly scratchy; not close to the comfort level of the older model. I am returning the new and will cherish the old.
I found this in a sporting goods store by my house and bought two pairs after trying them on; I'm "blessed" with an hour glass figure so when something is tight on my rear and thighs it often comes along with a good half-inch plus gap at the waist. These pants fit perfectly to where they weren't too tight on my butt (because we all know that hiking pants are THE most unforgiving material when it comes to cellulite!!) but didn't hang too loosely in either the waist or the back. The drawstring in the waistband also helps to cinch down any extra material. Very flattering cut in the back for anyone that has a bit of a bubble butt and they are extremely lightweight, soft, and comfy! Definitely recommend them!!
I have a really hard time finding hiking pants that actually fit me because of my size (5'1 and 113 llbs) and that are actually flattering, but still comfy, also not too expensive. I got the size 2 in short and these are perfect. Never again will I go back to Columbia (way too baggy) or Sierra Designs (a customer service rep told me a size 6 is considered an x-small).
Wow! This will hopefully prove to be the best review i've seen. I'm 5'1 and about 115-120 and CAN NOT find anything that will fit me. To make it worse i live in the USVI and shopping isnt plentiful. I'm ordering these now for my 3 month central america trip (in a 2) and hopefully they'll work. thanks for your review!
Contrary to popular belief, I think these pants fit true to size. I'm 5'4" 135lbs and I ordered a 10 thinking they ran small, but I could have gone with an 8. The 10s are a little loose but comfy. I'm ordering another pair too :).
I got the gray pair. Fabric is light weight and soft, but seems durable (haven't really tested this) and stain resistant. They're very comfortable--fit well in all the places and stretch enough to move in. Wore them all over Ecuador. They didn't hold odor like synthetics sometimes do. I could wash them in the sink at night, wrap them in a towel (to get out the extra water), hang them to dry, and wear them early the next morning--loved this! I'm 5'1", 110, athletic build (boyish, no curves) and the 2 short fit well in the gray. Still a little long (as always), but I "pegged" them when I didn't feel like wearing capris and they were cute that way. Strange thing, though: the blue and the black seemed too big in the 2 short; I'd like to try a 0 in the blue (but BC doesn't carry 0; REI does) because I like that color best--and get another pair. Also, the fabric for the blue wasn't as soft.
I got these pants for the purpose of rock climbing. They have two buttons per pant leg to roll the pants into capris which is what I wanted. I use other pants for hiking as I'm not sure how I feel about having the buttons on the outside of the pant legs. For climbing, however, they work great. I got my normal North Face pant size and they fit very well. Overall, another great pair of pants from The North Face for my mountain adventures!
I love these pants- they are light weight, cute, and very comfortable. They do run short, so I ordered a long and the length is great. (I am 5'8). Also, I'm glad I had read the reviews before I ordered them. They run small. I am normally a size 12, but the 14s are still smaller than I would normally prefer.
I received these pants yesterday. Loved the way they looked, but when I went to try them on they were way to small. Unlike most reviews they state a size too small but on me they actually run about two sizes too small. I am 5'8" but I have very big butt and thighs. I could not get them up on my hips. I wear a 14 in jeans/pants but these 14L did not fit at all. I really believe a lot has to do with the way you are built as to how they will fit.
I have these in 3 colors. I got a size 8, which is standard for me with most pants. I bought them for casual wear though, so they are quite fitted, especially through the thighs and bum. If you want to use them for hiking and being active, you may want to up a size for a roomier fit. They wash nicely, dry quickly and without wrinkles, and I love the roll up feature that allows them to be capri length. Highly recommend!
I'm a fan of TNF pants, but these are unfortunately one of my least favorite. I was so ready to love them, but I too think they run small. I'm 5'7 and wear a 6/8 in pants and I ordered the size 8 and thought they were too tight in the butt and waist for active hiking. I guess it just depends on how you're built. But not only that, the one day I wore these hiking, every time I bent over or jumped, the button would come unbuttoned and I don't think it was because of the tight fit, they weren't THAT tight. Otherwise, they are comfortable pants. Maybe if I get down to a size 4 and wear them, I'd like the way they fit. The fabric is comfy, just wish the fit was comfy for me.
I bought a pair of these at one of my local sporting goods stores. I loved them so much, I bought two more pairs from Backcountry. I found them to be true to size, but on the tighter side. Order one size up if you are unsure. They do stretch a tiny bit after wearing a couple hours. I wear them everywhere - hiking, school, work, errands, etc. They wash up really nice too - let them air dry and they don't really wrinkle.
These pants are really cute but I returned them because I didn't like the material. I have really muscular quads and when I lifted my leg up while hiking they got really tight around that area. Like everyone else says, they run small so size up one. I just like pants with a little bit of stretch in the material.
I think these pants fit true to size. I wouldn't necessarily order a size up, but if you usually wear a 6 or 8, I'd go with the 8. I'm 5'4" and 135lbs and the 8s fit perfectly. There's a drawstring in the waist too so you can cinch them up if needed. Super comfortable.
Great fitting pant. Slightly scratchy on the material but durable considering the lighter weight. So many ways to adjust the waist. Fixed snap & zipper closure with drawstring back up. Also provides for those who need a belt with real belt-loops surrounding the entire pant. With that design you could buy large for the cooler months and layer and always be able to cinch up the waist if they get sloppy in warmer weather. These pants do run a size small (like most North Face bottoms) At almost 5'8 @ 140+ I wear the size 10 regulars. The regular length inseam of 32" works okay but if you're a true 5'8" or taller go for the longs. Even with the material not being cotton I'm diligent to always air dry in fear of shrinking.
Already have two pair and just ordered a new pair today (trying the longs). Note: These are not a tight fitting pant but are not loose either. They do not have a gusseted crotch but double seamed for some extra width in the leg. They probably hike like a dream (but who does that?). Okay for climbing as the waist doesn't slip with the harness and there is still enough movement in the legs.
I'm 5'3'' and 120lbs with a pretty athletic build and a bit of a butt and the size 6 short fits perfect! (A 29'' to 30'' inseam fits me perfect). Couldn't have found a better pair of pants.
They are lightweight and dry fast. I've ended up wearing these pants all over town because they are so comfortable. I'm actually online now to buy a second pair before they discontinue!
I haven't done any winter hiking in them yet, but imagine that they are bit too lightweight for cold weather activities.
Perfect for summer. They don't hold moisture, they dry fast, are breathable, durable, adjustable, have plenty of sizes to choose from, and flattering especially to your booty. They've kept my legs protected from mosquitoes, ticks, and thorns. I've taken a few tumbles in these pants and snagged them but they've really held up well: The ripstop nylon is serious business. Once you get the right size, I bet they'll be your favorite pants too.
I have never owned more comfortable and more stylish pants than this. I previously had experience with various brands, but only these fit well, are not too baggy and I do not have to shorten them. Perfect for long or short hikes or just to wear around town.
I haven't owned hiking pants before, but I got these for my trip to Costa Rica when I knew that I would be hiking and often in the rain. These pants were great. I loved that I could roll them up and have them be capris. They also dried quickly even after getting caught in torrential rain in the rain forest. The zip pocket was great for keeping money safe, and the other pockets were handy, too. Great pair of pants!
I'm 5'3", 107lb, 35" booty, i got a size 2 short and was pleased with the fit. They are very well designed--i'm a sucker for gussets. They sit 1" below the BB, and i adore the roll-up feature for biking. They also dry fast and don't stink. However, as one reviewer mentioned, the material is scratchy, and chafes if you sweat. Does the scratchiness improve with washing? Biking and walking in the humid concrete jungles of urban Ohio, i was sweltering in them. They generated a lot of friction on my quads, resulting in razorburn. I couldn't wait to get them off, it was like coming out of a scratchy sauna hell. Only afterwards did i notice that the pants are made of nylon---ugh. Like pantyhose. Should have paid more attention. I've been searching for an alternative to my butt-ugly but comfortable army camos for the field, and this was a fail.
I found a pair of these on sale and took them backpacking through Costa Rica. They're fantastic. Unlike most hiking pants, these are actually flattering and something I wear regularly. They're really comfy and dry quickly, with a fairly low rise (at least on me). The zippered pocket is great for travelling and hiking. They've held up to every hike I've put them through so far. I agree that they fit small, though. I'm usually a 6 and the 8 is a bit tight.
I'm tempted to buy one in each color. Great fit. Great length (for us tall people). Worth every penny. If only they would come out of the dryer all neat and tidy - my wish-list would be complete.
Really? I've tried these on and I've found them to be too short! If I go up in size they are too big in the waist. I asked the fellow in the shop about getting the same pants but longer in length. He told me they make them in Europe but unfortunately they are not sold in Australia. Grr.. Still yet to find long enough hiking pants that still fit nice in the waist!
These pants are so comfy and great. They have an awesome pocket on the inside you can bunch them up into, which is super cool. Very quick dry, which is also great. I hate buying pants because none of them fit just right, and I ordered my usual size and these fit perfect, without being too loose or tight. Love them! Roll up into capris if it gets warm, too. definitely would buy again!
The pants are awesome! I bought these in a size 10, I can fit a size 6 but i wanted to make sure they were loose. Even though they were a little too big, the drawstring holds them up just fine. I bought a second pair in an 8 and I wish I could wear them all the time. Regardless of how hot it gets here, the pants are light enough to always keep me comfortable.
These are lightweight and do a great job of wicking. I've worn them hiking several times in spring and fall weather, and they're perfectly suited for that. However, like most North Face pants, they are super tight in the seat and waist. I wear a 6-8 in most women's pants, but an 8 in these is tight on me, and also a little short.
I got this pants for hiking but, find I want to wear them all the time. They are extremely comfortable and look great when running errands or hiking. The fabric is nice and light weight which makes it great for summer. I have also found the long this these pants to actually be somewhat long. Which is good when you are tall.
