Men's Style

  • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit:Runs large
  • Height: 5'5"
    Weight: 145 lbs
    Size Purchased: 8

The Zip off version of these pants fit like men's hiking pants. I bought the size 8, which was slightly large for around the waist, but the zipper was tight around my thighs, and then the remainder of the legs were equal width to the thighs. Having played rugby and softball growing up, I have large thighs, and then the rest of my legs are quite tiny. These pants are definitely not flattering. However, the material is great, and gets the job done.

Great product

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:Runs large
  • Height: 5'6"
    Weight: 130 lbs
Size Purchased: 8 returned for 6

I bought these pants to wear hiking in the Alps in early October. I'm usually a jeans and tshirt hiker but I finally admitted to myself that jeans are counterproductive when hiking - they get heavy as you sweat, cling to your legs and restrict movement. Got these originally in an 8, which I usually wear, and they were huge (felt more like 10 or 12). 6 were still loose but I kept them and found they worked well for hiking - nice freedom of movement, kept cool but not too light for 50's temps in the mountains. Fabric did not absorb sweat. One day it drizzled with no effect on the pants - maybe the fabric is water resistant, I don't know. I brought with me light leggings in case the weather got very cold. I never needed them but if I had, the leggings would have fit as a layer under the pants without too much restriction of movement. Good pocket placement. I'm not sure what the draw cord is for but it doesn't get in the way and I like the splash of color. Fabric is not polyesterish like many hiking pants I've seen and very packable for light travel. Overall I don't think hiking pants ever look very "cool," but these for color and general fit are the nicest I found.

heavy and awkward style

  • Familiarity:I returned this product before using it
  • Height: 5'9"
    Weight: 150 lbs
    Size Purchased: 8

Size 8 fit around the waist but the zippered area was awkwardly tight and from the knees down ballooned out to parachute pants. Also, It was also not very light weight. I have an athletic build, but don't have biker thighs so I was a little dissapointed with the fit around the thigh and totally confused by the parachuting pants.

No complaints

I bought the North Face Horizon Pant for my sister. Fits true to size and comfy to hike in.

    My Wife likes the product

She will be using the two pairs she bought for hiking. They do run a bit large in size so you may want to go one size down. She tried them on locally at a scheels store, and then we ordered from Backcountry simply because we ordered two pairs and saved a few dollars. I order most of my supplies and hiking gear from backcountry because the service is always excellent, I can get questions answered, and if necessary returns are promptly taken care of if sizing or other issues arise. These pants are perfect for summer hiking. If it is chilly you just need to add a base layer that can be removed later in the day.

      Perfect for me.

      • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
      • Fit:Runs large
      • Height: 5'6"
        Weight: 150 lbs
        Size Purchased: 8 Regular

These fit well, a little loose but perfect for hiking. The only reason I gave them four stars is because they are a bit noisy. The fabric makes a swooshing sound when walking. Not annoying enough to warrant a return but enough to notice. Otherwise great pants for my hikes!

What's going on with the sizing?!

      • Familiarity:I returned this product before using it
      • Fit:Runs large
      • Height: 5'10"
        Weight: 125 lbs
        Size Purchased: 8 Long

I have a pair of The North Face Horizon Tempest hiking pants in a size 8 long. I LOVE them!! However, they don't make them anymore, so I figured the Horizon II is their replacement. I ordered the 8 long and they're at least 2 sizes TOO BIG! Why?!? So disappointing. And, since Backcountry charges to return items, I don't want to try again in another size.
