Size Chart is off...
- Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
- Fit: Runs large
The idea of these pants were great. I got these for its stow pocket and all the pockets and roll up legs. I consulted the size chart for NF and purchased the size 0. I normally do this for every brand and it has always worked out for me. Unfortunately, the NF sizing is way off from their stated charts and the pants ended up way too big for me (waist 24in, hips 35in). I had to tighten the ties so much it ended up looking like a paper bag scrunched around a bottle neck. To add to that image, I got the pants in brown... And by then there was so much loose fabric around my hips and butt that it just looked weird and felt like my pants were falling off...
I normally wear a size 0 or XS in other brands (Marmot, prAna, Stoic) and those fit perfectly.
On the good side, it is a nice color, true to the picture. It felt like a decent lightweight pant that can probably withstand some good hikes. The packability is also a plus if you like to travel or just to throw an extra pair of pants into your pack for emergencies.
Sadly these just did not work out for me. It will be my first backcountry return.
love these pants!
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
- Fit: True to size
I wear these to work almost everyday and they are light and comfortable---easy to move in! great for workin in a warehouse! true to size. awesome pants to hike in or just walkin the dogs.

Lightweight Hiking Pant
- Gender: Female
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Sizing may be a little different across colors...I ordered these in Weimaraner Brown online, then meanwhile had the opportunity to try them on in a store in Dune Beige--and decided they were too short (0 Short was borderline "flood" pant, 0 Regular was significantly longer and baggier throughout, think MC Hammer pants). I was convinced I would return the Brown once it arrived in the mail, but it fit better than the beige in-store in the same size.
Anyway, I now have them in a 0 Short in Weimaraner Brown: a shade of brown with a hint of olive green, if that's possible. I don't so much care about the roll-up function, as I don't find capris flattering on me. They are a relaxed cut good for physical activity and the fabric is lightweight.
There's an internal "stow pocket" with velcro closure which measures 5" wide by 7.5" deep inside the left leg. You can fold the pants into the pocket, but I imagine you can use the pocket while wearing too. Rear patch pockets have button closure.
Inseam measures just shy of 30", Waist measures about 14.5" across and front rise is 7.25".
Great lightweight pair of pants
- Familiarity: I gave it as a gift, but have feedback to share
- Fit: True to size
I got these for my lady and so far everything seems great!
We normally have a harder time finding pants for her (she is 5'11) but the long inseam on these Horizon pants seem to be long enough.
The look cute, and feel pretty comfortable.
We will be putting them to the test a little later during our trip to Joshua Tree to see how the fabric does against the sharp granite there.

I absolutely love these hiking pants! I wore them hiking every day for six days straight in Yellowstone this past July (I washed them once after day 3) and they performed beautifully. They literally never smelled or showed dirt at all, and seem to resist stains. They are surprisingly durable for such lightweight fabric, I have sat on the ground, rocks, etc. with no problem at all. I think they are cute and stylish considering what they are and have even wore them for casual Fridays at work. Rolling them up as capris is easy and convenient. They are very fast drying, which comes in handy when wearing them as long pants through the dew in chilly mornings, and then rolling them up later when it is warmer and dry. I would maybe agree with others who said that these run small, but I went to a retail store that carried them to try them on first, then ordered them from Backcountry.com at a better price! I love that they come in long (something I was struggling to find when shopping for hiking pants), I am 5'10 and the 6 long fits me perfectly. I love these pants and thought about buying another pair in a different color (I have gray and I think they look great), but what's the point when I can wear this same pair for days and they continue to look like new!
Great pants, when the sizing is right!
I love these pants. I spent 2 weeks in them at geology field camp in Nevada. They're very comfortable and lightweight, and personally I think they are cute compared to a lot of "outdoorsy" pants from other brands. Like others have said, though, the sizing is really small. I usually wear between a 0 and 2 and have a pair from last year's model in 2R, and they are snug when I bend and a bit high-water, so I ordered my new pair in a 4L. They ended up shrinking a bit in the dryer to a good length and are comfortably roomy for hiking and scrambling around.
I ordered a tan pair first and loved them. The size and quality was exactly what I was looking for - so I ordered a second pair in grey. The grey pair is shorter and much tigher. The sizing inconsistency is disappointing.
North Face stuff is annoying small
Nice fabric and construction, but the sizes are all so strange. And I have tried a variety of their styles. I am sick of playing the guessing game of sizes with this sadistic company.
Nice quality, not flattering, runs small
These are nice pants. Make sure you order them big. I ordered them one size up and I couldn't come close to buttoning them. I wear a size 12 short in jeans and the pants I ended up with are a 16 short. I like the fabric, the pockets, and the option to convert them to capris. They also dry super fast. I wish they were more flattering. The 16 is short length, but the crotch is too long and it really doesn't do anything for your butt. I would love to find hiking pants in petite, not short. Overall, compared to the prices and quality of other pants, I would recommend these if you are not interested in looking cute on the trail. Be sure to order up because return shipping is not free!
I usually wear 8 regular pants (I am 5'8 and just under 150 lbs) but I know TNF pants are little short and narrow for me so I ordered these in 10L . The pants hit just above my ankles and were still very tight at the hips..Not very happy about paying for return shipment either. This was my first and probably last order on Backcountry.com.
I love these pants for travel and I have several colors. They wash out well, look and feel nice and they come in a longer length for us tall people.
