Wonderful, great, the very best.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I love these pants. I'm about 5'1" and usually wear a 10/12 Short in pants. I have these in the 12 short and they fit great. They are the perfect length (which is saying something). They wash easy and dry quick. I used them on a very dusty trip around Ghana and Burkina Faso, and they were they were so easy to clean and packed light. I would recommend these for all seasons (as I have used them to hike in the Great Smoky Mountains as well!), and think they are one of the best pairs of hiking pants I've bought to date. Definitely buy these if you're looking for something versatile, cute, and easy to clean on backpacking trips.

The Absolute BEST Travel Pants

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

Size reference: (Female) 5' 4.75", 110 pounds, 25 in. waist, 34 in. hips. I have these pants in a 0 petite.

FIT & USE: I'm a big fan of having one piece of clothing that does a LOT of work. I took these to France for a month-long trip, & they were one of only two pairs of pants I brought with me. I wore them on the plane, train, & bus; slept in them when I was shelterless for a night in Marseille; camped, hiked, & climbed in them... "Put it through the wringer" is about right. The fit is miraculous on me; neither too tight nor too loose--they didn't hug my legs or butt; they had just enough extra room for movement. The North Face's zero petite size generally fits me quite well. The length on these was perfect for traveling--no dragging--a pet peeve of mine when traveling through dirty or muddy conditions. I lost about 5 pounds while traveling, so the drawcord was definitely useful--I didn't even take a belt because of that thoughtful option, even though the pants do have belt loops.

PROS: These pants move/stretch amazingly well. I love the color (and the UPF 30) for hiking in hot, sunny conditions. I also wore these every time I did ecology research in fields in super sunny 95º weather surrounded by ticks--the light color came in handy for catching them crawling up my legs. Even if you sweat a lot (I'm a moderate sweater) they won't smell funky after a few uses; they're amazingly breathable and super lightweight. One of my favorite features about these pants are the pockets. They all worked great, and I specifically loved the depth of the front pockets & the single zippered pocket--excellent for storing important train tickets and money when you're traveling in a crowded train station. I'm not a huge fan of rolling my pants up, but the roll-up feature (w/ buttons) absolutely came in handy on warm hikes and for climbing, as pictured.

CONS: The occasional stain does stand out. But, I made the color choice, so I can't blame TNF for that, & they do not stain easily.

Too large

I normally wear a size 6 relaxed in Royal Robbins pants, but these pants from North Face were huge in that size. I am not even sure if the size 2 would have fit me. They are overly generous with their relaxed fit. If they had fit, I probably would have liked them since the material and color are nice.
