Slip on The North Face's Horizon Tempest Pant, before you head into the wilds on a hike. This lightweight hiking pant got a major redesign this year to give it a modern look so you are ready whether you're sipping a micro brew or making the final push to the summit.

  • Lightweight, packable ripstop nylon is certified BlueSign so you know it has been manufactured with the earth in mind
  • Quick drying performance, sun protection, and secure pockets make the Tempest the ideal pant to reach all your horizons
  • Legs roll up and secure to turn the Tempest into a modern-day capri pant
  • When you're not wearing the Tempest, it packs up small in its very own stowpocket

Bottom Line: The traveling, hiking, bar-hopping pant.

Great pants!

By:

I got these because I wanted a non-zip off version of my older Paramount pants for travel and hiking. Like the Paramount, these have little stretch, but I don't find it very problematic. As for the fit, I would disagree that they run small...maybe half a size versus some women's clothes retailers like GAP or LOFT, but it's not significant. They are a bit tight in the butt/thighs for me (I'm 38.5" and 22" respectively there) but they pass the squat test, and the next size up was a little looser than I prefer. So my recommendation would be to go with your regular in-store vanity size if you like a slimmer fit, and size up if you like a looser fit. I do agree with other reviewers that the pockets are kind of useless, and the back ones are a little weird in shape (not super flattering). Cargo pockets like the Paramount would have been better, but oh well. For reference, I'm 5'4", 130lbs with a short torso, longer legs, and smaller waist, and I got the 4 in case they stretch out during long trips, but 6 fits as well. Length was perfect, but if you're the same height with a long torso, the short length would probably be better! Weimaraner Brown is a great neutral brown and you can't beat Backcountry's price!

Awesome, Sexy Hiking Pants

By:

I LOVE these pants! I bought them for a 7 day backpacking trip in Norway, but I have already used them a lot on small day hikes. I live in Texas and it's getting really hot, but these pants are so lightweight that they're comfortable to wear even in 80+ degree weather! My favorite thing about them is that they don't fit like sweat pants...they're sexy hiking pants, if you can believe it! My boyfriend loves them and so do I because walking around in baggy pants makes me feel lazy. Another great thing about the fabric is that it dries really quickly. I was taking a practice walk around my neighborhood with my pack the other night and accidentally walked through a sprinkler and soaked my pant legs. It was wet to my skin, so I timed it to see how long it would take to dry. I kid you not, it took only 3 minutes! I'm 5'2 and 119 pounds and I ordered the size 2 in regular length pache grey because it was on sale. Even though the short length would have been better, the regular length is okay with my hiking boots on. The pants fit me perfectly everywhere but on my hips (I do have curves). They were only about 1/2 inch too tight, so I just took the button off and sewed it a little closer to the edge of the pants and now they fit great. I preferred these roll-up pants to the zip-off ones because I just know I'd lose one of my pant legs. However, rolling them up really doesn't make that much of a difference in the heat if you're wearing hiking socks because they only roll up to capri length. I was hoping they'd roll up to the knee, but the material is so lightweight that the extra little breeze rolling them up allows has been enough so far. The main complaint I saw from other users is that the fabric has no stretch, which is true...however, it hasn't been a problem for me. The pants could be a little lower in the crotch area, but I can walk, squat, run, etc. with no problems. It's a price I'm willing to pay for the excellent lightweight and water-shedding properties of these pants.

Perfect lightweight hiking pant

By:
August 4, 2011

These pants are the best! Very lightweight but durable. The fit is perfect - the rise isn't too high or too low and the waistband is perfectly comfortable. They are lighter weight than the Paramount pants (both types of paramount pants) and the fit is better too. I hope they continue to make these. And I hope they make a slightly heavier weight (warmer) version also.

I literally don't have a bad thing to say about these pants! They will be going with me on an 11 month 11 country backpacking trip. They couldnt be more perfect for my travels. And I absolutely LOVE that they come in a "long" option. I can't stand it when pants are too short!

How short is the short? I want them to be long enough to wear with tennis shoes and my hiking shoes, which have maybe a 1-1 1/2 inch base. I'm 5' 4" and 120 lbs (no hips or butt, athletic legs). Was thinking of purchasing the 2 short.....suggestions?

Great Hiking Pants

By:
May 18, 2012

These pants are great for hiking and casual use! I purchased in the Pache Grey color because that was the color on sale. I sized up 2 sizes or so at the advice of other reviewers and it worked out well. I usually wear a 4-6 in jeans (depending on the brand) and I purchased an 8. They are a little loose sometimes (mid trip when Ive lost some weight) but I just crank down the drawstring a bit more. Since I sized up, there is plenty of room in the thighs for hiking and climbing around. Good range of movement. Plenty of room to layer underneath for chilly evenings camping. The pants are lightweight but durable. I wore in the desert in Utah for a couple days and was comfortable hiking around. Have also worn hiking in CO in the mountains.

Too tight for a curvy hiker

By:
December 2, 2011

I ordered these and Mountain Hardwear Ramesa in size 14... Ramesa fits perfectly, these I couldn't even button! I guess it's my particular shape, as other's don't seem to have that problem, but for my size 14 curves (I have quite large hips, and, ahem, behind, in contrast to a thinner waist), these didn't work... and I don't think a 16 would cut it either! Going to check out roomier styles.

fit just didn't work for me

By:
March 21, 2012

I really wanted to like these. The 6 fit well in the waist, but was too tight in the thighs. The 8 was way too big in the waist, but the thighs worked. Yes, I have muscular thighs - I am a runner, but not that muscular. For reference, I am 5'9' 133lb and usually wear a 4 or 6 long in jeans. I did find that these were on the long side. The regular length was long enough for me.

Great comfy pants - but don't be fooled by the "Long"

By:
March 5, 2012

These pants are really light weight and comfortable...but they are very very short! To fit properly on my waist/hips, I would have purchased a size 6, but in order to be long enough I had to get a size 10 Long! They just barely stayed on my hips...so super comfy yes, definitely not flattering! Someday, some outdoor company will make hiking pants for tall girls. I'm 5'10" and 140 lbs which isn't even that tall, I have a 34" inseam...well, its 34" to my ankle and I really have issues with pants that don't cover my ankles!

Nice fabric, no stretch.

By:
February 21, 2012

I bought these pants for a week-long trek in Norway and so far they're great. They fit me perfectly everywhere but in the waist. They are so snug on my waist that I couldn't gain an ounce. This wouldn't matter if the fabric stretched at all, but it doesn't. Also, there's not much extra room in the groin area. This isn't a problem for jus wearing around, but I'm afraid that on a hike it would be uncomfortable if I got sweaty or anything. I would order a size up, but I'm pretty sure they would be too baggy that way. I'm not sure what to do. I love the material and love the way they fit the rest of my body (especially my butt!), but I don't want to end up miserable in the middle of my trip. For reference, I am 5'2" and 122 lbs. I ordered the 2 regular in pache grey (beautiful color, too).

Agreed. The fit is a little weird, I ordered two sizes. 4 and 6 (i'm 5'6 120 lbs) I opted to send them back for this same reason, the 4 fit perfect in the body and the waist fit, but too snug to actually use for hiking. The 6 was falling off =/ I had to send both back.

Nice pants

By:
February 22, 2012

I am 5'10 1/2" and weigh 175. I ordered size 12 long and they fit true to size for me. I have a straight muscular build and they seemed right for me. I think the pants would probably not have enough room for someone with a lot of curve. I do wish the fabric had some stretch so they would feel better in certain positions but overall I would say they are comfortable.
The pockets are fine, but only 1 small right side zipper pocket in the front. You could carry a credit card and a little cash, but it would be obvious to others what was in your pocket due to the thin fabric.

I like that the button up pant legs button up on both sides so they stay up evenly when rolled.
The fabric is thin, seems tough, and should be great when it is hot out. Overall I was happy to get these since they are the ONLY hiking pants I could find in my size. I thought there would be more options, but Talls/Longs are tough to come by and they sell out fast.

I got the Weimaraner Brown which is a good color. I also got the Pache grey which was darker than I expected and I am very glad. I'm not a fan of light colored pants so the darker color was a relief.

I love them! They are perfect!

By:
April 27, 2012

I am going to buy my fourth pair as soon as they put the Dune Beige color in a 0/short! I love them so much! I am 5'2 (that height may be a wee bit of an exaggeration but close enough)and weigh 98 lbs. I am leaving for NZ in a few months to study abroad for a year and wanted a pant that could handle me never sitting still and putting them through "pant hell". These have so far not only proven to look great, and fit perfectly, but be as comfortable as scrubs (very comfy!). I am also hoping they make a little bit heavier style but of the exact same pant for the more brisk days. Right now I figure I will just wear Under Armour under them if the need arises. I have worn them just about everywhere, and I have not encountered a problem with binding in the thighs or length ( I have worn them with flip flops and my Merrell hiking shoes. I would understand though that these have a particular fit according to the other reviews. In short, I cannot recommend these enough, and Backcountry.com is so understanding about such things, if you have to send them back then you can. I can assure you they are most definitely worth it!

The main difference between the two pants is fabric. The Noble Stretch Pants are stretch cotton based for comfort, and the Horizon Temptest Pants are quick-dry nylon based for more technical applications. Both are great travel pants, the Horizon option just a little more technical...dries quicker, packs smaller, lighter weight.

Hope this helps!!

Great!

By:
July 23, 2011

I got these pants because I was soon going to be climbing Pikes Peak in Manitou Springs, CO. It's nearly 13 miles from bottom to top. These pants were fantastic! One of the most important things (I think) is that they are comfortable. The size was true to any other pants I would buy, they were lightweight, an were geat with the changing temperatues. At the bottom it was in the 80's, I rolled them up and was never too hot (because of my pants anyway). I actually think I perfer the roll up rather than the zip off. Less hastle and no chance I will lose the bottom of my pants (-: When we got to the top it was in the low 40's...I rolled them down and stayed plenty warm. The wind didn't go right through them, which was great because it was definitely windy up there.

I think I touched on the best, most helpful parts here. They were true to size, they are comfortable, and great in different temps. I've only worm them for this one big hike, so one thing I can't account for is the durability over a long time.

These are super comfortable and light weight. I wear them as everyday pants, hiking pants and I roll them up into capris for climbing. And true to claims, they dry super fast! I'm 5'8 and the regular inseam is the perfect length. They do get kinda wrinkled but it doesnt take long for the wrinkles to fall out after I've had them on for awhile. And another reason I love them is bcuz u can wash them in a sink or the shower w/just a lil bit of detergent and they come out good as new!

They have no spandex. They aren't stretchy and there is very little give to the fabric. They looked deceivingly large when I put them on. But then I went through a full range of movement (splits, lunges, etc) and they really bind-ed. I think the next size up will look like clown pants.

light weight and durable, great off trail pants

By:
February 26, 2012

LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! I have two pairs of these pants and my first pair I have had for 4 yrs now and have used from Texas swamps to the hiking the Rockies to off trail in the southern Appalachians. These pants are great if you have to wear pants while in the field but need them to we light weight and quick dry because of the heat and humidity. I also love that the thighs are relaxed, one of the only pairs of hiking pants that I don't feel the thighs are too tight so I can still climb over logs and up hills. Due to my research I am almost never on trail and need rugged pants that protect me but that I don't over heat in and don't weigh me down and have found that hands down that of all my field pants these are my favorite, plus they last forever!

Exactly What I've Been Looking For

By:
February 15, 2012

My pants just came in the mail today and I couldn't be happier! I've been searching for the past few weeks for a great pair of lightweight hiking pants that roll up, and these are fantastic. I found them in a store and tried them on, but they only carried regular length which was a little bit too long for my taste. I am about to go to Chile for 3 months and I know these will be the perfect pant to wear around town and also on a trip in the mountains.

I bought the "Pache Grey" color and I think it looks a tad darker in person than it does online, but it is still a great color.

For reference, I 5'6, 150 pounds and I normally wear a 10 or a 12 and I had to get a 14 short in these because they are slim fitting in the waist and I want to make sure I can wear them comfortably all day long. This size fits me great.

Backcountry has the greatest prize on these pants out of anywhere else I have found! This is my first time ordering from them and I was nervous at first, but I have been pleasantly surprised.

Great buy!

By:
January 24, 2012

I ordered several variations of these pants because the reviews about the size made me question what I should get. I'm 5'3, 124 pounds with a small waist and fairly generous posterior. I usually buy a size 4 in jeans/shorts/etc., but the reviews made it sound like I would need a 6 in order to wear these comfortable. To cover my ass (hehe), I ordered a 6 Reg, a 4 Reg, and a 4 Short. The 6 was fine, but was definitely roomy. Obviously you want a little bit of room if you're going hiking, but the 4 Short was actually even better. A perfect fit in the waist, the right length, and they survived the squat test. Still roomy enough to hike in comfortably but way cuter. The only reason they don't get 5 stars is my personal preference against drawstrings. I just don't care for them. But that's no big deal. Can't wait to use these in Costa Rica in a couple of weeks!

These pants were great for my 4 day hike. Very lightweight, durable, and comfortable. The drawstring on the pants kept them up and didn't interfere with the hip belt to my hiking pack. I love these pants! I had such a hard time finding proper fitting hiking pants (i'am not shape like a boy). I'am 5'2" & 120lbs, with large hips. I hike about three time a week. I love that these pants are breathable, especially during long hikes. They're also roomy in the seat & thigh, perfect for a curvy girl like me :). The waist is a bit large, but the drawstrings helps. I've read some reviews that the pockets on these pants "stick out" or are "awkwardly positioned." I don't see that. Bottom line, if you're curvy, hike often & want to be comfortable you're going to love the fit of these pants. I own three pairs!!!
