Strange Sizing

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs large

I was initially impressed with the quality of the materials used in making the shirt, which are sturdy yet light weight and breathable. However, I am 6'2" and 200lbs so I decided to go for the XL to accommodate my chest and having read on other reviews that North Face tend to make the sleeves relatively short I was wanting to avoid this. The sleeves are adequate and although I may often have them rolled up there are times when I have to wear them down and they just about reach my wrists. This for me was manageable; however, the length of the body is ridiculous. I by no means have gibbon like arms but the body of the shirt reaches down to just above my mid-thigh. Wearing the shirt tucked in makes it passable yet being in a hot climate I often wear shirts untucked to help allow air to circulate. This simply isn't possible with this shirt as I look as if I have borrowed it from my father rather than having something that fits me. It seems with the North Face sizing that you cannot have sleeve length to match reasonable body length and that you must sacrifice one for the other. It makes me wonder who these sizings are modeled on? For this reason I cannot give the shirt a strong recommendation. If it was not for this factor then I would be giving this product a 4-5 rating. As it stands I will steer clear of North Face in the future.

Better than my (already) high hopes

Summer 2013 heat and humidity in east coast (USA) was record breaking. Spent 2 weeks in DC, Philly, NY, Boston and a few remote areas with average daily temps and humidity exceeding 90 and 80% respectively.

I'm not proud of it but have to admit that I perspire pretty heavily and I never, not once, perspired through these shirts (bought 3) despite hauling a backpack each day.

The multitude of pockets (especially the zippered chest) are awesome and very convenient. Finally, they are as close to wash and wear as I have found. After each wear I would wash in the sink or tub, wring out, roll dry in a towel and hang up to find them fully dry the following morning.

Bottom line, love the shirt and looking to buy 1 more (planning 3 weeks in Europe next) as soon as I can afford it.

P.S. BackCountry is NOT involved with this testimonial. Wife and I have purchased at least 12 items (luggage, shirts, pants, shoes, baselayers) from BackCountry in the last 18 months and they have exceeded our expectations in price, shipping, etc. each time. Keep it up and don't jinx me BackCountry!

Great fit for hiking and camping, also looks good around town or for a weekend BBQ. Material is breathable and comfy.

I loved it so much I bought 2!!!

Great fit and great feel. I am tall and thin and this shirt is a great fit for me at 6'1. I went with a medium and it was a good choice. I typically have trouble with button down shirts because they are to roomy. This is more fitted. The only downfall is that the arms are cut a little on the short side if you have long arms like me. However, I usually turn the cuff up once anyway. Another winner from The North Face!
