Cover lots of ground comfortably when you wear The North Face Horizon Peak Convertible Pant. This pant dries quickly in the misty mountains and, thanks to the gusseted crotch, it easily moves through slick, rocky terrain. Once you descend below 6,000ft into the desert, zip off the pant legs and store them in the stow pocket for a cool walk through the cacti. If you’d rather not burn your fair skin, leave the legs on, because the Horizon Peak won’t let in the sometimes cancerous rays.
Bottom Line: Shorts or pants? Let’s call them shants.
My wife got them for me and they are great for early morning starts to keep you a little warmer. Then in the afternoon the legs easily unzip and come off. They are also great for hiking through dried brush so you don't get all sorts of little scratches on your shins. They have held up wonderfully for the time I have had them, still look new.
Ive used these pants for a couple of seasons now. Ive been to Sierras in the summer, the top of Half Dome in Yosemite in the fall, and the Grand Canyon in early winter. These pants are awesome. Warmish when its cold outside, and cool in the summer. They dry really fast and seem to be extremely durable. Id definitely by these again. Great job on a great pant The North Face!

These pants look and feel good, however that doesnt do much for me when they are in use. I am 6'4", 230lb, and these pants are very constricting. Length was good for size i ordered. These pants/shorts are not cut for an athletic person of my size. Very functional, however just not comfortable when in use, especially when i was sitting down. Will return for a refund or another product.
Just seems that companys dont consider that not every person out there is 5'10" and weighs only 170lbs. Be nice to see a company make some products for us taller outdoor people! Be glad to test them out for ya to.
I like my pants to fit tight enough that they don't catch on every stray buckle and twig when I'm walking, and light enough that I don't feel like I'm carrying more weight on my legs that in my backpack. These don't fit either bill. I usually wear a 30-32" waist, and the 32" in these was a tent on me. The fabric was also heavy and kind of rough feeling, not what I would want to spend a lot of time moving around in.
I agree: these trousers are 'ok'. They are too heavy when the pockets are packed with goods and essentials. The material is a bit on the heavy side. Lovely material, but, too bulky all over. The waist fit for me is not great either - always have to pull 'em up when walking. I'd give them 70% out of 100%.
Well, really hard to order online when one reviewer says a 32 is a tent on him, and another that a 32 was too small! Good info that they appear to have changed their sizing from the previous year, but these were written a month apart. Guess I have to stick to brick 'n mortar stores.
How about this, waist sizes are SUPPOSED to be in inches. But more often than not, brands like Columbia, The North Face will have a 32" actually measure out to 34". Check the brick and mortars, buy it here for a better return policy and customer service.
I bought these this past week for a backpacking trip in the Ventana Wilderness of Big Sur, CA. I paid $42 and wore them the whole weekend. They breath incredibly well and convert into shorts in about 30 seconds. I got them wet when I was filling up on water at a stream and they dried super fast. No complaints. Hard to beat for the price.
wife bought me these for a birthday present after relentless hinting. So I now have my favorite hiking pant! They're lite, soft, comfy and fit great. I, being 6ft and around 147lb,(yes tall and skinny) medium fits great! looking forward to this weekends hike and next weekend paddle trip to put them to the test...I highly recommend them, hey you never know, you might find NY lottery tickets in the pockets...I did, but no winner...!? oh well; great new TNF horizon peak pants...spring paddle, camp and backpack season ahead...feeling pretty good right now
I really wanted these pants to work because they are good looking pants. The fit is funky and does not agree with my body type. The 32" are way too small and I can swim in the 34" so that is the story. Don't know if pairs vary in size but these did not work for me.
I purchased one pair at local outdoor store and after using on the job I decided to purchase more of them. The fit is perfect for my 210 lb. body and great performer in the field. Working undercover these pants offer concealment of weapons and pockets are perfect for storing extra ammunition and restraining gear. They wear great and convert to shorts for faster running and capture modes. Performance rivals 5.11 gear.
These pants are terrific for trail use or every day, except for two factors: 1) The front-mounted cargo pockets add ridiculously to whatever you have in the traditional pockets. You look like some kind of messed up squirrel if your wallet is in there. 2) The zip-off pant leg is rather long, meaning that the shorts are rather short. That might be fine if it's very hot, but I'd prefer a longer short for greater UV coverage, and, I'll admit, style.
I was getting sunburned, both during and after a ride. This purchase worked out great -- light-weight; flexible; easy to carry and change with the zip on/zip off pant legs; simple and always presentable.
I love these pants. They are comfortable, easy to convert, and seem like they will be durable. The ankle zips make them easy to take on/off over low hikers.
I ordered a pair of these this spring to replace some older cargo pants, and these are unbelievable. Extremely lightweight, quick drying, and the most comfortable pants that I own. The perfect travel pants. So far works very well in temperatures over 120F. I'm buying at least 2 and maybe 3 more of these. I'm 5'6" and the short inseam fits perfectly.
After giving up hiking/backpacking 15 yrs ago or so, I missed it enough to jump back in as a senior citizen, but needed to get re-equipped. I've used these pants on very steep, strenuous, bushy trails to paved rail-trails to sandy ocean beach, and overnight backpacking, and I am completely satisfied with them. They fit perfectly, are light weight, dry quickly, and are very functional. It's great to have the zip pocket for vehicle keys and not have to worry about them falling out. The zip off pant legs nicely accommodate changes in temps or bugs.
I tried several convertible pants, the "Horizon Peak" seems to be the best of all I've tried so far. It performs good on long hikes in different climates, is comfortable, easy to handle and clean.
The only weird thing about these pants is the fit. I usually wear a 32 waist size, but when I ordered this one in 32 it was too tight. The next larger size is 34, which was too large for me. I still kept it and use it with a belt.
The previous model of the "Horizon Peak", the "Horizon" (2009 model), had a much better fit. I don't know why The North Face changed it, sometimes you can over-improve things...
My wife got them for me and they are great for early morning starts to keep you a little warmer. Then in the afternoon the legs easily unzip and come more...
