Horizon Convertible Pant - Men's

Pull on The North Face Men's Horizon Convertible Pant, and leave your shorts at home. These convertible pants zip off mid-thigh so you stay comfortable while wandering. Pants have their advantages in the backcountry: They cover you from the sun, keep you warm, and protect your shins while bushwhacking. But on hot days, nothing's better than shorts (except maybe being naked). The North Face used abrasion-resistant, quick-drying nylon in the Horizon Pants so you can scramble on rocks and wade through rivers, and they'll hold up. *These pants run small. We suggest ordering a size larger than your regular size.

Bottom Line: Bring along The North Face Horizon Convertible Pants and leave your shorts behind.

my favorite hiking pants

By:
August 5, 2010

These are dynamite hiking/camping/travel pants for 2 reasons: First, they are super light and thin, you barely notice you have anything on. And if you get hot, zip off the legs to cool down. But mostly, I love them because they dry within a matter of minutes. I used these pants for 8 days in SE Montana/YNP wet wading when I was fly fishing. I wore TNF Hedgefrog sandals and these pants and they were the best wet wading system I've used yet. Once you are out of the water, these pants dry so quick you forget they were wet in the first place. Literally, 10 minutes and they are completely dry. Which is really nice if you are doing laundry in a river or in your bear canister. Ankle zippers make these pants easy on/off when you have shoes on.

I find these run pretty true to size- I wear a 32x30 jeans and these in a size M fit me really well. Highly recommended for backpacking/hiking/travel in the summer or warm weather. For pants with a little more weight, check out the Horizon pants.

Be a little careful when you have stuff in the pockets- they are not very deep and when you sit down things have a tendency to fall out.

Awesome pants

By:
February 11, 2010

I bought these for a 9 day trip in yellowstone and the tetons last June and July. They were exactly what I was looking for which was a light weight, comfortable, convertible pair of pants.

The fit is perfect, I am 6' tall 165 pounds and bought the L/Reg size if that helps any. The zippers for the short conversion are not noticeable while wearing them, in other words they feel like regular pants. There is only one zippered pocket and it's layered behind the front left pocket. I kept my keys in there and other stuff in the main pictures.

These were the only pair of pants I had with me the whole time and they stayed nice and clean (at least no dirt showed) and they dried very quickly when I used them to swim in lakes numerous time.

I wear these ALL the time now.

Ordered two pair and want another. Absolutely order one size up or you will be sending them back as I did. Would like covered hook and loop rear pockets instead of button but that doesn't change my mind about the pants. Backcountry.com is a great retailer.

Strange fit...

By:
March 19, 2010

The length was good and the materials/construction seems to be what one would expect from TNF, but these pants had such an odd fit that I returned them. They fit like I expected from about mid-thigh and down, but from the mid-thigh up to just below the waistband, they were super-tight across the front. Everything felt fine in the back, but they were almost obscene up front.

Great pants

By:
May 16, 2009

I bought these pants for hiking / backpacking. So far they have lived up to everything I have thrown at them. The elastic waistband is very comfortable, but if you need extra support or reassurance, there is a draw string as well. Compared to other convertible pants, you hardly notice the zipper for the zip-offs. I know on some other pants that can be uncomfortable on your knees after a day of hiking. I highly recommend these pants!!

Almost Perfect

By:
April 17, 2010

As I had read from multiple sites the sizing is a bit off, but I wanted to hold faith in The North Face. That faith was well placed for every aspect of the item except for the sizing. The waist fit fine, the legs from the knee down fit fine, however the thighs were snug. They were actually not bad until I put anything into the pockets then they just felt weird. I'm returning these through Backcountries awesome return policy and reordering the 3 pair at a larger size.

By:

I have had these awhile and I love them. They seem
to be very durable and are extremely comfortable.
I use the zip off legs all the time when I get hot on hikes. They are very light and pack well. they dry incredibly fast also. I highly recommend these pants.

I have taken these on a few trips into the north califonia coast, and hiked through some nasty rocky waters and rocky beaches and over many logs and never a rip or tear.(and i always stay off the trail and try my own route, kinda like a little kid in the backyard creek.haha) They dried very quick and are very light. They do run small though I am a large normally and went with the xl. May need long johns when it drops to mid 20s. Great pants!

who ever designed the pocket system on these pants was an idiot there are not two pockets on the side there are four pockets in the front they are layered one over the other making two of the pockets totally useless, restricting motion and making them to tight to be very functional.

Great Versatile Pants

By:
March 26, 2010

Brought two pairs of these on a six day sea kayaking and backpacking trip on Cumberland Island, GA. Performed beautifully on and off the water. Kept me cool when it was warm, and dried quickly when wet. Layered with a good pair of basewear they were comfortable when it got cool at night, as well. Only complaint is that the pocket scheme is a little odd (front left pocket is actually two on top of each other, meaning you can only comfortably use one at once).

Awesome

By:
February 25, 2010

I just got these pants today so I can't testify to their abilities in the elements, but as far as comfort and fit go they're great! I'm about 5'9" 145 lbs with a 31" waist. I bought the Medium regular length; when I took them out of the bag I was a bit worried because they looked far too small, but the elastic in the waist stretches really nicely and doesn't dig in as I feared it might. My only thought is that they could be an inch or so shorter, but that's just me.

I must agree with those before me who said you don't feel the zippers in the legs. I was hesitant to purchase zip-off pants because I've had poor experience with them in the past, but these are in a whole new category - you don't feel the zipper and you don't look like a dork :P The material is very light and feels good as well; I am however worried that they won't hold up well when it comes to thorns and branches, but I suppose that is to be expected from pants in this category.

Overall I am quite pleased, the zippered pockets are a nice feature (though I don't put much in my pockets while hiking anyway) and the one for your cell phone is quite handy as well. The only reason these pants don't get a perfect 5 is because I don't think they'll hold up against heavy abuse. If that's not something you're concerned about buy these pants!

*FYI the green is a lot more green then the picture leads you to believe.

Overall good pants

By:
October 8, 2009

These are good, light-weight convertibles. They run smaller than the sizing chart might lead you to believe. I'm 6'4'' 205lbs with a 33'' waist. I eventually ended up with the XL/ Long, after returning the L/L. They were too short and constrictive through the thighs. The waist is larger than ideal, but these have a draw string and belt loops. I commonly have this problem due to my "athletic" build. Overall these are good pants. Not my favorite, or the best I own, but they do the job.

I really like these pants now that I sent back the large and got xl. The North Face size chart is wrong. If you are a 36 to 38 you need to order xl. I don't think it is fair that I had to pay for return shipping because of this error.

Hello PRW317...

Tho the best of my knowledge, BC has a very good return policy. So good, that once the return is authorized and you get a RA#, you should be able to print the UPS shipping label from the returns tab under your account. I hope this will help with future orders.

get 1 size bigger than you are

By:
March 11, 2009

i am 186 cm tall 82 kg and 33 inches inseam, 38 waist and 44 hip, for this i thought that i need an L size, but chating with a gearfreak he told me to get an xl because he has one and fits small.
The XL fits great everywhere, except that it is a little long on the legs, may a short would be better for me, i got the regular one.
it has a snap closure, and a adjustable drawcord on the waist, also it is stretchable on the hips, and has belt loops- the hand pockets are very comfortable, the left one also has zip closure. the side pockets are too small, only fits 3 fingers, i think it's for keys or coins, or mobile, or a small mediaplayer. the backpockets has button closure. the zips on each leg have different colours, so you don't get confused, and the legs zippers at the bottom are very convenient so you do not have to take your shoes off when it gets hot. They are very lightweight.
i got the soil brown, it is darker than the picture, and for 36 bucks it's a
nice quality product
take my advice get a size bigger than you think

By:
March 27, 2009

But I can't. Lightweight, Dry's in less than 5 minutes on a warm day, Zippered side pockets were great when I discovered them. Best purchase I have made recently, so I went and bought another pair. Probably gonna end up with 4 in the end. I normally wear a 38" waist @ 230lbs 6'2" and XL fits great.

Everyone is right!

By:
October 28, 2008

I wear 33x30 pants and bought these in M Short - perfect length and waist.

They're lightweight, the zip off legs is great, and they dry quickly.

Overall they're comfortable, but everyone mentions that they're "tight in the thighs" - I only noticed that to be a problem when I was taking a big step up onto a rock or something. Didn't bother me too much but I guess it was enough that I'd try a different pant next time. Buy them and try them to see if it's an issue for you.

Also it would be nice if they had a clip belt built in like my wife's REI ones - these just have a drawstring.

By:
August 15, 2008

These pants are well made, but not meant for someone with larger (cyclist) legs. I have a 33" waist and 31" inseam and found these pants way too tight in the legs. The waist fits and length are fine, but I'd recommend sizing up one size if you have well muscled legs.
